Development of gravity-sensing organs in altered gravity.

Experiments are described in which the development of the gravity-sensing organs was studied in newt larvae reared in microgravity on the IML-2 mission and in Aplysia embryos and larvae reared on a centrifuge at 1 to 5 g. In Aplysia embryos, the statolith (single dense mass on which gravity and linear acceleration act) was reduced in size in a graded fashion at increasing g. In early post-metamorphic Aplysia or even in isolated statocysts from such animals, the number of statoconia produced is reduced at high g. Newt larvae launched before any of the otoconia were formed and reared for 15 days

Gravity-mediated liquid metal redistribution in asymmetric sawtooth microchannels for tilt sensing.

Controlling liquid metal (LM) wetting in confined microstructures is essential for reliable liquid-state electronics. Here, well-defined sawtooth microchannels are fabricated by soft replication from a metallic master, enabling systematic investigation of the relationship between channel geometry and electrical response. During injection, pressure decay produces graded LM filling within the sawtooth valleys. Upon tilting, gravity induces localized and angle-dependent LM redistribution rather than uncontrolled bulk sliding, thereby modifying the effective conductive pathway and generating an ap

Gravity-sensing device for measuring bending angles in digestive endoscopes: Design and clinical evaluation.

We developed a novel, gravity-sensing device to measure bending angles of digestive endoscopes, addressing inefficiency and inaccuracy of traditional planar measurement cards. This single-operator tool utilizes a freely rolling ball bearing within a calibrated ring to quantify angles. A multicenter instrument comparison demonstrated that the device significantly improved measurement efficiency and consistency while reducing associated maintenance costs, offering a practical solution for endoscopy unit quality control.

Orthostatic intolerance: different abnormalities in the neural sympathetic response to a gravitational stimulus.

In this paper we shall focus on the different abnormalities in the neural sympathetic response to a gravitational stimulus, characterising syndromes with symptoms of orthostatic intolerance. In Vaso vagal Syncope, an increase or a reduction of cardiac and vascular sympathetic modulation have been described in occasional and habitual fainters, respectively. Pure Autonomic Failure (PAF) is characterized by a global cardiovascular denervation. Accordingly, the spectral markers of cardiac and vascular sympathetic modulation are absent or reduced. However, a concomitant vagal diminished activity is

Visually simulated altered gravity modulates perceived object weight.

Gravity is a fundamental force acting on all objects on Earth. It is therefore unsurprising that the brain has internalized regularities associated with terrestrial gravity. An internal model of gravity is thought to arise from the integration of vestibular, visual, proprioceptive and visceral sensory cues. However, it remains unclear whether this internal representation of gravity contributes to the perception of physical object properties. Object weight is determined by the product of its mass and gravitational acceleration. Although previous studies have examined how an object's visual prop

Function of otolith organ in goldfish revealed from analysis of eye movement induced by acceleration.

An otolith organ on ground behave as a detector of both gravity and linear acceleration, and play an important role in controlling posture and eye movement for tilt of the head or translational motion. On the other hand, a gravitational acceleration ingredient to an otolith organ disappears in microgravity environment. However, linear acceleration can be received by otolith organ and produce a sensation that is different from that on Earth. It is suggested that in microgravity signal from the otolith organ may cause abnormality of posture control and eye movement. Therefore, the central nervou

Stopped-light-enhanced gravitational force sensing.

As the weakest fundamental force, gravity yields only small accelerations from millimetre-scale masses, making them difficult to detect. Detecting the gravitational fields of microscopic objects is important for microscale sensing, imaging or studies of the impact of the quantum state of an object on gravity. Cavendish-type torsion balances can sensitively measure gravity from small source masses, but their integration with micro- and nanophotonic readout remains challenging. Here we show gravitational-force sensing of a millimetre-sized mass using a torsion pendulum integrated with optical mi

Internal models and prediction of visual gravitational motion.

Baurès et al. [Baurès, R., Benguigui, N., Amorim, M.-A., & Siegler, I. A. (2007). Intercepting free falling objects: Better use Occam's razor than internalize Newton's law. Vision Research, 47, 2982-2991] rejected the hypothesis that free-falling objects are intercepted using a predictive model of gravity. They argued instead for "a continuous guide for action timing" based on visual information updated till target capture. Here we show that their arguments are flawed, because they fail to consider the impact of sensori-motor delays on interception behaviour and the need for neural compensatio

"Critical periods" in vestibular development or adaptation of gravity sensory systems to altered gravitational conditions?

1. A feature of sensory, neuronal and motor systems is the existence of a critical period during their development. Modification of environmental conditions during this specific period of life affects development in a long-term manner, or even irreversibly. Deprivation is the prefered approach to study the existence and duration of critical periods. For gravity sensory systems, space flights offer the only opportunity for deprivation conditions. 2. Studies in a fish (Oreochromis mossambicus) and an amphibian (Xenopus laevis) revealed a significant sensitivity of their roll-induced static vesti

Explaining attractive and repulsive biases in the subjective visual vertical.

Perception of gravity can be assessed by measuring the subjective visual vertical (SVV), the visually indicated spatial direction that appears earth-vertical to an observer. When the SVV is assessed in darkness while the observer is roll-tilted, it shows substantial biases. At tilts larger than 45°, the bias is attractive, that is, the visual indicator appears vertical when rotated toward the observer. At smaller tilts, however, a repulsive bias is observed. The attractive bias has been explained within the Bayesian framework as the effect of a prior for upright posture. The repulsive bias has

Neuronal encoding of sound, gravity, and wind in the fruit fly.

