Group dynamics challenges: Insights from Biosphere 2 experiments.

Successfully managing group dynamics of small, physically isolated groups is vital for long duration space exploration/habitation and for terrestrial CELSS (Controlled Environmental Life Support System) facilities with human participants. Biosphere 2 had important differences and shares some key commonalities with both Antarctic and space environments. There were a multitude of stress factors during the first two year closure experiment as well as mitigating factors. A helpful tool used at Biosphere 2 was the work of W.R. Bion who identified two competing modalities of behavior in small groups

Dynamics of a smile in different age groups.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate smile in different age groups and to detect gender differences in smile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Digital videographic records of 241 randomly selected subjects were obtained for smile analysis. The subjects were divided into four groups by age (15-20 years, 21-30 years, 31-40 years, and 41-50 years). Each group was further subdivided by gender. After 41 subjects were excluded, the smile dimensions of 200 subjects were analyzed by two-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with Duncan's multiple range post hoc test. RESULTS: All dynamic measurements (change in up

Group dynamic-relational therapy for perfectionism.

The interest in treating underlying core vulnerability factors or transdiagnostic processes has been a focus of much attention. In this paper we describe our application of group dynamic-relational psychotherapy to the treatment of perfectionism, a core personality vulnerability factor associated with various forms and types of dysfunction and disorders that have profound costs to the individual both socially and subjectively. Over the course of the past three decades, we developed an evidence-based integrative group treatment that targets the psychodynamic and relational underpinnings of perf

Mind-wandering dynamics during individual vs. group mindfulness meditation.

INTRODUCTION: Although meditation practice encompasses both intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions, the differential effects of individual versus group meditation settings (IS vs. GS) remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to reduce this gap by comparing the effects of a mindfulness meditation session performed in the two settings, focusing in particular on mind-wandering (MW) dynamics. METHODS: Expert meditators (n = 30) performed two 30-min breath-focused mindfulness meditation sessions, one in IS and one in GS. During the meditations, participants reported the occurrence of MW via

Diet influences community dynamics following vaginal group B streptococcus colonization.

The vaginal microbiota plays a pivotal role in reproductive, sexual, and perinatal health and disease. Unlike the well-established connections between diet, metabolism, and the intestinal microbiota, parallel mechanisms influencing the vaginal microbiota and pathogen colonization remain overlooked. In this study, we combine a mouse model of Streptococcus agalactiae strain COH1 [group B Streptococcus (GBS)] vaginal colonization with a mouse model of pubertal-onset obesity to assess diet as a determinant of vaginal microbiota composition and its role in colonization resistance. We leveraged cult

Challenging gender stereotypes: Theory of mind and peer group dynamics.

To investigate the social cognitive skills related to challenging gender stereotypes, children (N = 61, 3-6 years) evaluated a peer who challenged gender stereotypic norms held by the peer's group. Participants with false belief theory of mind (FB ToM) competence were more likely than participants who did not have FB ToM to expect a peer to challenge the group's stereotypes and propose that the group engage in a non-stereotypic activity. Further, participants with FB ToM rated challenging the peer group more positively. Participants without FB ToM did not differentiate between their own and th

Group size modulates kinship dynamics and selection on social traits.

An individual's relatedness to its group may change with age due to demographic processes, and such kinship dynamics can shape age-linked social behaviors. Existing models, however, have focused almost exclusively on dispersal and mating, leaving the consequences of group size local variation unexplored. Here, we extend these models to incorporate such variation within a single, genetically connected meta-population. We then contrast predicted kinship dynamics and age-linked selection for helping/harming in coexisting smaller and larger groups in three typical social mammal systems characteriz

[The Group as Care: Group Dynamics and Functions in Adventure Therapy for Young Adults with Psychosis].

Ojectives The repercussions of a first episode psychosis (FEP) can be very trying for people suffering from it and those around them. The recovery process remains laborious and some people have difficulty engaging in it. Understanding better the effects of group intervention on people suffering from so-called negative symptoms or on those more resistant to usual treatments appears necessary. Adventure therapy stands out among group interventions for its outdoor activities, in a natural setting, aimed at behavioral changes. This study aims to better understand emerging group phenomena, as well

Probabilistic dynamics of small groups in crowd flows.

Pedestrians in crowds frequently move as part of small groups, which can constitute up to 70% of individuals in public spaces. Dyads (groups of two) are most frequent. Understanding quantitatively the dynamics of dyads walking in crowds is therefore an essential building block towards a fundamental comprehension of the crowd behavior as a whole, and is mandatory for accurate crowd dynamics models. Unavoidably, due to the non-deterministic behavior of pedestrians, characterizations of the dynamics must be probabilistic. In this work, we analyse the dynamics of over 6 M dyads: a statistical ense

Beyond 'vulnerable groups': contexts and dynamics of vulnerability.

