[Logopedic rehabilitation of laryngeal granulomas].

Posterior laryngeal granuloma is an infrequent pathology of multidisciplinary interest. Actually, its real prevalence is difficult to quantify because in some cases it is asymptomatic and in other instances it may either be reabsorbed or eliminated spontaneously. It is located at the vocal apophysis of the arytenoid or, less frequently, above it or on the laryngeal side of the arytenoid. The many etiologic factors (laryngeal intubation, gastro-esophageal refluxes, blunt trauma of the larynx, vocal dysfunction), sometimes concomitant and with the possible addition of enhancing circumstances (up

[Laryngeal granulomas (literature review)].

Laryngeal granulomas are a benign disease characterized by a high recurrence rate, ranging from 20% to 93%. This article provides an overview of domestic and foreign literature, provides basic information about laryngeal granulomas, and highlights their etiology, pathogenesis, clinic, and treatment methods. The importance of searching for provoking factors of the development of this disease and new ways of its treatment is substantiated.

Spontaneous Giant Laryngeal Granuloma in the Absence of Laryngeal Injury.

The etiology of laryngeal granuloma can typically be attributed to endotracheal intubation, vocal abuse, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. There is a strong male predominance, except in cases due to intubation, where incidence is higher in women. We report a case of spontaneous development of multiple granulomas in a female with no history of intubation who presented with hoarseness and massive bilateral supraglottic masses obscuring her glottis. The disparity between the massive lesions and asymptomatic reflux highlights the need for further research in the pathophysiology of laryngeal gran

Laryngeal granulomas associated with superior laryngeal nerve paresis.

The association between superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) paresis and laryngeal granuloma formation has not been described earlier. The aim of this study was to present a series of patients with isolated unilateral SLN paresis who developed contralateral vocal process granulomas. The study design was a retrospective chart review including all patients presenting to Indiana University from February 2006 to August 2007 with laryngeal electromyography (LEMG)-documented unilateral SLN paresis and evidence of laryngeal granuloma on videostroboscopy. Patient history, examination, LEMG findings, and res

[Laryngeal contact granuloma--a psychosomatic disorder?].

In a multidimensional design using the hypothesis of a psychosomatic genesis, 28 patients (1 female, 27 male) showed, in their personality profile, increased scores in 'impulsiveness', 'emotionality (neuroticism)', 'strain' and 'inhibition'. In addition to the voice disorders other somatic symptoms were observed, especially general symptoms as dysthymia, depression and excessive vegetative stimulation. Their social competence was reduced by the fear of making contacts and the inability 'to say no'. Also psychosocial stress factors were registered due to loss of a loved one with feelings of an

Fatal asphyxia due to large laryngeal granuloma.

Laryngeal granuloma, vocal process granuloma, or post-intubation granuloma are benign, inflammatory lesions of the arytenoid cartilage vocal process. The etiology of laryngeal granulomas is multifactorial, such as chronic irritation due to endotracheal intubation, vocal cord injury or trauma, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. They can arise postoperatively after mucosal injury due to orotracheal intubation. Clinical manifestations include voice change and dyspnea, which may start one to four months after extubation and may rarely lead to asphyxia. We presented a case of death due to glottic

[Infantile dyspnea due to pyogenic laryngeal granuloma].

Two appearances are outstanding in this case report. First is the clinical picture of chronic laryngeal stridor of a child due to an acquired haemangioma. And that the anatomopathologic subtype of angioma is a pyogenic granuloma noteworthy, as we shall see, the use of the term "pyogenic granuloma" based only on anatomopathological findings in order to circumscribe this lesion.

Laryngeal Granuloma - Benefit in Treatment with Zinc Supplementation?

Laryngeal granulomas present as contact and postintubation ulcers and granulomas. Essentially, a contact granuloma is a pseudotumor of the lateral wall of the posterior glottis. The most common etiological factor is voice abuse, with predisponing factors such as reflux disease. Postintubation ulcers and granulomas, although of different etiology, according to all the other traits belong to this clinical entity. The therapy of choice is conservative treatment. Surgical laser excision is indicated for resistant cases and those whose size is causing respiratory distress. Treatment of laryngeal gr

[A case of a laryngeal granuloma detached by tracheal intubation].

Unique risks are involved in tracheal intubation with a laryngeal granuloma lodged in the subglottis and special precautions must be taken to manage such intubation. Reported is a case of laryngeal granuloma, which was detached from the larynx by the intubation. We discuss the management of tracheal intubation in the aforementioned case.

Pulsed dye laser treatment of laryngeal granulomas.

Laryngeal granulomas are effectively treated with antireflux therapy and speech therapy. Failure to respond leads to treatment with Botox or surgical excision. We report on the use of the pulsed dye laser for treating chronic granulomas that do not respond to standard therapy. We performed a retrospective review from September 2002 to September 2003. Patients identified with chronic granulomas that were not responding to standard therapy were treated in our office with the pulsed dye laser. Ten patients were identified; the mean age was 58 years. Two patients underwent more than one pulsed dye

Clinical evolution of laryngeal granulomas: treatment and prognosis.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To study the response to treatment by patients with granulomas not related to surgery, considering their respective causes. METHODS: Retrospective study of larynx granulomas seen at the Instituto da Laringe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) from June 1996, totaling 66 patients, being 20 (30,3%) diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux syndrome, 22 (33,3%) due to vocal abuse, 15 (22,7%) to postorotracheal intubation, and 9 (13,6%) of idiopathic cause. FINDINGS: Of the 66 patients diagnosed, 10 did not start the treatment, with only 56 being analyzed, 6 of whom later abandoned the treatm

Laryngeal granuloma in the early stages of Wegener's granulomatosis.

Non-healing granulomata of the upper or lower respiratory tract often cause diagnostic and therapeutic problems. A case of Wegener's granulomatosis is reported, which during the first year of illness presented only with signs of a laryngeal granuloma. When severe renal disease developed and cytostatic therapy was prompted, the laryngeal lesion showed an excellent response to the treatment. The case illustrates the difficulties encountered in the management of patients with Wegener's granulomatosis.

[Laryngeal granuloma. Aetiology, clinical signs, diagnostic procedures, and treatment].

Vocal cord granulomas are benign inflammatory lesions of the vocal cords. They are usually located over the vocal process of the arytenoid cartilage. A corresponding ulcer on the contralateral side is a common finding. Clinical signs include foreign body sensation, a need to repeatedly clear one's throat, hoarseness, and reduced voice resilience. Voice abuse and gastro-oesophageal reflux are commonly cited important aetiological factors. Differentiation from malignant lesions is usually possible by history and clinical examination; biopsy is only rarely necessary. The primary treatment is spee
