Immune responses to anaerobic gram-negative bacteria in health and disease.

In the serum of healthy and sick persons antibodies to Bacteroidaceae and Veillonella have been detected. The antibody titres to these anaerobic bacteria are commonly low, in adults, however, higher than in children. High antibody titres could be found in patients suffering from Crohn's disease and in cancer patients. Immune responses to anaerobic bacteria occur in periodontal processes, too. These antibodies belong mainly to the IgM class of immunoglobulins. On the contrary, antibodies observed in patients with sepsis belong to the IgG class.

Biochemical characterization of the strict anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria Tannerella forsythia by infrared micro-spectroscopy.

Tannerella forsythia is a fastidious S-layer Gram-negative, strict anaerobic, and highly pleomorphic bacterium associated with periodontal inflammatory processes, bone loss, cardiovascular mortality, systemic sequelae, sepsis, and preterm birth. One of the purposes of this study was to characterize, for the first time, Tannerella forsythia (ATCC 43037) using Fourier transform infrared micro-spectroscopy. The analysis aimed to establish a suitable methodology for obtaining reproducible spectra for the characterization of this microorganism, as well as to assign the vibrational bands using techn

Low antibiotic resistance among anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria in periodontitis 5 years following metronidazole therapy.

The objective of this study was to assess antibiotic susceptibility among predominant Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria isolated from periodontitis patients who 5 years prior had been subject to mechanical therapy with or without adjunctive metronidazole. One pooled sample was taken from the 5 deepest sites of each of 161 patients that completed the 5 year follow-up after therapy. The samples were analyzed by culture. A total number of 85 anaerobic strains were isolated from the predominant subgingival flora of 65/161 patient samples, identified, and tested for antibiotic susceptibility by MIC

National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards agar dilution susceptibility testing of anaerobic gram-negative bacteria.

One hundred nine recent clinical isolates of anaerobic gram-negative bacteria were tested in triplicate by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards agar dilution procedure for their susceptibility to 32 antimicrobial agents. All isolates were inhibited by imipenem, but there were significant numbers of strains resistant to other beta-lactam drugs, and therefore the in vitro response to these antimicrobial agents cannot be predicted. This was particularly true for the bile-resistant or Bacteroides fragilis group. beta-Lactamase production was detected in 82% of the bacteroides w

Impact of rapid pathogen identification of gram-negative anaerobic bacteria from blood cultures on antimicrobial stewardship.

Anaerobic bacteria are an important but understudied cause of bacteremia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to rapidly identify obligate anaerobic gram-negative bacteria directly from positive blood culture broth (PBCB) samples. This retrospective pre- and post-intervention study included patients with blood cultures positive for anaerobic gram-negative organisms, comparing outcomes before and after the implementation of a direct-from-PBCB MALDI-TOF MS workflow. The primary

Relationship between oral gram-negative anaerobic bacteria in saliva of the mother and the colonization of her edentulous infant.

Various gram-negative anaerobic bacterial species can be detected in the oral flora of edentulous infants. However, knowledge of the initial infection source is still scarce. Thirty Caucasian mothers (mean age 30 years) and their edentulous infants (mean age 3 months) were examined for the possible similarity of the oral gram-negative anaerobic flora. Paraffin-stimulated saliva was collected from the mothers. A pooled swab sample from mucosal surfaces and unstimulated saliva were collected from the infants. The samples were inoculated on nonselective and selective media and cultured aerobicall

[Frequency of detection and the species composition of anaerobic gram-negative nonsporulating bacteria in suppurative pathology in emergency surgery].

The improved technique of cultivation allowed to detect obligatorily anaerobic microorganisms in 58 out of 94 samples from patients with purulent inflammatory processes. The results of the studies showed that anaerobic microorganisms were most frequently isolated from the exudate of the abdominal cavity and the purulent discharge of wounds in peritonitis patients. Gram-negative nonsporulating bacilli made up 25.3% of all the isolated cultures. The identification of these microorganisms allowed to determine that in the exudate of the abdominal cavity, the discharge of surgical and posttraumatic

Oral Gram-negative anaerobic bacilli as a reservoir of β-lactam resistance genes facilitating infections with multiresistant bacteria.

