Comparative in vitro activity of imipenem against gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic bacteria from clinical isolates.

Imipenem is a member of a new class of beta-lactam antibiotics, carbapenems, with a very broad antibacterial spectrum. In this work we evaluated the in vitro activity of imipenem against a variety of bacterial strains isolated from clinical specimens as well as the activity of other beta-lactam antibiotics. The results obtained with 501 bacterial strains show that imipenem is active on both gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms isolated from different infections. The in vitro inhibitory activity is greater than that of aztreonam, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, piperacillin, amikacin, and ne

Species distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of gram-negative aerobic bacteria in hospitalized cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial infections pose significant threats to hospitalized patients, especially the immunocompromised ones, such as cancer patients. METHODS: This study examined the microbial spectrum of gram-negative bacteria in various infection sites in patients with leukemia and solid tumors. The antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolated bacteria were studied. RESULTS: The most frequently isolated gram-negative bacteria were Klebsiella pneumonia (31.2%) followed by Escherichia coli (22.2%). We report the isolation and identification of a number of less-frequent gram negative bact

Epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of Gram-negative aerobic bacteria causing intra-abdominal infections during 2010-2011.

The study for monitoring antimicrobial resistance trends (SMART) surveillance program monitors the epidemiology and trends in antibiotic resistance of intra-abdominal pathogens to currently used therapies. The current report describes such trends during 2010-2011. A total of 25,746 Gram-negative clinical isolates from intra-abdominal infections were collected and classified as hospital-associated (HA) if the hospital length of stay (LOS) at the time of specimen collection was ≥48 hours, community-associated (CA) if LOS at the time of specimen collection was <48 hours, or unknown (no designatio

Recovery of Gram-Negative Bacteria from Aerobic Blood Culture Bottles Containing Antibiotic Binding Resins after Exposure to β-Lactam and Fluoroquinolone Concentrations.

Blood culture bottles containing antibiotic binding resins are routinely used to minimize artificial sterilization in the presence of antibiotics. However, the resin binding kinetics can differ between antibiotics and concentrations. This study assessed the impact of clinically meaningful peak, midpoint, and trough concentrations of meropenem, imipenem, cefepime, cefazolin, levofloxacin, and piperacillin-tazobactam on the recovery of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae from resin-containing BacT/Alert FA Plus and Bactec Aerobic/F blood culture bottles. Activity of cefamandole and other cephalosporins against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

The activity of cefamandole was comparable to that of cephalothin, cefazolin, and cephaloridine against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Diplococcus pneumoniae. In contrast, cefamandole was considerably more active than cephalothin, cefazolin, or cephaloridine against gram-negative facultative bacilli, including Haemophilus influenzae, the most striking disparities being noted with indole-positive Proteus and Enterobacter. Bacteroides fragilis was more susceptible to cefoxitin than to cefamandole or cefazolin (median minimal inhibitory concentration, approximately 8, 32, and

[Bacteria isolated from surgical infections and their susceptibilities to antimicrobial agents. Special references to bacteria isolated between July 1995 and June 1996].

Isolated bacteria from infections in general surgery during the period from July 1994 to June 1995 were investigated in a multicenter study in Japan, and the following results were obtained. One hundred and sixty-four strains were isolated from primary infections, and 202 strains were isolated from postoperative infections. From primary infections, anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria were predominant, while from post operative infections, aerobic Gram-positive bacteria were predominant. Among aerobic Gram-positive bacteria, the isolation rate of Enterococcus faecalis was the highest, followed by

Tetrachloroethene-dehalogenating bacteria.

Tetrachloroethene is a frequent groundwater contaminant often persisting in the subsurface environments. It is recalcitrant under aerobic conditions because it is in a highly oxidized state and is not readily susceptible to oxidation. Nevertheless, at least 15 organisms from different metabolic groups, viz. halorespirators (9), acetogens (2), methanogens (3) and facultative anaerobes (2), that are able to metabolize tetrachloroethene have been isolated as axenic cultures to-date. Some of these organisms couple dehalo-genation to energy conservation and utilize tetrachloroethene as the only sou

Effect of different combinations of antibiotics on experimental septic peritonitis in rabbits.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of different combinations of antimicrobial agents in the treatment of experimental septic peritonitis. Two hundred rabbits, divided into ten groups of 20 rabbits each, were used. Septic peritonitis was provoked in two stages: treatment of animals by mechanical lavage or antibiotics was performed during the first stage; blood cultures, isolation and identification of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in the peritoneal cavity were performed during the second stage. The parameters assessed were survival and, in the second phase, the formation of per

Effect of aerobic and anaerobic atmosphere on the detection of micro-organisms from blood cultures.

Blood from patients with suspected bacteraemia was simultaneously cultured in two Vacutainer blood culture bottles containing 45 ml of supplemented peptone broth (Becton Dickinson), five ml of blood in each bottle. The cultures were incubated at 37 degrees C for seven days. One of the bottles was vented and the other unvented. A total of 3958 blood culture sets were processed during the 20-month period of the study. Altogether 438 (11%) of the blood culture sets were positive. Of the 438 isolates, 317 (72%) were detected in both bottles, 61 (14%) in the vented bottle and 60 (14%) in the unvent

[Sensitivity of bacteria to chemotherapeutic agents (Zurich 1980). Part II. Bacteria isolated from outpatients].

The frequency with which grampositive and gramnegative bacteria sensitive to antimicrobial agents are isolated from outpatients is reported. The data were obtained by the standardized Bauer/Kirby technique. Most of the strains examined proved to be sensitive to various betalactam antibiotics, to the tetracyclines, chloramphenicol and sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim. Aminocyclitols were the most potent drugs. No decrease in sensitivity to standard agents was observed from 1975 to 1980 in E. coli and S. aureus, the most frequently isolated organisms.

Tachypleus lysate test for endotoxin in patients with Gram negative bacterial infections.

Amoebocyte lysate from the horseshoe crabs (Tachypleus gigas) which abounds in the Gulf of Thailand was used to detect endotoxin in patients with Gram-negative bacteremia, in patients with Gram-positive bacterial infections as well as in the control. The Tachypleus lysate test (TLT) was positive in 94.4% of 36 patients with Gram-negative bacteremia before initiation of antibiotic therapy. Only 4% of 50 healthy individuals were positive and all 7 patients with Gram-positive bacterial infections were negative. The threshold sensitivity of TLT was 0.625 micrograms endotoxin per ml of the plasma.
