The ability to recognize abnormal growth at birth and/or an intrauterine malnutrition is of great importance for neonatal care and prognosis. The current gold standard in neonatal auxological evaluation is based on information obtained from both neonatal anthropometric charts and intrauterine growth charts. Numerous charts have been proposed, but they are hardly comparable with each other, due to numerous methodological problems. The Italian Society of Neonatology, the Italian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology and the Italian Society of Medical Statistics and Clinical Epidemio

Intrauterine growth restriction indicates that a fetus is unable to achieve its growth potential. The individual growth potential is approximated by customization of growth charts. Neonatal growth charts rely on body weight measures at birth while fetal growth charts rely on body weight estimated from biometric measurements of the fetus. The neonatal and fetal growth charts are not equivalent and have different meanings for epidemiologists and clinicians. Fetal growth charts also assess fetal growth velocity, but individual assessment of fetal weight may be flawed by lack of precision. Neonata

Distance standards of height (growth charts) tend to get out of date and must be actualized from time to time. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to investigate characteristics of the cross sectional incremental pattern of body stature, evaluating the possibility of generating distance standards of height without the need for extensive de novo measurements. In view of the differences in growth in early and late childhood, we divided the total period of child development into the period between birth and the age of 6y, and between 6 and early adulthood (15y in females, 18 y in males). Charts for fetal growth do not take physiological variables into account. We have therefore designed a computer-generated antenatal chart that can be easily "customised" for each individual pregnancy, taking the mother's characteristics and birthweights from previous pregnancies into consideration. The adjusted birthweight range expected at 40 weeks' gestation is combined with a standard, longitudinal ultrasound-derived curve for intrauterine weight gain. Review at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, UK, of 4179 pregnancies with ultrasound-confirmed dates showed that, in addition to gestat

Growth abnormalities such as macrocephaly and short stature have been described and are considered a consistent finding in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), one of the most common autosomal dominant disorders in man. We present here a clinical study on the growth profile of a sample of NF1 patients collected through a population-based registry that covers three contiguous regions of North-East Italy (NEI-NF Registry). Auxometric traits of 528 NF1 patients have been measured with the aim of drawing growth charts for height, weight, and head circumference (OFC). Height velocity charts were based o

DYRK1A Syndrome (OMIM #614104) is caused by pathogenic variations in the DYRK1A gene located on 21q22. Haploinsufficiency of DYRK1A causes a syndrome with global psychomotor delay and intellectual disability. Low birth weight, growth restriction with feeding difficulties, stature insufficiency, and microcephaly are frequently reported. This study aims to create specific growth charts for individuals with DYRK1A Syndrome and identify parameters for size prognosis. Growth parameters were obtained for 92 individuals with DYRK1A Syndrome (49 males vs. 43 females). The data were obtained from pedia

BACKGROUND: Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS; OMIM #235730) is a genetic condition caused by heterozygous mutations or deletions of the ZEB2 gene. It is characterized by moderate-severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, Hirschsprung disease and multiple organ malformations of which congenital heart defects and urogenital anomalies are the most frequent ones. To date, a clear description of the physical development of MWS patients does not exist. The aim of this study is to provide up-to-date growth charts specific for infants and children with MWS. Charts for males and females aged from 0 to 16 yea

OBJECTIVES: This report presents the revised growth charts for the United States. It summarizes the history of the 1977 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) growth charts, reasons for the revision, data sources and statistical procedures used, and major features of the revised charts.
METHODS: Data from five national health examination surveys collected from 1963 to 1994 and five supplementary data sources were combined to establish an analytic growth chart data set. A variety of statistical procedures were used to produce smoothed percentile curves for infants (from birth to 36 month

OBJECTIVES: Proper infant classification, particularly a preterm infant, as small or large for gestational age, is crucial to undertake activities to improve postnatal outcomes. This study aimed to assess the usability of the Fenton preterm growth charts to evaluate the anthropometric parameters of Polish preterm neonates.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this single-center, retrospective study data extracted from the medical documentation of preterm neonates born 2002-2013 were analyzed. Body weight, body length, and head circumference were evaluated and used to develop growth charts, which were com

OBJECTIVES: While growth charts depicting 7 percentile lines for height and weight are useful for healthcare workers and pediatricians, endocrinologists need indication-specific z score cutoffs to plan investigations and treatment. The current Indian charts do not offer lower percentile/z scores (-2.25, -2.5, and -3 z score) lines. Also, increasing prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity necessitates a quick screening of nutritional status without calculations while using the same growth chart. Our objectives were to produce extended and user-friendly growth charts for 0-18-year-old Ind

The purpose of this work was to create growth curves specific to the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. Growth parameters on 188 patients (86 females, 102 males) followed by a group of three dysmorphologists were collected by retrospective chart review. Growth charts for body mass, length/height, and head circumference were generated using a semi-parametric model with goodness-of-fit tests. The resulting charts show that between 25 and 50% of children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome fall below the 2nd centile for the normal population for all growth parameters. Establishing norms of growth for 22q11.2

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The 2000 CDC growth charts for the United States, a revision of the National Center for Health Statistics/World Health Organization (NCHS/WHO) growth charts, were released in 2002 to replace the NCHS/WHO charts. We evaluated the differences between the CDC growth charts and the Saudi 2005 reference to determine the implications of using the 2000 CDC growth charts in Saudi children and adolescents.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The Saudi reference was based on a cross-sectional representative sample of the Saudi population of healthy children and adolescents from birth to 19

Hypochondroplasia (HCH) is a rare skeletal dysplasia causing mild short stature. There is a paucity of growth reference charts for this population. Anthropometric data were collected to generate height, weight, and head circumference (HC) growth reference charts for children with a diagnosis of HCH. Mixed longitudinal anthropometric data and genetic analysis results were collected from 14 European specialized skeletal dysplasia centers. Growth charts were generated using Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape. Measurements for height (983), weight (896), and HC (389) were c

Achondroplasia is an autosomal dominant disorder, the most common genetic cause of short stature in humans. Reference curves for head circumference, weight, height, and BMI are needed in clinical practice but none exist for the Australian population. This study aimed to produce head circumference, height, weight, and BMI reference percentile curves for Australian children and adolescents with achondroplasia. Measurements of head circumference, height and weight taken at clinical visits were retrospectively extracted from the electronic medical record. Age was corrected for prematurity. Patient

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth standards (prescriptive charts derived from low-risk pregnancies) are theoretically better tools to monitor fetal growth than conventional references. We examined how modifying chart inclusion criteria influenced the resulting curves.
METHODS: We summarized estimated fetal weight (EFW) distributions from a hospital's routine 32-week ultrasound in all nonanomalous singleton fetuses (reference) and in those without maternal-fetal conditions affecting fetal growth (standard). We calculated EFWs for the 3rd, 5th, 10th, and 50th percentiles, and the proportion of fetuses e

Appropriate standards for the assessment of fetal growth and birthweight are central to good clinical care, and have become even more important with increasing evidence that growth-related adverse outcomes are potentially avoidable. Standards need to be evidence based and validated against pregnancy outcome and able to demonstrate utility and effectiveness. A review of proposals by the Intergrowth consortium to adopt their single international standard finds little support for the claim that the cases that it identifies as small are due to malnutrition or stunting, and substantial evidence tha