Many β-lactamases have been described in various Gram-negative bacilli (Capnocytophaga, Prevotella, Fusobacterium, etc.) of the oral cavity, belonging to class A of the Ambler classification (CepA, CblA, CfxA, CSP-1 and TEM), class B (CfiA) or class D in Fusobacterium nucleatum (FUS-1). The minimum inhibitory concentrations of β-lactams are variable and this variation is often related to the presence of plasmids or other mobile genetic elements (MGEs) that modulate the expression of resistance genes. DNA persistence and bacterial promiscuity in oral biofilms also contribute to genetic transfor

Peritonitis from facultative anaerobic gram-negative bacilli likely due to translocation of bacteria from gut in a patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis.

The peritonitis caused by gram-negative organisms is a serious complication encountered in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, often causing high morbidity and mortality. There has been recognition of peritonitis caused by uncommon organisms because of improved microbiological detection techniques. The healthcare providers involved in the management of these patients should be very vigilant. We report a rare case of peritonitis caused by Citrobacter freundii. A 42-year-old male on peritoneal dialysis for five years presented with abdominal pain and cloudy effluent. The peritoneal fluid an

Differences between bloodstream infections involving Gram-positive and Gram-negative anaerobes.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to describe differences between bloodstream infections involving Gram-positive (GP) and Gram-negative (GN) anaerobic bacteria. METHODS: Patients with clinically significant anaerobic bacteremia detected between October 2016 and July 2022 in a tertiary hospital in Granada (Spain) were retrospectively included. Species identification was performed by MALDI-TOF MS and/or molecular methods. The association between variables was analyzed using contingency tables, applying the chi-square test when expected frequencies were adequate and the Fisher exact

Activity of cefamandole and other cephalosporins against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

The activity of cefamandole was comparable to that of cephalothin, cefazolin, and cephaloridine against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Diplococcus pneumoniae. In contrast, cefamandole was considerably more active than cephalothin, cefazolin, or cephaloridine against gram-negative facultative bacilli, including Haemophilus influenzae, the most striking disparities being noted with indole-positive Proteus and Enterobacter. Bacteroides fragilis was more susceptible to cefoxitin than to cefamandole or cefazolin (median minimal inhibitory concentration, approximately 8, 32, and

Laboratory detection of anaerobic bacteremia.

The possibility that mycobacteria may be found in blood cultures is a relatively recent discovery. Immunocompromised patients, especially those with advanced HIV infection, are often mycobacteremic with Mycobacterium tuberculosis or M. avium complex. Laboratory methods provide sensitive detection options for these pathogens.

[Bacteria isolated from surgical infections and their susceptibilities to antimicrobial agents. Special references to bacteria isolated between July 1995 and June 1996].

Isolated bacteria from infections in general surgery during the period from July 1994 to June 1995 were investigated in a multicenter study in Japan, and the following results were obtained. One hundred and sixty-four strains were isolated from primary infections, and 202 strains were isolated from postoperative infections. From primary infections, anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria were predominant, while from post operative infections, aerobic Gram-positive bacteria were predominant. Among aerobic Gram-positive bacteria, the isolation rate of Enterococcus faecalis was the highest, followed by

Are dental diseases examples of ecological catastrophes?

Dental diseases are among the most prevalent and costly diseases affecting industrialized societies, and yet are highly preventable. The microflora of dental plaque biofilms from diseased sites is distinct from that found in health, although the putative pathogens can often be detected in low numbers at normal sites. In dental caries, there is a shift towards community dominance by acidogenic and acid-tolerant Gram-positive bacteria (e.g. mutans streptococci and lactobacilli) at the expense of the acid-sensitive species associated with sound enamel. In contrast, the numbers and proportions of

The microbiology of the acute dental abscess.

The acute dental abscess is frequently underestimated in terms of its morbidity and mortality. The risk of potential serious consequences arising from the spread of a dental abscess is still relevant today with many hospital admissions for dental sepsis. The acute dental abscess is usually polymicrobial comprising facultative anaerobes, such as viridans group streptococci and the Streptococcus anginosus group, with predominantly strict anaerobes, such as anaerobic cocci, Prevotella and Fusobacterium species. The use of non-culture techniques has expanded our insight into the microbial diversit
