BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Grasslands in the Terai-Duar Savanna and Grasslands ecoregion, located at the base of the Himalayas, are disturbance-dependent ecosystems where grassland loss due to woody encroachment has been reported in recent decades. However, some of this loss is offset by grassland emergence, but the extent and drivers of grassland expansion remain poorly understood. Here, we aim to study the relationship between grassland emergence, ecosystem characteristics, and disturbance factors.
METHODS: We analyzed satellite-based land cover classifications (Landsat TM/OLI) from 1988 to 2019

BACKGROUND: The symptoms of patients with respiratory disease are influenced by local environmental factors. The incidence of allergic rhinitis in grassland areas was significantly higher than that in non-grassland areas. We aimed to compare the profiles of chronic rhinitis patients obtained during the autumn pollen season in Baotou (grassland city) and Beijing (non-grassland city), China.
METHODS: Questionnaire surveys and allergen testing were conducted on 1170 and 1232 patients with chronic rhinitis visiting the Second Affiliated Hospital of Baotou Medical College and Beijing Tongren Hospi

Natural grasslands are being progressively degraded around the world due to climate change and socioeconomic factors. Most of the drivers, processes, and consequences of grassland degradation are studied separately, and it is not yet clear whether the change characteristics and influence factors of adjacent areas of grassland are identical. We analyzed changes in grassland area and quality, and the influences of climate changes and socioeconomic factors from 1980-2018 in Maqu County, Xiahe County and Luqu County on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). We found that areas with high and medi

Climate change can alter ecosystem stability, yet how seasonally asymmetric warming or drought reshapes stability across timescales remains unresolved. To address this, we conducted two multiyear field experiments in Tibetan alpine grasslands, investigating how season-specific warming or drought alters the seasonal and interannual stability of plant community biomass. Spring warming increased both seasonal and interannual stability, whereas year-round warming only enhanced seasonal stability. Summer drought also enhanced seasonal stability, but season-specific droughts showed only weak effects

This is a critical moment for land use policy globally, with many countries (e.g. the UK and the European Union) currently undertaking significant green reforms of their agricultural policies. Despite their importance for maintaining agricultural outputs and plant diversity, the effects of artificial soil enrichment on pollinators remain poorly understood. Our two-year study at the world's longest-running ecological experiment, Park Grass, Rothamsted, examines the relationship between soil fertilisation, grassland yield and biodiversity. Our data show a large and significant negative effect of

As a result of climate and land-use changes, grasslands have been subjected to intensifying drought regimes. Extreme droughts could interfere in the positive feedbacks between grasses and soil water content, pushing grasslands across critical thresholds of productivity and leading them to collapse. If this happens, systems may show hysteresis and costly management interventions might be necessary to restore predrought productivity. Thus, neglecting critical transitions may lead to mismanagement of grasslands and to irreversible loss of ecosystem services. Rainfall manipulation experiments cons

Soils are critical reservoirs of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs)1,2, which are strongly shaped by microbial interactions and environmental conditions and are therefore highly sensitive to disturbance2-6. Although climate warming is recognized as one of the most significant disturbances to microbial communities and their functions7-10, its impacts on soil resistomes remain poorly understood. Here we investigated the effects of decade-long experimental warming on ARGs in grassland soils using integrated experimental and computational approaches. Our results revealed that ARG abundance substan

Grasslands are vital for providing wildlife habitats, essential ecosystem services, and food to humanity. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2), as a key driver of climate change, has substantial effects on grasslands. Nonetheless, a holistic quantification on the response of the nitrogen cycle to eCO2 in global grasslands is lacking. Here, we show that solely eCO2 could increase the net primary productivity (NPP) in grasslands by 10% (95% confidence interval, 8-12%), yet simultaneously decrease leaf nitrogen content by 8% (95% confidence interval, 5-10%). When considering the effects

The negative effect of increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) pollution on grassland biodiversity is now incontrovertible. However, the recent introduction of cleaner technologies in the UK has led to reductions in the emissions of nitrogen oxides, with concomitant decreases in N deposition. The degree to which grassland biodiversity can be expected to 'bounce back' in response to these improvements in air quality is uncertain, with a suggestion that long-term chronic N addition may lead to an alternative low biodiversity state. Here we present evidence from the 160-year-old Park Grass Experiment

