BACKGROUND: Conventional treatment of destructive periodontal (gum) disease arrests the disease but does not regain the bone support or connective tissue lost in the disease process. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a surgical procedure that aims to regenerate the periodontal tissues when the disease is advanced and could overcome some of the limitations of conventional therapy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of GTR in the treatment of periodontal infra-bony defects measured against the current standard of surgical periodontal treatment, open flap debridement.

One advanced localized periodontal lesion in each of 10 patients was treated using the guided tissue regeneration procedure. Six weeks after placement of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes, microbial samples were taken from each treated site and the membranes were removed. Six weeks later the cases were re-evaluated. They had all healed successfully with varying amounts of gain of clinical attachment. Gram-negative, anaerobic rods were found in all samples and made up 31% of all organisms cultivated. In 1 patient, Porphyromonas gingivalis was found in a proportion of 17.5%. Six

Periodontitis is a chronic infectious oral disease with a high prevalence rate in the world, and is a major cause of tooth loss. Nowadays, people have realized that the local microenvironment that includes proteins, cytokines, and extracellular matrix has a key influence on the functions of host immune cells and periodontal ligament (PDL) stem cells during a chronic infectious disease such as periodontitis. The above pathological process of periodontitis will lead to a defect of periodontal tissues. Through the application of biomaterials, biological agents, and stem cell therapy, guided tissu

Gingival recession is an apical displacement of the gingival margin and involves loss of connective tissue attachment and the supporting alveolar bone. Various treatment modalities have been utilized in the treatment of gingival recession in order to eliminate etiologic factors, achieve root coverage, regenerate the lost periodontal attachment, and prevent perpetuation of the disease. During the past two decades, the broad concept of guided tissue regeneration has become specific, identifying the specific treatment involved as guided bone regeneration and guided periodontal tissue regeneration

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and guided bone regeneration (GBR) are two common dental regenerative procedures used to repair periodontal defects caused by periodontitis. In both procedures, a barrier membrane is placed at the interface between the soft tissue and the periodontal defect, serving to impede the infiltration of soft tissue while creating a secluded space for periodontal regeneration. Recently, barrier membranes based on chitosan (CS) have emerged as a promising avenue for these applications. However, despite numerous studies on the development of CS-based membranes, comprehens

Clinical healing following guided tissue regeneration (GTR) in deep intrabony pockets was compared to healing following gingival flap surgery alone (GFS). 15 patients received the GTR treatment including an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane. 13 other patients received the control treatment GFS. A postsurgery protocol emphasizing wound stability and infection control was used. Treatment effects were evaluated 6 months postsurgery. Mean pre-surgery probing depth for the GTR and control treatments was 7.5 +/- 1.0 and 7.7 +/- 1.5 mm, respectively. Significant probing depth reduction (3.8 +

BACKGROUND: Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) barrier membranes have been widely used for guided tissue regeneration (GTR) of the human periodontal ligament (PL). However, the precise cellular and molecular events involved in the re-growth of the new tissue are still unclear.
METHODS: Retrieved membranes and the newly-regenerated soft tissue (RT) underlying the membranes were used to examine the cells associated with GTR compared with normal human PL and gingival cells. Flow cytometry (FCM) was used, for the first time, to analyze the spindle-shaped fibroblast-like cells which were adh

OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the evidence for efficacy of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) for infrabony defects.
BACKGROUND: The evidence for the efficacy of GTR has not yet been systematically appraised.
METHODS: We searched for randomised controlled trials of at least 12 months' follow-up comparing GTR with open flap debridement (OFD). Data sources included electronic databases, hand-searched journals and contact with experts. Screening, data abstraction and quality assessment were conducted independently by multiple reviewers. The primary outcome measure was gain in clinical atta