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster responds behaviorally to sound, gravity, and wind. Exposure to male courtship songs results in reduced locomotion in females, whereas males begin to chase each other. When agitated, fruit flies tend to move against gravity. When faced with air currents, they 'freeze' in place. Based on recent studies, Johnston's hearing organ, the antennal ear of the fruit fly, serves as a sensor for all of these mechanosensory stimuli. Compartmentalization of sense cells in Johnston's organ into vibration-sensitive and deflection-sensitive neural groups allows this single

Head orientation of walking blowflies is controlled by visual and mechanical cues.

During locomotion, animals employ visual and mechanical cues in order to establish the orientation of their head, which reflects the orientation of the visual coordinate system. However, in certain situations, contradictory cues may suggest different orientations relative to the environment. We recorded blowflies walking on a horizontal or tilted surface surrounded by visual cues suggesting a variety of orientations. We found that the different orientations relative to gravity of visual cues and walking surface were integrated, with the orientation of the surface being the major contributor to

Plastic changes in processing of graviceptive signals during spaceflight potentially contribute to postflight orthostatic intolerance.

Immediately following spaceflight, many astronauts are unable to maintain adequate perfusion of the brain after assuming an upright posture; this condition is called post-spaceflight orthostatic intolerance (PSOI). Considerable evidence shows that inputs from otolith organs and other graviceptors play an important role in regulating blood pressure during changes in posture in a 1-g environment. However, reflexes elicited by graviceptors, presumably including those affecting the cardiovascular system, are attenuated during spaceflight. Thus, PSOI could be related to effects of microgravity on t

Asymmetry of vertical optokinetic nystagmus and afternystagmus.

The sensorimotor mechanism to stabilize the visual field in upright posture is not the same in earth-horizontal plane and vertical plane, because gravity possesses a directionality which is sensed by gravity-receptors. In this communication, asymmetric behavior of the vertical optokinetic nystagmus and afternystagmus is discussed, in conjunction with lesion placements within the peripheral and central neuro-networks (macula sacculi and cerebellar uvula and nodulus) in squirrel monkeys.

Plant tropisms: pH-guided saprotropism enables roots to avoid decay zones.

Plants use tropisms, directional growth responses, to navigate diverse environmental cues such as light, gravity, water, temperature and salinity. A recent study shows roots avoid microbial decay zones by sensing pH gradients generated by decomposition, uncovering a new tropism - saprotropism.

Unsupervised Noise Reductions for Gravitational Reference Sensors or Accelerometers Based on the Noise2Noise Method.

Onboard electrostatic suspension inertial sensors are important applications for gravity satellites and space gravitational-wave detection missions, and it is important to suppress noise in the measurement signal. Due to the complex coupling between the working space environment and the satellite platform, the process of noise generation is extremely complex, and traditional noise modeling and subtraction methods have certain limitations. With the development of deep learning, applying it to high-precision inertial sensors to improve the signal-to-noise ratio is a practically meaningful task.

Amyloplasts are necessary for full gravitropism in thallus of Marchantia polymorpha.

Gravitropism is a plant response to gravity that directs organ growth and development, playing a key role in the adaptation of land plants. While its molecular basis has been extensively studied in flowering plants, much less is known about this process in other plant lineages. Here, we investigated the gravitropic response of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, a model for early land plant evolution. In darkness, the thallus tips extended upward, forming several straight, narrow structures whose growth direction was consistently opposite to gravity and disrupted by clinostat treatment. These

The response of lazy-2 tomato seedlings to curvature-inducing magnetic gradients is modulated by light.

Shoots of the lazy-2 mutant of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cv. Ailsa Craig) exhibit negative gravitropism in the dark, but respond positively gravitropically in (red) light. In order to test whether high-gradient magnetic fields (HGMFs) exert only ponderomotive effects on amyloplasts or affect other physiological processes, we induced magnetophoretic curvature in wild-type (WT) and lazy-2 mutant seedlings. Straight hypocotyls of 4-d-old plants were selected and the tips of their hooks were placed in an HGMF near the edge of a magnetized ferromagnetic wedge [grad (H2/2) approximately

Subjective Vertical Conflict Theory and Space Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Space motion sickness (SMS) remains a troublesome problem during spaceflight. The subjective vertical (SV) conflict theory postulates that all motion sickness provoking situations are characterized by a condition in which the SV sensed from gravity and visual and idiotropic cues differs from the expected vertical. This theory has been successfully used to predict motion sickness in different vehicles on Earth. METHOD: We have summarized the most outstanding and recent studies on the illusions and characteristics associated with spatial disorientation and SMS during weightlessness,

Gravity and observer's body orientation influence the visual perception of human body postures.

Since human behavior and perception have evolved within the Earth's gravitational field, humans possess an internal model of gravity. Although gravity is known to influence the visual perception of moving objects, the evidence is less clear concerning the visual perception of static objects. We investigated whether a visual judgment of the stability of human body postures (static postures of a human standing on a platform and tilted in the roll plane) may also be influenced by gravity and by the participant's orientation. Pictures of human body postures were presented in different orientations