Nitrogen deposition on temperate steppe was monitored from November 2011 to October 2012 in Taipusi County, Inner Mongolia. The dry deposition of gaseous nitrogen compounds was calculated based on online-monitored atmospheric concentrations of NH3 and NO2 and dry deposition velocity simulated by CMAQ model. The wet deposition, dry deposition of particle, and throughfall deposition were also estimated by collecting rainfall, dust fall, and throughfall samples and the chemical analysis of NH4+ and NO3-concentrations. Results showed that the total deposition of nitrogen was up to 3.43 g x (m2 x a

Grassland birds are among the most rapidly declining groups of species, largely due to historical habitat losses that have led to extinction debts. Beyond direct habitat manipulations (e.g., prescribed fire), conservation strategies for grassland birds often adopt a landscape-scale perspective, particularly when guiding decisions on reserve acquisition, prioritizing management across existing reserves, and restoring habitat. Additionally, climate is increasingly recognized as a critical consideration for grassland bird conservation, since temperature influences survival and nest success, while

Primary production underpins much of ecosystem functioning and is often limited by nutrient and water availability. Ongoing global increases in nutrient inputs and interannual precipitation variability are thus likely to impact primary production, with unclear consequences for interannual variability in plant biomass. We used data from 35 grasslands in the Nutrient Network coordinated fertilization experiment to test if nutrient addition alters the response of plant biomass to year-to-year variation in growing season precipitation, and whether the effects of nutrient addition vary with factors

One key unresolved question in ecology is what drives temporal trends in biodiversity-stability relationships and how these trends link to ecosystem functioning. This knowledge gap reflects a limited understanding of interspecific interactions in biodiversity-stability relationships. Using plant productivity data from a 20-year grassland biodiversity experiment, complemented by a paired 5-year experiment that controlled for legacy effects, we disentangled the contributions of species-specific dynamics and interaction-dependent processes to plant community stability. Over 20 years, the stabilis

Rhizosphere microbiota, serving as pivotal drivers of multifunctionality in grassland ecosystems, are jointly shaped by the dual influences of biotic and abiotic factors. Among biotic components, plant functional types selectively modulate microbial communities through root exudate specificity, while soil fauna (e.g., nematodes and earthworms) drive microbial interaction networks via biophysical disturbances and trophic cascades. However, excessive nematode grazing suppresses the hyphal extension of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Moderate grazing facilitates the proliferation of ammonia-o

Previous research has shown that plant diversity influences N and P cycles. However, the effect of plant diversity on complete ecosystem N and P budgets has not yet been assessed. For 20 plots of artificially established grassland mixtures differing in plant diversity, we determined N and P inputs by bulk and dry deposition and N and P losses by mowing (and subsequent removal of the biomass) and leaching from April 2003 to March 2004. Total deposition of N and P was 2.3 +/- 0.1 and 0.2 +/- 0.01 g m(-2) yr(-1), respectively. Mowing was the main N and P loss. The net N and P budgets were negativ

Old-growth grasslands assemble over millennia and support high biodiversity and many ecosystem services, but continue to undergo widespread destruction for production of crops, timber, and minerals. How biodiversity recovers after grassland destruction and the functional consequences of this recovery can be informed by plant functional traits-i.e., morpho-physiological features that influence growth, survival, and reproduction. Yet we lack understanding of how functional traits differ between old-growth and secondary (i.e., recovering) grassland plant species at the global scale, hindering und

BACKGROUND: Major biological and cultural innovations in late Pliocene hominin evolution are frequently linked to the spread or fluctuating presence of C(4) grass in African ecosystems. Whereas the deep sea record of global climatic change provides indirect evidence for an increase in C(4) vegetation with a shift towards a cooler, drier and more variable global climatic regime beginning approximately 3 million years ago (Ma), evidence for grassland-dominated ecosystems in continental Africa and hominin activities within such ecosystems have been lacking.

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are essential nutrients for primary producers and decomposers in terrestrial ecosystems. Although climate change affects terrestrial N cycling with important feedbacks to plant productivity and carbon sequestration, the impacts of climate change on the relative availability of N with respect to P remain highly uncertain. In a semiarid grassland in Wyoming, USA, we studied the effects of atmospheric CO(2) enrichment (to 600 ppmv) and warming (1.5/3.0°C above ambient temperature during the day/night) on plant, microbial and available soil pools of N and P.
