Custodial grandparenting: perceptions of loss by non-custodial grandparent peers.

In order to explore the generalizability of perceptions of the losses experienced by grandparents raising their grandchildren, 610 traditional/non-custodial grandparents, who had no custodial responsibility for their grandchildren, read a randomly assigned scenario depicting a grandmother and her grandchild, wherein scenarios varied in terms of grandchild gender, the presence or absence of grandchild problems, and the reason for role assumption. They then completed the Perceptions of Loss (PLS) scale, where higher scores indexed greater awareness of loss. Results suggested that perceptions of

Bisphosphonates: from grandparents to grandchildren.

Bisphosphonates are synthetic analogues of pyrophosphate that inhibit bone resorption by their action on osteoclasts. Bisphosphonates have been extensively used in the elderly with primary and secondary osteoporosis, Paget's disease, and hypercalcemia of malignancy. In recent years, bisphosphonates have been used to treat children acutely for resistant hypercalcemia and chronically for various metabolic bone diseases. The theoretical concerns of possible adverse effects of these drugs on the growing skeleton have not been proven to be true. In the present review, we have critically analyzed th

Ancestral childhood environmental exposures occurring to the grandparents and great-grandparents of the ALSPAC study children.

Background: Cohort studies tend to be designed to look forward from the time of enrolment of the participants, but there is considerable evidence that the previous generations have a particular relevance not only in the genes that they have passed on, their cultural beliefs and attitudes, but also in the ways in which previous environmental exposures may have had non-genetic impacts, particularly for exposures during fetal life or in childhood. Methods: To investigate such non-genetic inheritance, we have collected information on the childhoods of the ancestors of the cohort of births comprisi

What's the Mtrr with your grandparents?

Reduced folate levels can cause developmental defects and megaloblastic anemia. Padmanabhan et al. (2013) show that mutation in mice of a folate metabolism gene, Mtrr, which encodes for methionine synthase reductase, causes developmental defects not only in the mutant progeny, but also in genetically wild-type descendants for up to four generations.

Epithelial ovarian carcinoma and European birthplace of grandparents.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether the risk of ovarian carcinoma was related to latitude or to genetically based patterns of European geographic origin. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied the countries of origin of European-born grandparents of 168 newly diagnosed patients in two hospitals in New York City, compared with 159 controls from similar neighborhoods. We measured the risk of this cancer associated with having one or more white, non-Jewish grandparents born in North Europe versus none or in South Europe versus none. We also classified geographic origins in other

Health and health perceptions among Kenyan grandparents.

The dramatic increase in the aging population in developed countries has led to an explosion of research on health and aging in the United States. Few studies, however, have been conducted in developing countries, even though many of these populations are experiencing a faster rate of growth in the 65+ population. Thus, although our knowledge of health and aging has increased, our knowledge of the variation in health as people age is limited. While the numbers of older adults is increasing in Africa, very little is known about the health and well-being of African elders. Recently, a growing nu

Impact of caring for grandchildren on the health of grandparents in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVES: To understand how caring for grandchildren affects the physical and mental health of grandparents in Taiwan. METHOD: Grandparents aged 50 and older from 4 waves of the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (1993-2003, n = 3,711) were divided into 7 categories based on living arrangement and caregiving history. Generalized estimation equations controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and disease status were used to estimate the relationship between caregiving and 4 outcomes: self-rated physical health, mobility limitation, life satisfaction, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS:

Exploring grandparents' psychosocial responses to childhood cancer: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: A childhood cancer diagnosis is a traumatic experience for patients and their families. However, little is known about the effect on grandparents. We aimed to investigate the negative psychosocial impact, coping strategies, and positive outcomes of grandparents of childhood cancer patients in Switzerland. METHODS: We collected data using a semi-structured interview guide and applied qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: We conducted 20 interviews with 23 grandparents (57% female; mean age = 66.9 years; SD = 6.4; range = 57.0-82.4) of 13 affected children (69% female; mean age = 7

Rural Grandparent Headed Households: A Qualitative Description.

