Glial cell biology in the Great Lakes region.

We report on the tenth bi-annual Great Lakes Glial meeting, held in Traverse City, Michigan, USA, September 27-29 2015. The GLG meeting is a small conference that focuses on current research in glial cell biology. The array of functions that glial cells (astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocytes, Schwann cells) play in health and disease is constantly increasing. Despite this diversity, GLG meetings bring together scientists with common interests, leading to a better understanding of these cells. This year's meeting included two keynote speakers who presented talks on the regulation of CNS myeli

Assessment of mercury bioaccumulation within the pelagic food web of lakes in the western Great Lakes region.

While mercury is a health hazard to humans and wildlife, the biogeochemical processes responsible for its bioaccumulation in pelagic food webs are still being examined. Previous studies have indicated both "bottom-up" control of piscivorous fish Hg content through methylmercury.(MeHg) supply, as well as site-specific trophic factors. We evaluated ten studies from the western Great Lakes region to examine the similarity of MeHg trophic transfer efficiency within the pelagic food web, and assessed regional-scale spatial variability. Analyses of bioaccumulation and biomagnification factors betwee

Ecological risk of methylmercury to piscivorous fish of the Great Lakes region.

Contamination of fish populations with methylmercury is common in the region of the Laurentian Great Lakes as a result of atmospheric deposition and methylation of inorganic mercury. Using fish mercury monitoring data from natural resource agencies and information on tissue concentrations injurious to fish, we conducted a screening-level risk assessment of mercury to sexually mature female walleye (Sander vitreus), northern pike (Esox lucius), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in the Great Lakes and in interior lakes, impoundments, and rivers o

Dynamics of cholera outbreaks in Great Lakes region of Africa, 1978-2008.

Cholera outbreaks have occurred in Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya almost every year since 1977-1978, when the disease emerged in these countries. We used a multiscale, geographic information system-based approach to assess the link between cholera outbreaks, climate, and environmental variables. We performed time-series analyses and field investigations in the main affected areas. Results showed that cholera greatly increased during El Nino warm events (abnormally warm El Ninos) but decreased or remained stable between these events. Most epidemics oc

Human health research and policy development: experience in the Great Lakes region.

As a direct outgrowth of industrial and agricultural activities, the quality of the Great Lakes ecosystem has declined significantly because of toxic substances in the water, eutrophication, overfishing, and invasive species that have been introduced into the waterways. Although measures have been adopted to restore the health of the ecosystem, contamination of Great Lakes sport fish continues arising from conditions that still prevail, but on a more limited scale. As a consequence, the Great Lakes states have issued guidelines for the public in the form of health advisories for fish consumpti

Mistaken Identity: A Prevalence Study of Bromazolam in the American Great Lakes Region.

BACKGROUND: Bromazolam (BRZ) is a novel psychoactive substance benzodiazepine drug that has recently emerged within the illicit drug supply in the United States. BRZ is not FDA-approved and is distributed in drug mixtures or as counterfeit "Xanax". We explored the BRZ prevalence from oral fluid samples submitted to our lab for testing. METHODS: BRZ-positive sample results were examined between August 2024 and November 2025. Illicit drug and other benzodiazepine content, medication lists, and associated county data were also gathered to indicate prevalence, identify use trends, and map BRZ use

Spatial gradients of methylmercury for breeding common loons in the Laurentian Great Lakes region.

Much of the Laurentian Great Lakes region is a mercury-sensitive landscape, in which atmospheric deposition and waterborne sources of mercury (Hg) have led to high concentrations of bioavailable methylmercury (MeHg) in predatory fish and piscivorous wildlife. Efforts since the early 1990s have established the common loon (Gavia immer) as the primary avian indicator for evaluating the exposure and effects of MeHg in North America. A regional Hg dataset was compiled from multiple loon tissue types and yellow perch (Perca flavescens), a preferred prey fish species for loons. Hg exposure in loons

Endocrine disruption and altered gonadal development in white perch (Morone americana) from the lower Great Lakes region.

High prevalences of gonadal intersex have been observed in wild fish populations in areas affected by domestic and industrial effluents. For this study, fish were collected in 1998 from the Cootes Paradise region of Hamilton Harbour in western Lake Ontario, Canada, to determine whether gonadal abnormalities, including intersex, were present in young of the year (YOY) fish. No gonadal abnormalities were observed in goldfish (Carassius auratus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), brown bullhead (Ictalurus ameiurus), pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), and bluegill (Le

Emigration of silver eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) from the Great Masurian Lakes complex in the southeastern Baltic region.

