Gram staining for the treatment of peritonsillar abscess.

Objective. To examine whether Gram staining can influence the choice of antibiotic for the treatment of peritonsillar abscess. Methods. Between 2005 and 2009, a total of 57 cases of peritonsillar abscess were analyzed with regard to cultured bacteria and Gram staining. Results. Only aerobes were cultured in 16% of cases, and only anaerobes were cultured in 51% of cases. Mixed growth of aerobes and anaerobes was observed in 21% of cases. The cultured bacteria were mainly aerobic Streptococcus, anaerobic Gram-positive cocci, and anaerobic Gram-negative rods. Phagocytosis of bacteria on Gram stai

Oral flora and pathogenic organisms.

Oral microbial flora consist of numerous bacterial taxa, ranging from aerobes through fastidious anaerobes, and fungi, viruses, and protozoa. Many of these bacteria are unique to the oral cavity. The organisms exist in a complex interrelationship that is regulated and maintained by physical and metabolic microbial interactions, and by environmental factors, such as saliva and diet. Many of these organisms are relatively harmless, although others are significant pathogens, producing local and systemic diseases in healthy and compromised individuals.

Effect of carbon starvation on toluene degradation activity by toluene monooxygenase-expressing bacteria.

Subsurface bacteria commonly exist in a starvation state with only periodic exposure to utilizable sources of carbon and energy. In this study, the effect of carbon starvation on aerobic toluene degradation was quantitatively evaluated with a selection of bacteria representing all the known toluene oxygenase enzyme pathways. For all the investigated strains, the rate of toluene biodegradation decreased exponentially with starvation time. First-order deactivation rate constants for TMO-expressing bacteria were approximately an order of magnitude greater than those for other oxygenase-expressing

Cellulitis and bacteremia caused by Bergeyella zoohelcum.

Bergeyella zoohelcum is a rod-shaped, aerobic, Gram-negative, non-motile and non-saccharolytic bacterium. It is frequently isolated from the upper respiratory tract of dogs, cats and other mammals. Clinically, B. zoohelcum has been known to cause cellulitis, leg abscess, tenosynovitis, septicemia, pneumonia and meningitis, and is associated with animal bites. In addition, food-borne transmission was considered in a recent case report. We report a 73-year-old man with liver cirrhosis who had no history of dog bite but had dog exposure, who developed cellulitis of the left lower leg and B. zoohe

Causal bacteria of pyogenic liver abscess.

This is a review of bacteriologic data on 175 patients with pyogenic liver abscesses seen over a period of 8 years at Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Positive cultures were obtained from liver aspirates in 151 of the 163 patients in which cultures were taken. One hundred and twenty patient specimens grew one isolate and 31 specimens grew two or more isolates. A total of 149 aerobic gram-negative rods, 25 aerobic cocci and 29 anaerobes were isolated. Ninety of the 159 patients from whom blood was taken had positive cultures. In 11 patients, two or more isolates were grown concurrentl

Ralstonia pickettii bacteraemia in a cord blood transplant recipient.

A seven-year old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia underwent an HLA mismatched cord blood transplant. He developed grade 2 mucositis requiring morphine infusion and grade 3-4 hyperacute graft-versus-host disease affecting the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and liver requiring pulse methylprednisolone. On days 21, 23, and 24 post-transplant, blood culture obtained through the central line and periphery were positive for Ralstonia pickettii. The same strain (with the same biochemical profile and antibiotic susceptibility pattern) was also recovered from surveillance throat swab cultures from

[Bacterial infections of skin and soft tissues in filariasis].

Adenolymphangitis is a common occurrence in filarial lymphedema. Damage to the lymphatics and lymph nodes by F. bancrofti is followed by obliteration of lymph vessels and lymph stasis. Obstruction of lymphatics prevents the bacteria penetrating skin to be evacuated with lymph stream to regional lymph nodes. Colonization of dermis, subcutis and lymphatics evokes clinical symptoms of adenolymphangitis. The question arises which strains of bacteria are responsible for the acute and chronic types of adenolymphangitis. The most probable strains responsible for this condition belong to the cocci and

Antimicrobial activity and spectrum investigation of eight broad-spectrum beta-lactam drugs: a 1997 surveillance trial in 102 medical centers in the United States. Cefepime Study Group.

