Acute peritonsillar abscess caused by Arcanobacterium haemolyticum.

A patient is reported with a peritonsillar abscess yielding Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. This appears to be only the fifth such case described in the medical literature and the first from Europe. The organism has been reported as an occasional cause of tonsillopharyngitis with rash, resembling infection with Streptococcus pyogenes but often unresponsive to penicillin therapy. A. haemolyticum easily passes unrecognized in bacteriological cultures as a result of its slow growth, coryneform appearance in the Gram's stain and weak haemolytic activity on conventional laboratory media.

Evaluation of the API Coryne test system for identification of Actinomyces pyogenes.

The present study was designed to evaluate the accuracy of the API Coryne test system for identification of Actinomyces pyogenes. The test system correctly identified 36 of 42 A. pyogenes and 4 of 5 comparatively studied Arcanobacterium haemolyticum-cultures. The biochemical profiles of the remaining 6 A. pyogenes- and 1 A. haemolyticum-cultures were not included in the analytical profile index. None of the cultures were misidentified. According to the API database (ATB Plus V 1.5.4.) the unidentified cultures could be correctly identified as A. pyogenes and A. haemolyticum respectively. A gre

Selected bacterial strains protect Artemia spp. from the pathogenic effects of Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2.

In this study Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 has been identified as a virulent pathogen for Artemia spp. Its infection route has been visualized with transmission electron microscopy. The pathogen affected microvilli and gut epithelial cells, disrupted epithelial cell junctions, and reached the body cavity, where it devastated cells and tissues. In vivo antagonism tests showed that preemptive colonization of the culture water with nine selected bacterial strains protected Artemia juveniles against the pathogenic effects. Two categories of the selected strains could be distinguished: (i) strains pr

The cytochrome composition of the meat spoilage bacterium Brochothrix thermosphacta: identification of cytochrome a3-and d-type terminal oxidases under various conditions.

Brochothrix thermosphacta, grown in batch culture in a yeast-dextrose broth, at temperatures from 30 degrees C to 10 degrees C, contained diverse membrane-bound respiratory cytochromes. Under conditions of moderate aeration, cytochromes of the a-, b- and d-type were detected at all growth temperatures, but the proportions changed as a function of temperature, with the spectra of cells grown at 10 or 15 degrees C being dominated by a-type cytochrome(s). Cytochrome a3 was detected by its reactions with CO and cyanide in cells from all growth conditions. An additional cytochrome a, which was not

[Evaluation of API Coryne System, version 2.0, for diphteroid gram-positive rods identification with clinical relevance].

The ability of the API Coryne system, version 2.0, to identify 178 strains of gram-positive rods was evaluated. Seventy eight isolates belonged to genus Corynebacterium and one hundred to related genera, all strains were isolated from clinical samples at the Laboratory of Bacteriology, Hospital de Clínicas José de San Martin (UBA) between 1995 and 2004. The isolates were identified according to von Graevenitz and Funke's scheme. One hundred and sixty two out of 178 strains (91%) were correctly identified at genus and species level (IC95 = 85.6-94.6), in 44 of them (24.7%) additional tests were

Septicemia due to Solobacterium moorei in a patient with multiple myeloma.

We report a case of bacteremia caused by Solobacterium moorei, an anaerobic, non-sporulated Gram-positive bacillus in a patient with a multiple myeloma. The source of infection was presumably related to multiple dento-alveolar abscesses. This is the first recovery of S. moorei from blood cultures.

Vancomycin-resistant Aureobacterium species cellulitis and bacteremia in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia.

A 39-year-old male with acute myelogenous leukemia and concomitant porphyria cutanea tarda was admitted to the hospital for consolidation chemotherapy of his leukemia. During his hospitalization, he developed cellulitis of the left hand and persistent bacteremia with a yellow-pigmented, nonfermenting coryneform bacterium that was identified as Aureobacterium sp. The portal of entry for the Aureobacterium infection was probably through the skin lesions due to porphyria cutanea tarda. The infection developed while the patient was receiving vancomycin prophylaxis, and the vancomycin MIC for the i

Antibody response to Arcanobacterium haemolyticum infection in humans.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum causes pharyngitis, exanthema, and other infections. The evidence of the pathogenicity of A. haemolyticum depends on clinical descriptions of culture-positive patients and a comparison of carrier rates of patients with pharyngitis and healthy, matched controls. In this investigation, the antibody response of the host was studied for the first time, using SDS-PAGE and Western blot analyses. Paired acute and convalescent sera showed development of antibodies to A. haemolyticum in 7 of 8 patients. The antibodies reacted primarily with four distinct cell wall-associate

Molecular identification of bacteria on the tongue dorsum of subjects with and without halitosis.