This paper reviews approaches to vulnerability in public health, introducing a series of 10 papers addressing vulnerability in health in Africa. We understand vulnerability as simultaneously a condition and a process. Social inequalities are manifest in and exacerbate three key dimensions of vulnerability: the initial level of wellbeing, the degree of exposure to risk, and the capacity to manage risk effectively. We stress the dynamic interactions linking material and social deprivation, poverty, powerlessness and ill health: risks or shocks and their health impacts are intimately interconnect

Three applications of functional analysis with group dynamic cognitive behavioral group therapy.

Case illustrations from group dynamic cognitive behavioral group therapy are presented to demonstrate three applications of functional analysis and the resulting cognitive behavioral interventions. The principles of group dynamic cognitive behavioral group therapy are explained. A functional analysis is applied first to the problem behavior of an individual group member. A clinical case illustrates how the group members help to change this individual group member's behavior from a learning theory perspective. Next, the circular interactional problem behavior between two group members is reduce

Investigating Conformational Dynamics of Lewis Y Oligosaccharides and Elucidating Blood Group Dependency of Cholera Using Molecular Dynamics.

Cholera is caused by Vibrio cholerae and is an example of a blood-group-dependent disease. Recent studies suggest that the receptor-binding B subunit of the cholera toxin (CT) binds histo-blood group antigens at a secondary binding site. Herein, we studied the conformational dynamics of Lewis Y (LeY) oligosaccharides, H-tetrasaccharides and A-pentasaccharides, in aqueous solution by conducting accelerated molecular dynamics (aMD) simulations. The flexible nature of both oligosaccharides was displayed in aMD simulations. Furthermore, aMD simulations revealed that for both oligosaccharides in th

Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Infection and Transmission Dynamics in Amblyomma maculatum.

Tick vectors are capable of transmitting several rickettsial species to vertebrate hosts, resulting in various levels of disease. Studies have demonstrated the transmissibility of both rickettsial pathogens and novel Rickettsia species or strains with unknown pathogenicity to vertebrate hosts during tick blood meal acquisition; however, the quantitative nature of transmission remains unknown. We tested the hypothesis that if infection severity is a function of the rickettsial load delivered during tick transmission, then a more virulent spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia species is transmitt

Social bonds and helping dynamics promote cooperation in nested group populations.

Most studies on the evolution of cooperation focus on single-group settings, whereas real-world interactions often occur within nested group structures and are shaped by pre-existing social relationships. The coexistence of cross-level public-goods allocation, dynamically evolving social bonds, and heterogeneous helping responses creates multiple feedback channels, making the stability of cooperation dependent on both group structure and relationship dynamics. To address these limitations, this study develops a two-stage game model that incorporates social bonds to characterize relationship st

[The dynamics of detecting group-A streptococci in an infectious disease clinic].

The study revealed that the isolation rate of group A streptococci in scarlet fever patients at the time of hospitalization did not exceed 68%. The isolation rate of these streptococci was greatly influenced by antibacterial therapy carried out before hospitalization. Under clinical conditions with intensive penicillin therapy group A streptococci were eliminated from the larynx on days 3-4. In 13% of children repeated streptococcal infection was observed 0.5-3 months after discharge from hospital.

Enhancing physiology learning through group dynamics: outcomes and perceptions of medical students.

BACKGROUND: In health sciences education, active learning strategies are increasingly recognized for their role in enhancing student engagement and competency development. This study explores the impact of a structured group dynamics activity, framed within a desert survival scenario, on decision-making, teamwork, and academic performance among second-year medical students studying renal physiology. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was used involving 195 students, 140 of whom participated in a two-session collaborative activity grounded in physiological knowledge. The intervention emphasized i

Dynamic simulation of orientational disorder in organic crystals: methyl groups, trifluoromethyl groups and whole molecules.

Large amplitude librations of atomic groups or of entire molecules in their crystals are simulated using optimized intermolecular potentials and crystal structures deposited in the Cambridge Structural Database. The analysis proceeds by a simple static model in which reorientations take place in a fixed environment, or by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of equilibria dotted by rotational defects, or eventually by full Molecular Dynamics (MD). The simplest approach provides a valuable qualitative preview, but MC and MD are becoming easily accessible to the general solid-state chemist thanks to the

Spatiotemporal dynamics of equine group formation reveal the gradual emergence of social cohesion.

Stable social relationships are essential for horse welfare, yet domestic management often involves regrouping unfamiliar individuals, potentially causing social stress. Fine-scale dynamics of social integration remain poorly quantified due to limitations of observational sampling. Using ultra-wideband real-time positioning, we tracked the development of spatial and social relationships in two newly formed equine groups (n = 19) over 2-12 months. Inter-individual distances decreased significantly, with time spent within 3 m of conspecifics increasing from 1.2 to 27.3% within two months, demons
