Evaluation of groundwater flow patterns around a dual-screened groundwater circulation well.

Dual-screened groundwater circulation wells (GCWs) can be used to remove contaminant mass and to mix reagents in situ. GCWs are so named because they force water in a circular pattern between injection and extraction screens. The radial extent, flux and direction of the effective flow of this circulation cell are difficult to measure or predict. The objective of this study is to develop a robust protocol for assessing GCW performance. To accomplish this, groundwater flow patterns surrounding a GCW are assessed using a suite of tools and data, including: hydraulic head, in situ flow velocity, m

Groundwater-surface water interaction and its role on TCE groundwater plume attenuation.

A field investigation of a TCE plume in a surficial sand aquifer shows that groundwater-surface water interactions strongly influence apparent plume attenuation. At the site, a former industrial facility in Connecticut, depth-discrete monitoring along three cross-sections (transects) perpendicular to groundwater flow shows a persistent VOC plume extending 700 m from the DNAPL source zone to a mid-size river. Maximum TCE concentrations along a transect 280 m from the source were in the 1000s of microg/L with minimal degradation products. Beyond this, the land surface drops abruptly to a lower t

Groundwater quality in Scotland: major ion chemistry of the key groundwater bodies.

Groundwater in Scotland is, for the most part, weakly to moderately mineralised and dominated by the Ca and HCO3 ions. The aquifer systems are almost entirely unconfined and most groundwater remains in contact with oxygen; some reducing groundwaters occur in deeper isolated cracks and joints within the many fractured bedrock aquifers such as Devonian sandstones. Groundwater depleted in oxygen is also common in the Coal Measures in the Midland Valley as a direct result of past coal and oil shale mining, when iron and other metals are taken into solution as the abandoned mine workings are allowe

Metagenomic Analysis of Rural Groundwater Viromes Reveals Bacteriophage Contributions to Groundwater Microbial Ecology.

Groundwater ecosystems host diverse microbial communities, yet the diversity and ecological roles of their associated viral genomes remain poorly characterized. Here, we investigated viral community composition, diversity, host associations, lifestyles, and auxiliary metabolic potential in groundwater from three hand pumps located in Toukh, Qalyubia, Egypt, representing distinct local surroundings and potential contamination pressures. Using complementary viral detection approaches and a quality assessment workflow, we recovered 9,534 non-redundant viral contigs spanning a wide range of viral

Bimetallic nickel-iron nanoparticles for groundwater decontamination: effect of groundwater constituents on surface deactivation.

The incorporation of catalytic metals on iron nanoparticles to form bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) generates a class of highly reactive materials for degrading chlorinated hydrocarbons (e.g., trichloroethylene, TCE) in groundwater. Successful implementation of BNPs to groundwater decontamination relies critically on the stability of surface reactive sites of BNPs in groundwater matrices. This study investigated the effect of common groundwater solutes on TCE reduction with Ni-Fe (with Ni at 2 wt.%) bimetallic nanoparticles (herein denoted as Ni-Fe BNPs). Batch experiments involving pre-exposi

Environmental Groundwater Depth for Groundwater-Dependent Terrestrial Ecosystems in Arid/Semiarid Regions: A Review.

Groundwater in arid/semiarid regions plays crucial roles in providing drinking water supply, supporting irrigated agriculture, and sustaining important native terrestrial ecosystems. Groundwater depth controls water availability to vegetation and is essential for conserving groundwater-dependent terrestrial ecosystems. Environmental groundwater depth can be defined as a mean depth or a range of depths, satisfying the growth of natural vegetation that is not under stress, either due to lack of water or anoxia or soil salinization. Five methodologies have been reported to estimate environmental

Quantify the effects of groundwater level recovery on groundwater nitrate dynamics through a quasi-3D integrated model for the vadose zone-groundwater coupled system.

Groundwater level (GWL) recovery in some semiarid regions, attributed to mitigation countermeasures for groundwater depletion, potentially causes nitrate accumulated in the vadose zone to be introduced into the aquifer. However, the extent to which GWL recovery affects interactions between the vadose zone and saturated aquifers, migration pathways of soil nitrogen and groundwater nitrate dynamics have not been explicitly determined. This study established a quasi-3D feedback model for the vadose zone-groundwater coupled system in a typical GWL recovery area and quantitatively evaluated the eff

Threshold analysis of rainfall and groundwater recharge in mitigating drought risks in overexploited groundwater regions.

This study examines how rainfall and groundwater recharge can help mitigate drought conditions, using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) as the drought indicator. It focuses on the top ten countries experiencing groundwater overexploitation and incorporates a global average perspective to provide deeper insights into these critical relationships. These insights are essential for informed policy-making and integrated decision-making, involving a range of stakeholders from local users to international policymakers on drought mitigation efforts from 1961 to 2022. Quality of groundwater resources in Afghanistan.

Water is the main source of energy production and economy in Afghanistan where agriculture accounts for more than 50% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). Access to safe drinking water is still a problem in the country, which has caused different health issues and even child mortality especially in rural areas. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water in the country. However, little knowledge is available about the quality of groundwater throughout the entire country, and its quality has not been investigated extensively yet like in other countries in the world. While most pe

Remediation of COD-Contaminated Groundwater by Coupled Electro-Fenton and Groundwater Circulation Well: An Experimental Study.