Because antimicrobial agents become less effective after the emergence of resistance mechanisms in clinically prevalent pathogens, physicians must utilize local, regional, and national antimicrobial susceptibility surveillance data to assist in choices of appropriate agents. An investigation of the spectrum and potency of eight broad-spectrum beta-lactam drugs (cefepime, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, imipenem, piperacillin with or without tazobactam, and ticarcillin/clavulanic acid) was performed using a common protocol and method (Etest; AB BIODISK, Solna, Sweden) in 102 clinical micr

Potentially multidrug-resistant non-fermentative Gram-negative pathogens causing nosocomial pneumonia.

Owing to its high morbidity and mortality, nosocomial pneumonia represents a particularly serious illness and one of the most frequent complications in ventilated patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Gram-negative microorganisms, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, are the most relevant pathogens responsible for particularly difficult-to-treat nosocomial pneumonia. The intrinsic resistance of these bacteria to many antimicrobial agents and, in addition, the variety of their increasingly recognised acquired resistance mechanisms mak

Community-based degradation of 4-chorosalicylate tracked on the single cell level.

4-Chlorosalicylate (4-CS) can be degraded completely by a bacterial consortium consisting of Pseudomonas reinekei (MT1), Achromobacter spanius (MT3) and Pseudomonas veronii (MT4). The fourth species Wautersiella falsenii (MT2) is thought to act as a 'necrotizer' of the community. Single cell approaches were used to follow every species' degradation activity within the community by assuming that growth and proliferation are activity markers for the utilization of 4-CS and its degradation pathway intermediates as carbon and energy sources. A primary/secondary antibody staining technique for spec

Rifaximin: in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity--a review.

In vitro inhibitory activity of rifaximin is directed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. It is effective in the treatment of gastrointestinal infections when given orally because of the high concentration of the drug remaining in the gut lumen. Laboratory investigations have been carried out to assess the in vitro activity of rifaximin on different bacterial strains isolated from both human and domestic animals. The objective of this project is to review the in vitro and in vivo activity of rifaximin against bacterial infection with Gram-negative rods, Gra

Microvirgula aerodenitrificans gen. nov., sp. nov., a new gram-negative bacterium exhibiting co-respiration of oxygen and nitrogen oxides up to oxygen-saturated conditions.

A denitrifier micro-organism was isolated from an upflow denitrifying filter inoculated with an activated sludge. The cells were Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive curved rods and very motile. They were aerobic as well as anoxic heterotrophs that had an atypical respiratory type of metabolism in which oxygen and nitrogen oxides were used simultaneously as terminal electron acceptors. The G&C content was 65 mol%. Our isolate was phenotypically similar to Comamonas testosteroni, according to classical systematic classification systems. However, a phylogenetic analysis based on the 165

Chronic Q fever-related dual-pathogen endocarditis: case series of three patients.

Following Coxiella burnetii infection, there is a 1 to 5% risk of chronic Q fever. Endocarditis, mycotic aneurysm, and vascular prosthesis infection are common manifestations. We present three patients with endocarditis by C. burnetii concomitant with another bacterial pathogen. Chronic Q fever should therefore be considered in all endocarditis patients in regions where Q fever is endemic.

Trichloroethylene degradation by toluene-oxidizing bacteria grown on non-aromatic substrates.

The potential of trichloroethylene (TCE) to induce and non-aromatic growth substrates to support TCE degradation in five strains (Pseudomonas mendocina KR1, Ralstonia pickettii PKO1, Pseudomonas putida F1, Burkholderia cepacia G4, B. cepacia PR1) of toluene-oxidizing bacteria was examined. LB broth and acetate did not support TCE degradation in any of the wild-type strains. In contrast, fructose supported the highest specific levels of TCE oxidation observed in each of the strains tested, except B. cepacia G4. We discuss the potential mechanisms and implications of this observation. In particu

Synergistic relationships in algal-bacterial microcosms for the treatment of aromatic pollutants.

The potential of algal-bacterial microcosms was studied for the biodegradation of salicylate, phenol and phenanthrene. The isolation and characterization of aerobic bacterial strains capable of mineralizing each pollutant were first conducted. Ralstonia basilensis was isolated for salicylate degradation, Acinetobacter haemolyticus for phenol and Pseudomonas migulae and Sphingomonas yanoikuyae for phenanthrene. The green alga Chlorella sorokiniana was then cultivated in the presence of the pollutants at different concentrations, showing increasing inhibitory effects in the following order: sali