PURPOSE: To explore, from an emic perspective, the unique socio ecological context in which rural grandparent headed households (GHH) exist, and therefore provide a foundation for the development of culturally-appropriate interventions that might impact their health. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study was based on the conduct of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with fifteen grandparents, residing in rural Appalachian Kentucky, who were the primary caretakers for their grandchildren. The interviews were conducted using an interview guide that was based on the premises of the Socia

Grandparents and siblings of children with congenital heart disease.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study of the process of grandparent involvement with siblings of preschool children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. BACKGROUND: An increasing number of grandparents are involved in parental or near-parental roles with their grandchildren. Most research concerns grandparent involvement due to parental issues (e.g. teenage pregnancy, mental illness, addiction). Some research addresses grandparent involvement when their grandchild is ill. Grandparents''double concern' for both their adult children and their ill grandchildren is reported in the literature. I

Five decades with grandparent donors: The Norwegian strategy and experience.

Living donors (LDs) are preferred over DDs for renal transplantation in children due to superior GS. Oslo University Hospital has never restricted living donation by upper age. The aim of this study was to investigate long-term outcomes using grandparents (GPLD) compared to PLD. Retrospective nationwide review in the period 1970-2017. First renal graft recipients using a GPLD were compared to PLD kidney recipients for long-term renal function and GS. 278 children (≤18 years) received a first renal transplant: 27/251 recipients with a GPLD/PLD. GPLD (median 59 (42-74) years) were significantly

Birth weight and the risk of cardiovascular disease in the maternal grandparents.

Pregnancy complications and cardiovascular disease share some common determinants. It has previously been hypothesized that family history of cardiovascular disease would be associated with low birth weight. Records from 120,317 Scottish births, 1992-2006, were linked to hospital admission and death certificate data for 71,681 pairs of maternal grandparents. There was a negative relation between the birth weight of the baby and the risk of either grandparent's experiencing ischemic heart disease (for a 1-kg increase in birth weight, hazard ratio = 0.86, 95% confidence interval: 0.83, 0.89) or

Grandparent donors in a living related renal transplant program.

Clinical renal transplantation is limited by the number of cadaver and living related donors. The use of kidneys from older donors and non-first-degree relatives, including grandparents, has increased the supply of organs for transplantation. The purpose of this study was to assess donor and recipient outcomes after living related renal transplants between grandparent donors and grandchild recipients. Fifteen living related renal transplants using grandparent donors were performed at the University of Minnesota from 1971 to 1995. All medical records from donors and recipients were retrospectiv

Children's Birthday Gatherings and SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Grandparents.

IMPORTANCE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the major burden of morbidity and mortality was in older age groups. While within-household transmission is well documented, the wider role of social networks for transmission to the older population is less well understood. OBJECTIVE: To estimate whether children's birthdays were associated with grandparents' SARS-CoV-2 infection risk. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nationwide, register-based cohort study included grandparents residing in Denmark with 1 to 5 grandchildren aged 0 to 15 years during the period between February 19, 2020, and F

Risk factors for unintentional injuries in children: are grandparents protective?

OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify sociodemographic and familial correlates of injury in children aged 2 to 3 years. METHODS: The Healthy Steps data set describes 5565 infants who were enrolled at birth in 15 US cities in 1996-1997 and had follow-up until they were 30 to 33 months of age. Data were linked to medical claims reporting children's medically attended office visits by age 30 to 33 months. Each claim was accompanied by a reason for the visit. An analytical sample of 3449 was derived from the children who could be effectively followed up and linked to medical charts. Missing data were

Challenges and Strategies for Conducting Research With Grandparent-Grandchild Dyads.

BACKGROUND: Given a marked increase in the number of grandparents who play a caregiving role for their grandchildren, there is a parallel urgency for more research involving grandparent-grandchild dyads. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe methodological challenges we encountered when conducting grandparent-grandchild dyadic research, some of which were challenges specific to working with dyads where the grandparents were caregivers to the child participants and others, which were challenges of a sort that might be encountered in any research involving data collection with multig

The impact of grandchild caregiving on depression among grandparents: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Grandparents' involvement in grandchild caregiving has become an increasingly common social phenomenon worldwide. Compared with non-caregivers, grandparents' depression may be influenced by caregiving responsibilities. However, existing studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding this association. METHODS: Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, this scoping review systematically mapped the existing literature on the relationship between grandchild caregiving and grandparents' depression. Eight academic databases were searched, yielding 3,174 records. After four screening