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use of 3 types of biodegradable, high molecular weight DL-lactic acid (PLA) membranes containing respectively 0%, 10%, and 30% low molecular weight oligomers for obtaining guided tissue regeneration following treatment of experimental buccal periodontal defects created surgically in 6 young adult beagle dogs. On the buccal aspects of test and control teeth, a mucoperiostal flap was raised and the buccal alveolar bone removed. The exposed root surfaces were scaled and a notch was prepared in the root surface at the level of the reduced crest. PLA

UNLABELLED: The therapy of deep infrabony defects in periodontal diseases has been a great problem for decades both for dentists and their patients, as well. After application of classic therapy in patients with serious stages of periodontal diseases (subgingival curettage, Modified Widmann flap surgery with and without implantation of implants) a significant strengthening of teeth in alveolus was observed, as well as alleviation of patient's discomfort, and decrease of the depth of periodontal pockets, bleeding, inflammation, etc. However, in spite of the application of this therapy a postope

The aim of the present study was to compare guided tissue regeneration with conventional surgery in matched periodontal defects within the same subject. Twenty pairs of sites in nine subjects were treated. Surgery was performed at both test and control sites on the same visit. Random allocation was not performed until all preparation and root instrumentation had been completed. Test defects were covered with e-PTFE membranes (Gore-Tex) and secured with sutures. Membranes were removed after 5-6 weeks with a second surgical procedure, whereas the control sites were not re-operated. At 12 months

Grade II furcation defects pose a significant therapeutic challenge in periodontology due to their complex anatomy and limited accessibility for effective regeneration. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the efficacy of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) using a bioresorbable collagen membrane compared to open flap debridement (OFD) alone in 48 patients with mandibular molar Grade II furcation defects. Clinical parameters (probing depth, clinical attachment level, horizontal probing depth and gingival recession) and radiographic bone fill were assessed at baseline and 6 months postoperativ

BACKGROUND: Infection after a periodontal surgical site has been prepared for guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is one of the common complications that can compromise healing. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of repeated local antimicrobial therapy following GTR for improving clinical attachment gains, and to histologically evaluate the various cell populations and bacterial contamination of the retrieved expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (ePTFE).
METHODS: Forty periodontal intrabony defects in 40 patients were treated by a flap procedure that included the use of ePTF

The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical results of guided periodontal tissue regeneration (GPTR) using a resorbable barrier manufactured from a copolymer of polylactic and polyglycolic acids (Resolut Regenerative Material) with those of non-resorbable e-PTFE barrier (Gore-Tex Periodontal Material). 12 subjects participated, 6 with similarly paired class II furcations and 6 with 2 similar 2, 3-wall periodontal lesions. The resorbable and non-resorbable barriers were randomly assigned to 1 defect in each subject. Non-resorbable barriers were removed in six weeks. Plaque index (PlI)

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is an important surgical method for periodontal regeneration. By placing barrier membrane on the root surface of the tooth to guide the adhesion and proliferation of periodontal ligament cells, periodontal tissue regeneration can be achieved. This review intends to analyze the current limitations of GTR membranes and to propose possible solutions for developing new ones. Limitations of current GTR membranes include nonabsorbable membranes and absorbable synthetic polymer membranes exhibit weak biocompatibility; when applying to a large defect wound, the natural

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, is caused by dental plaque invading the periodontal tissues and is the most common oral disease. The basic treatment methods applied in the clinic can destroy dental plaque, smooth the root surface, and reduce local inflammation, but it is difficult to completely regenerate and rebuild the complex three-dimensional periodontal tissues. The rapid development of periodontal tissue engineering has led to the development of new methods for the treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) are ke

The periodontal tissue regeneration strategy based on guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membranes is an effective therapy for periodontal defects. Traditional GTR membranes, however, primarily serve as physical barriers and lack antimicrobial and osteogenic functions. Herein, we developed a multifunctional nanofiber membrane with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) loaded in a hydrophilic gelatin layer. The release of Zn2+ from the ZIF-8 NPs effectively promoted bone tissue repair and simultaneously enabled GTR membranes with >99 % antibacterial efficacies against Escheri
