Living with coeliac disease: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Coeliac disease can be controlled only through adherence to a gluten-free diet. This diet is highly restrictive and can be challenging to maintain. It has been linked with elevated levels of psychological distress, including depression, anxiety and social phobia. METHODS: Narratives on living with coeliac disease were written by 130 adult members of Coeliac UK (mean age 52.7 years; mean time since diagnosis 10.2 years; 67% sample female; 28% male). Qualitative analysis using grounded theory methods identified five key categories: living with widespread ignorance; social invisibili

Using grounded theory methods in educational research and evaluation.

This leading article focuses on the use of grounded theory as a research approach in educational research and evaluation. It seeks to clarify what is required for a submission to be seen as a grounded theory manuscript. The journal has received, in recent years, manuscripts that lack the necessary academic rigour, in particular in relation to the methods section. It is hoped this article will help to demystify grounded theory and provide guidance for authors planning their research and preparing their manuscript. Grounded theory has an extensive history reaching back to the 1960s with the work

A grounded theory of compassionate care among clinical nurses.

BackgroundCompassionate care is a core ethical obligation in nursing, yet the processes through which nurses enact and sustain it remain insufficiently theorized. Existing grounded theory models have not examined an East Asian care context in which nursing staff may assume both clinical and daily living care.Research question/aim/objectivesHow do clinical nurses experience, construct, and sustain compassionate care, and what ethical challenges shape this process?Research designA grounded theory design following Strauss and Corbin was employed. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using ope

Adolescents coping with mood disorder: a grounded theory study.

A grounded theory methodology was used to explore the phenomenon of coping as experienced by adolescents with a mood disorder. Mood disorders among children and adolescents are more persistent than previously thought and have numerous negative associated features, including further episodes of depression, impaired social, academic and vocational relationships, use of alcohol and other drugs, and an increased risk of suicide. Current literature offered little awareness of how adolescents cope with a mood disorder, as well as their perspective of how such an illness impacts their lives. A substa

Pathways to the therapist paragon: a decolonial grounded theory.

INTRODUCTION: While many professional associations within clinical and counseling psychology have made an aspirational call for clinician awareness of social position, there is a lack of research into how socially-conferred privilege impacts psychotherapy. Specifically of interest is the differences in race and gender within the therapeutic dyad, in which there is a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color)/white or male/female-identified dynamic. METHOD: The authors utilized a Grounded Theory approach to analyze qualitative interviews with practicing psychologists to construct a proces

Living well with chronic pain: a classical grounded theory.

Purpose: There is little theory to explain how and why some people cope well despite chronic pain. This study proposes a mid-level theoretical explanation for those that cope well, shedding light on factors relevant to acceptance.Method: Classical grounded theory methodology was closely followed to generate a theory grounded in data obtained from community-dwelling people self-identified as living well despite chronic pain. Results: The main concern of people experiencing chronic pain is resolving the problem of disrupted self-coherence. Resolution involves re-occupying self by (1) making sense

Undergoing head and neck cancer surgery: A grounded theory.

Surgery is the treatment of choice in most head and neck cancers. Very often, the surgery is radical with high impact on the psychosocial, functional and aesthetic fields. The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the patient's, clinician's and key informant's point of view when surgery is proposed, to improve the quality of pathways in terms of patients' practical, psychological and relational needs. We followed a Grounded Theory approach with semi-structured interviews. Seventeen participants (six patients, nine healthcare professionals and two volunteers) were interviewed i

Being "just normal": a grounded theory of prosthesis use.

PURPOSE: Whilst research tells us about the benefits and challenges of using prostheses, little attempt has been made to account for and provide explanations for the differing experiences of prosthesis users. In this study, a core concern shared by prosthesis users and an account of how this concern is managed are explored. METHOD: Data were collected and analysed according to Grounded Theory procedures, involving interviews with 24 participants, 17 weblogs, 17 autobiographical texts, and posts from 4 online forums. RESULTS: Prosthesis users are primarily concerned with being "just normal":

A grounded theory of youth athlete concussion under-reporting decisions.

BACKGROUND: Sport-related concussions leave youth vulnerable to significant health, physical, social, and educational disruptions. Many youth athletes under-report concussions, but the scope of the issue for this population is not well understood, nor are the underlying motivations for (under)reporting. It is necessary to examine the relationship between sport-related concussion knowledge and reporting and invite athletes to share their decision-making processes. The purpose of the research was to understand how athletes' attitudes, experiences and beliefs regarding concussions influence their

Participants' views of telephone interviews within a grounded theory study.

AIM: To offer a unique contribution to the evolving debate around the use of the telephone during semistructured interview by drawing on interviewees' reflections on telephone interview during a grounded theory study. BACKGROUND: The accepted norm for qualitative interviews is to conduct them face-to-face. It is typical to consider collecting qualitative data via telephone only when face-to-face interview is not possible. During a grounded theory study, exploring users' experiences with overnight mask ventilation for sleep apnoea, the authors selected the telephone to conduct interviews. This

Gambler Risk Perception: A Mental Model and Grounded Theory Analysis.

Few studies have investigated how gamblers perceive risk or the role of risk perception in disordered gambling. The purpose of the current study therefore was to obtain data on lay gamblers' beliefs on these variables and their effects on decision-making, behaviour, and disordered gambling aetiology. Fifteen regular lay gamblers (non-problem/low risk, moderate risk and problem gamblers) completed a semi-structured interview following mental models and grounded theory methodologies. Gambler interview data was compared to an expert 'map' of risk-perception, to identify comparative gaps or differ

Stigma in abortion care: application to a grounded theory study.

A recent research study found that being more directly involved in medical abortion places greater demands on the nurses. The demands required by nurses working in abortion care may be increased by the stigma attached to such an antisocial action. This paper presents an application of stigma theory, as espoused by Goffman, based on a qualitative research study on abortion. It is argued that women attending for abortion are stigmatised and nurses, although 'wise', have an affiliate stigma through their close association with the procedure. It is proposed that the situation can be ameliorated by