Obstacles encountered by downstream migrating European eels during their spawning migration are among the primary causes of their population decline. River regulation and hydrotechnical infrastructure play a crucial role in this process. Fish reaching migration barriers often interrupt their journey, while those passing through hydroelectric turbines frequently suffer fatal injuries. Using acoustic telemetry, the downstream migration of silver eels from a large lake complex in northern Poland was tracked. Along their route, the fish encountered small hydropower plant (SHP) equipped with Kaplan

Pantoea coffeiphila sp. nov., cause of the 'potato taste' of Arabica coffee from the African Great Lakes region.

Six isolates recovered from coffee seeds giving off a potato-like flavour were studied. Gene sequencing (rrs and rpoB) showed they belong to the genus Pantoea. By DNA-DNA hybridization, the isolates constituted a genomic species with less than 17% relatedness to 96 strains representing enterobacterial species. Multilocus sequence analysis (gyrB, rpoB, atpD and infB genes) showed the isolates to represent a discrete species of the genus Pantoea. Nutritional versatility of the novel species was poor. The novel species is proposed as Pantoea coffeiphila sp.nov. and its type strain is Ca04(T) ( =C

Phylogeographic Genetic Diversity in the White Sucker Hepatitis B Virus across the Great Lakes Region and Alberta, Canada.

Hepatitis B viruses belong to a family of circular, double-stranded DNA viruses that infect a range of organisms, with host responses that vary from mild infection to chronic infection and cancer. The white sucker hepatitis B virus (WSHBV) was first described in the white sucker (Catostomus commersonii), a freshwater teleost, and belongs to the genus Parahepadnavirus. At present, the host range of WSHBV and its impact on fish health are unknown, and neither genetic diversity nor association with fish health have been studied in any parahepadnavirus. Given the relevance of genomic diversity to

Estimated exposure to mercury from fish consumption among women anglers of childbearing age in the Great Lakes region.

Women of childbearing age (WCBA) are advised by state, tribal, and federal agencies to limit their consumption of certain fish, in part, because of concerns about the ingestion of methylmercury and its impact on the development of fetuses. We studied the fish-eating habits of WCBA who had a fishing license and lived near the Great Lakes, where mercury in locally-caught fish is a concern, as these women were likely at greater risk of elevated mercury exposure than the general population. We used a web-based diary method to gather fish consumption data from WCBA anglers over a 4-month period in

PCBs, mercury, and organochlorine concentrations in lake trout, walleye, and whitefish from selected tribal fisheries in the Upper Great Lakes region.

The purpose of this study was to determine the concentrations of environmental contaminants in the edible portion of fish tissue consumed by Ojibwa residing in the Upper Great Lakes region. Lake trout, whitefish, and walleye were collected from Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and selected inland lakes. These fish were harvested by either commercial fishing or spearfishing techniques and analyzed for environmental contaminants. Samples were pooled by species and location of collection and were analyzed as composites. The concentrations of congener-specific polychlorinated biphenyl (PC

The interface between rare plant management and genetics: conserving Pitcher's thistle (Cirsium pitcheri) in the Great Lakes region, USA.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tools showing best conservation practices are becoming critical for rare plant conservation as populations become isolated through habitat fragmentation and changing ecosystem processes. We illustrate the importance of reintroduction and assisted gene flow, using reintroduction of the USA federally threatened Pitcher's thistle (Cirsium pitcheri), a monocarpic perennial endemic to the western Great Lakes sand dunes. We evaluate the success of experimental reintroductions of this species into its dynamic coastal environment and address fundamental issues for rare plant reint

Spatial and Seasonal Distributions of Current Use Pesticides (CUPs) in the Atmospheric Particulate Phase in the Great Lakes Region.

The authors analyzed spatial and seasonal variations of current use pesticides (CUPs) levels in the atmospheric particulate phase in the Great Lakes basin. Twenty-four hour air samples were collected at six sites (two urban, two rural, and two remote) in 2015. The concentrations of 15 CUPs, including nine pyrethroid insecticides, four herbicides, one organophosphate insecticide, and one fungicide, were measured. The total CUPs concentrations were higher at the urban sites (0.38-1760 pg/m3) than at the rural and remote sites (0.07-530 pg/m3). The most abundant CUPs were pyrethroid insecticides

Grounding water: Integrated methods for nature-based solutions in Great Lakes urban coastal regions.

Urban coastal regions in the Great Lakes Basin are increasingly vulnerable to destructive flooding driven by climate impacts, outdated gray infrastructure systems, and a legacy of urban hydrological alteration and habitat fragmentation. While Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer a path to adaptation, their implementation is often hindered by governance fragmentation, uneven regional resources, and a lack of integrated planning and design tools. This article discusses a transdisciplinary research through design framework that translates complex hydrological, ecological, and socio-spatial datasets