Groundwater circulation well (GCW) technology and electro-Fenton (EF) technology offer promising prospects for groundwater remediation due to their high efficiency in removing volatile organic compounds and their advantage of causing no secondary pollution. In this study, chemical oxygen demand (COD) was selected as the target contaminant to investigate the remediation performance of the EF coupled with GCW technology. The results indicate that the optimal COD removal was achieved at an applied voltage of 30 V, as higher voltages facilitate the accelerated generation of ·OH radicals, thereby e

Global groundwater contamination by geogenic fluoride.

Fluoride (F¯) is a global geogenic contaminant in groundwater, occurring at elevated concentrations across almost every continent. While optimal fluoride intake benefits dental health, levels exceeding the WHO safe limit (1.5 mg L-1) can cause dental fluorosis and even severe skeletal fluorosis, with drinking water being the primary exposure pathway. Understanding the global occurrence and geochemistry of fluoride in groundwater is essential for minimizing associated health risks. Therefore, this study reviews the incidence, distribution, mobilization mechanisms of fluoride in groundwater, and

Phosphorus limitation in nitrifying groundwater filters.

Phosphorus limitation has been demonstrated for heterotrophic growth in groundwater, in drinking water production and distribution systems, and for nitrification of surface water treatment at low temperatures. In this study, phosphorus limitation was tested, in the Netherlands, for nitrification of anaerobic groundwater rich in iron, ammonium and orthophosphate. The bioassay method developed by Lehtola et al. (1999) was adapted to determine the microbially available phosphorus (MAP) for nitrification. In standardized batch experiments with an enriched mixed culture inoculum, the formation of n

Surface-water-irrigation return flow dominates groundwater recharge, groundwater age and nitrate dynamics in an alluvial basin aquifer.

In agricultural regions where crop water demand is met by surface-water irrigation, excess irrigation water can play a fundamental role in aquifer recharge and contaminant mobilization. Despite much research, the role of surface-water-irrigation return flow in groundwater recharge, flow processes and nitrate pollution is not yet fully understood. It is therefore addressed here using the case of the Po Plain in northern Italy. Tracers of groundwater recharge (stable isotopes in water and Cl/Br ratio), age tracers (CFCs, SF6, 3H-3He, noble gases) and long-term average nitrate concentrations meas

Spatial patterns, geochemical evolution and quality of groundwater in Delta State, Niger Delta, Nigeria: implication for groundwater management.

Delta State of the Niger Delta, Nigeria, is an oil exploration and production region that is characterized by huge revenue generation but with its attendant waste generation and oil spillage that impact the environment. The variability in the hydrochemical characteristics, hydrochemical controlling processes and quality in space has been investigated. The pH of the groundwater samples ranged from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline nature. Biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand of the coastal area are higher than those of the inland area indicating more domestic and industrial co

Groundwater is a hidden global keystone ecosystem.

Groundwater is a vital ecosystem of the global water cycle, hosting unique biodiversity and providing essential services to societies. Despite being the largest unfrozen freshwater resource, in a period of depletion by extraction and pollution, groundwater environments have been repeatedly overlooked in global biodiversity conservation agendas. Disregarding the importance of groundwater as an ecosystem ignores its critical role in preserving surface biomes. To foster timely global conservation of groundwater, we propose elevating the concept of keystone species into the realm of ecosystems, cl

Earthquakes trigger the loss of groundwater biodiversity.

Earthquakes are among the most destructive natural events. The 6 April 2009, 6.3-Mw earthquake in L'Aquila (Italy) markedly altered the karstic Gran Sasso Aquifer (GSA) hydrogeology and geochemistry. The GSA groundwater invertebrate community is mainly comprised of small-bodied, colourless, blind microcrustaceans. We compared abiotic and biotic data from two pre-earthquake and one post-earthquake complete but non-contiguous hydrological years to investigate the effects of the 2009 earthquake on the dominant copepod component of the obligate groundwater fauna. Our results suggest that the massi

Dataset on the global distribution of shallow groundwater.

Shallow groundwater (GW), defined as the water table of unconfined or perched aquifers that is near enough to the land surface to influence the vadose zone and the surface soil moisture, impacts land surface water, energy, and carbon cycles by providing additional moisture to the root zone via capillary fluxes. Although the interactions of shallow GW and the terrestrial land surface are widely recognized, incorporating shallow GW into the land surface, climate, and agroecosystem models is not yet possible due to the lack of groundwater data. Groundwater systems are affected by various factors,

Global analysis and prediction of fluoride in groundwater.

The health of millions of people worldwide is negatively impacted by chronic exposure to elevated concentrations of geogenic fluoride in groundwater. Due to health effects including dental mottling and skeletal fluorosis, the World Health Organization maintains a maximum guideline of 1.5 mg/L in drinking water. As groundwater quality is not regularly tested in many areas, it is often unknown if the water in a given well or spring contains harmful levels of fluoride. Here we present a state-of-the-art global fluoride hazard map based on machine learning and over 400,000 fluoride measurements (1