AIM: Compare the microbial profiles on the tongue dorsum in patients with halitosis and control subjects in a UK population using culture-independent techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Halitosis patients were screened according to our recently developed recruitment protocol. Scrapings from the tongue dorsum were obtained for 12 control subjects and 20 halitosis patients. Bacteria were identified by PCR amplification, cloning and sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. RESULTS: The predominant species found in the control samples were Lysobacter-type species, Streptococcus salivarius, Veillonella dispa

Identification of oral bacterial species associated with halitosis.

BACKGROUND: The authors examined the tongue bacteria associated with oral halitosis (bad breath originating from the oral cavity), focusing on noncultivable bacteria-bacteria that cannot be identified by bacterial culture techniques. METHODS: The authors took samples from the dorsal tongue surface of eight adult subjects with halitosis and five control subjects who did not have halitosis. They identified the bacteria in these samples by using both anaerobic culture and direct amplification of 16S ribosomal DNA, a method that can identify both cultivable and noncultivable microorganisms. They

Cellular fatty acid composition and phenotypic and cultural characterization of CDC fermentative coryneform groups 3 and 5.

Seventy strains of fermentative, asporogenous, gram-positive coccobacilli or short rods form two closely related groups which have been designated CDC fermentative coryneform groups 3 (32 strains, xylose fermenters) and 5 (38 strains, xylose nonfermenters). The two taxa are otherwise similar to each other phenotypically and culturally and by a distinctive Staphylococcus-like odor and by cellular fatty acid (CFA) composition. CDC group 3 and CDC group 5 strains have been isolated from clinical sources (blood, abscesses, and wounds but not urine or respiratory specimens) in Canada and the United

Helicovermis profundi gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel mesophilic, asporogenous bacterium within the Clostridia isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimney.

A novel mesophilic bacterial strain, designated S502T, was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent at Suiyo Seamount, Japan. Cells were Gram-positive, asporogenous, motile, and curved rods, measuring 1.6-5.6 µm in length. The strain was an obligate anaerobe that grew fermentatively on complex substrates such as yeast extract and Bacto peptone. Elemental sulfur stimulated the growth of the strain, and was reduced to hydrogen sulfide. The strain grew within a temperature range of 10-23 °C (optimum at 20 °C), pH range of 4.8-8.3 (optimum at 7.4), and a NaCl concentration range of 1.0-4.0% (w/v

Anaerostipes butyraticus sp. nov., an anaerobic, butyrate-producing bacterium from Clostridium cluster XIVa isolated from broiler chicken caecal content, and emended description of the genus Anaerostipes.

Four butyrate-producing isolates were obtained from the caecal content of a 4-week-old broiler chicken. The 16S rRNA gene sequences were determined and confirmed the close relatedness of the four isolates, which suggested that they were derived from a single bacterial clone. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that its closest relatives were members of cluster XIVa of the Clostridium subphylum of Gram-positive bacteria and that the closest related type strain was Anaerostipes caccae L1-92(T) (94.5 % similarity). Similarity levels of 96-98 % with sequences from uncultu

[Bacteriological and clinical aspects of corynebacterium].

The microbiologists use the term corynebacteria to describe aerobically growing, asporogenous, irregularly sharped gram-positive rods. They comprise strictly aerobic bacteria isolated from environment as well as preferentially anaerobic bacteria found in clinical specimens. A large part of these bacteria is considered as commensal of skin and mucous membranes. This group of organisms has recently been subjected to considerable taxonomic revisions, which have resulted in the proposal of several new species, many of them representing previous Centers for Diseases Control coryneform groups. [Characteristics of war wound infection].

War wounds are the most complex type of non-targeted injuries due to uncontrolled tissue damage of varied and multifold localizations, exposing sterile body areas to contamination with a huge amount of bacteria. Wound contamination is caused by both the host microflora and exogenous agents from the environment (bullets, cloth fragments, dust, dirt, water) due to destruction of the host protective barriers. War wounds are the consequence of destructive effects of various types of projectiles, which result in massive tissue devitalization, hematomas, and compromised circulation with tissue ische

Purification and characterization of chaperonin 60 and chaperonin 10 from the anaerobic thermophile Thermoanaerobacter brockii.

Chaperonin 60 and chaperonin 10 (GroEL and GroES homologues, respectively) have been isolated from extracts of the anaerobic thermophile Thermoanaerobacter brockii. A simple and rapid purification for chaperonin 60 made use of hydrophobic and anion-exchange chromatographies, and could be readily scaled up; approximately 2 mg pure chaperonin 60 was obtained/g cells. In contrast with all other prokaryotic chaperonin 60 proteins that have been studied, which are tetradecamers, including those from Thermus sp., the T. brockii protein is a heptamer, and as isolated was not in association with chape
