Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is an uncommon chronic granulomatous condition with a multifactorial etiology and pathogenesis. Genetic, immunologic, allergic, and infectious mechanisms have been implicated. OFG is often used as a descriptor to encompass all entities with orofacial swelling and histologic evidence of noncaseating granulomas. The diagnosis of OFG should prompt evaluation for provocative factors. The cause of most cases of OFG remains obscure. The clinician must consider mycobacterial infections, deep fungal infections, sarcoidosis, rosacea, and Crohn disease (CD). In addition, O

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a rare, idiopathic disorder of the orofacial region. It is clinically characterized by persistent and/or recurrent enlargement of the soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region, often manifesting as labial enlargement and swelling of intraoral sites such as the gingiva, tongue, and buccal mucosa. Full-thickness mucosal biopsy reveals noncaseating granulomatous inflammation, similar to Crohn's disease and sarcoidosis. Thus, OFG must be distinguished from other chronic granulomatous disorders. We report a case of a young female patient who presented with

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a condition manifesting clinically with chronic swelling of the mouth and/or face, notably with swelling of the lips and oral mucosa, a full-thickness, erythematous gingivitis and mucosal ulceration of various clinical types. Some patients may also present with neurological findings, for example facial palsy. Biopsy of affected tissue shows lymphoedema, with or without granulomatous inflammation. The oral lesions in OFG are histologically indistinguishable from the oral lesions in Crohn's disease (CD) and other systemic granulomatous disorders. It is a conditi

Orofacial granulomatosis is an uncommon clinicopathological entity describing patients who have oral lesions characterized by persistent and/or recurrent labial enlargement, oral ulcers and a variety of other orofacial features, who on lesional biopsy have lymphoedema and non-caseating granulomas. The aetiology of oral lesions with non-caseating granulomas includes oral Crohn's disease (some patients with oral lesions will develop typical bowel symptoms of Crohn's disease in ensuing months to years), tooth-associated infections, sarcoidosis and food or contact allergies. Treatment of orofacial

Orofacial granulomatosis is a chronic relapsing-remitting inflammatory condition that shares a similar phenotypic presentation to some other granulomatous diseases, particularly Crohn's disease. However, subtle clinical and pathological differences justify it as a separate disease entity. Previous studies have assessed the effectiveness of interventions used in the management of orofacial granulomatosis. This article reviews the management options available. A literature search was conducted to identify studies, in English, which assessed the effect of non-pharmacological and pharmacological i

An 18-year-old girl was referred to the Department of Oral Medicine with upper lip swelling. She was in good general health and laboratory tests were within the normal range. Histopathologic diagnosis did not reveal the presence of granulomas. This is consistent with the finding that 30% of patients with orofacial granulomatosis do not have granulomas on their biopsies. The patient was treated with intralesional steroids once a week for three weeks. The lesion subsided, but not completely, and recurred partially after ketchup intake. This case report highlights the fact that in every patient w

BACKGROUND, AIMS: Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a descriptive term used for granulomatous disorders of the face and oral cavity that may occur for a variety of reasons, some of which result in significant morbidity and mortality. Although rarely, a granular enlargements of the gingiva may be the first clinical manifestation of OFG, preceding other local or systemic manifestations.
METHOD: We will report a case of OFG that showed an atypical and monosymptomatic onset with a generalized hyperplastic gingivitis that preceded other facial and mucosal features by several weeks.
RESULT: Consid

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by lip swelling and gingival alterations. OFG occurs either as a separate clinical entity or associated with a systemic disorder such as Crohn's disease (CD). The purpose of this paper is to report the case of a 13-year old boy who presented with marked granulomatous gingival inflammation and stomach discomfort. Periodontal therapy resulted in only slight reduction in gingival inflammation and enlargement. The diagnosis of OFG, which was evidently associated with inflammation in the bowel, was based on the gingival

OBJECTIVES: Orofacial granulomatosis has mostly been described in reports of very small numbers of cases. Few large case groups have been described. The aim of this study was to describe the demographics, symptoms, clinical features and laboratory findings in a large cohort of cases.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Clinical and laboratory data for 119 cases of orofacial granulomatosis who attended oral medicine clinics in Dublin, Ireland, were examined for demographic characteristics at the time of first presentation. The male/female ratio was approximately 1:1, with a median age (and range) of 28 (5-8

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is an uncommon disease, usually presenting as recurrent or persistent swelling of the soft tissues in the orofacial region, predominantly lips (cheilitis granulomatosa). The cause of this illness is unknown. OFG may also be part of the triad of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) and some consider it a monosymptomatic form of MRS. We describe a case of a Croatian male patient with recurrent swelling limited to the upper lip for the past 6 years. After establishing the diagnosis, we performed intralesional triamcinolone injections (16 mg, twice on a weekly schedul

The Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome is a rare disorder of unknown etiology characterized by a triad of recurrent orofacial swelling, relapsing facial paralysis, and fissured tongue. Exacerbations and recurrences are common. The orofacial swelling is characterized by fissured, reddish-brown, swollen, nonpruritic lips or firm edema of the face. The facial palsy is indistinguishable from Bell's palsy. The fissured tongue is seen in one third to one half of patients and, although the least common manifestation, its presence assists in diagnosis. The classic triad is not seen frequently in its comple

Granulomatosis is any condition characterized by the formation of multiple nodules or granulomas in the soft tissues. Differential diagnosis for orofacial region includes a wide spectrum of diseases, but most of these lesions present histopathologically as noncaseating granulomas, giving a nonspecific depiction and leading to a diagnostic impasse. In the absence of any diagnosable entity, the disease is labelled as "orofacial granulomatosis". A nine-year-old girl child reported with recurrent gingival enlargement and persistent macrochelia which histopathologically presented as noncaseating gr

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is an uncommon disease characterized by persistent or recurrent soft tissue enlargement, oral ulceration and a variety of other orofacial features. It could be an oral manifestation of a systemic disease. For a correct differential diagnosis, local and systemic conditions characterized by granulomatous inflammation should be excluded using appropriate clinical and laboratory investigations. In fact, the diagnosis of OFG may be confirmed only by histopathological identification of noncaseating granulomas. The literature from 1943 to 2014 was reviewed with emphasis

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical features of a series of patients with orofacial granulomatosis (OFG).
STUDY DESIGN: Twenty patients diagnosed with OFG at Bellvitge Hospital (Barcelona, Spain) from 1985 to 2010 were included in the study.
RESULTS: All of our patients (9 men and 11 women, median age 48.1 years) presented with labial swelling. Six patients presented with recurrent orofacial swelling, 12 with permanent swelling, and 2 with progressive swelling. Fissured tongue was observed in 9 cases, and 2 patients presented with recurrent episodes of periphe
