Violence and Public and Personal Health: Gun Violence.

The rate of death due to guns is higher in the United States than in other high-income countries. More than 200 Americans are murdered or assaulted with a firearm daily. In the United States, more than 300,000 individuals have died from firearm injuries in the past decade. Firearm injuries cost more than $3 billion per year, and deaths from guns cause more than $20 billion in lifetime work loss and medical costs. Risk factors for being a perpetrator of gun violence include a personal history of or exposure to individuals with violent tendencies, untreated mental disorders, substance abuse, and

Community distress predicts youth gun violence.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate our institution's experience with pediatric firearm events. We sought to determine the relationship between a community's level of socioeconomic distress and the incidence of youth gun violence. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of children <18 years involved in firearm events. Using visual cluster analysis, we portrayed all firearm events and violent firearm events (assaults + homicides). Distressed community indices (DCIs) were obtained from an interface that uses US Census Bureau data. Incident rate ratios (IRRs) were calc

A global perspective on gun violence injuries.

INTRODUCTION AND DEFINITIONS: Civilian gunshot violence is a growing public health issue on a global scale. Treatment of patients with gunshot injuries is based on algorithms derived from military studies, but the distinct differences in weaponry, energy of injury, timing and type of care, and environment translate to a gap in knowledge. With a focus on non-accidental gunshot trauma and excluding suicide etiologies, we propose to build a collaborative research group to address important questions focused on best practices for gunshot injury patients. PRE-HOSPITAL CARE: There are important dif

Gun- and Non-Gun-Related Violence Exposure and Risk for Subsequent Gun Carrying Among Male Juvenile Offenders.

OBJECTIVE: Although studies have found that youth exposed to violence are more likely to carry guns than non-exposed youth, this association could be due to common causal factors or other pre-existing differences between individuals. In this study, within-individual change models were used to determine whether juvenile offenders exhibit an increased propensity to carry a firearm after being exposed to gun violence and/or non-gun violence. The advantage of this approach is all time-invariant factors are eliminated as potential confounders. METHOD: A sample of 1,170 racially/ethnically diverse

Gun possession among American youth: a discovery-based approach to understand gun violence.

OBJECTIVE: To apply discovery-based computational methods to nationally representative data from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions' Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System to better understand and visualize the behavioral factors associated with gun possession among adolescent youth. RESULTS: Our study uncovered the multidimensional nature of gun possession across nearly five million unique data points over a ten year period (2001-2011). Specifically, we automated odds ratio calculations for 55 risk behaviors to assemble a comprehensive table of associations for every behavior c

The color of risk protection orders: gun violence, gun laws, and racial justice.

BACKGROUND: Extreme risk protection order (ERPO) laws give municipal police officers new authority, through a civil restraining order, to remove firearms from people who are deemed to pose an imminent risk of causing serious harm to others or themselves. Despite the expected public safety benefit of ERPOs, it is possible that implicit racial bias could infect ERPO petitions, the court processes that authorize and extend the gun removal orders, or the behavior of the police in serving and enforcing them. How might potential racial disparities in ERPO implementation qualify the evidence that thi

Long gun violence in California versus Texas: How legislation can reduce firearm violence.

INTRODUCTION: Long guns (LGs) are uniquely implicated in firearm violence and mass shootings. On 1/1/2019 California (CA) raised the minimum age to purchase LGs from 18 to 21. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of LG violence in CA vs. Texas (TX), a state with rising firearm usage and fewer LG regulations, hypothesizing decreased LG firearm incidents in CA vs increased rates in TX after CA LG legislation. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Gun Violence Archive (2015-2021) was performed. An additional analysis of all firearm incidents within TX and CA was performed. CA and TX cen

Addressing gun violence across sectors in Durham, North Carolina.

Firearm-related death and injury are largely preventable. Coordinated efforts across sectors, including government, healthcare, and community partners, can substantially reduce firearm-related mortality and harm. Durham, North Carolina has a wide range of successfully implemented programs working to combat gun violence harm from many angles. Here, teams from several initiatives with partners across Duke University and the Durham community describe goals, outcomes, and challenges faced in their collaborations. These efforts represent multisectoral partnerships to improve support and resources f

The Peacemaker Fellowship and Urban Gun Violence in Richmond, California.

IMPORTANCE: Firearm violence is a leading cause of premature death and disability in the US. Increasingly, public health approaches to prevent gun violence are being implemented to reduce its social and medical costs. A previous evaluation of the Peacemaker Fellowship found it was associated with a 43% reduction in firearm homicides and assaults through 2016. However, evidence about effectiveness beyond this period remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the long-term associations between the implementation of the Office of Neighborhood Safety's Peacemaker Fellowship and fatal and nonfatal fir

Guns in Intimate Partner Violence: Comparing Incidents by Type of Weapon.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess the frequency, nature, and outcome of weapon use in intimate partner violence (IPV) and to assess compliance with related gun policies. METHODS: Data were drawn from forms police are mandated to complete at the scene of IPV in the fifth largest U.S. city during 2013. Proportions were calculated and odds ratios were adjusted for demographic and contextual characteristics and a Bonferroni correction for multiple statistical tests was applied. RESULTS: Of the 35,413 incidents, 6,573 involved hands, fists, or feet, and 1,866 involved external weapo

Gun and Other Weapon-Involved Intimate Partner Violence and Psychiatric Symptoms.

IMPORTANCE: Gun, knife, or other weapon involvement in intimate partner violence (IPV) may indicate heightened actual and perceived lethality and coercive control, but its mental health impacts on survivors are poorly understood after accounting for other IPV and prior mental health symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the adjusted association between gun and other weapon-involved IPV and symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder (PD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD), accounting for concurrent and past nonweapon physical IPV, ps

AOA Critical Issues Symposium: Gun Violence as a Public Health Crisis.

Gun violence is an epidemic throughout the United States and is increasing around the world-it is a public health crisis. The impact of gun violence is not limited to the victims (our patients); it also extends to the physicians and caregivers who are taking care of these patients every day. Even more broadly, gun violence affects those living and going to work in potentially dangerous environments. The "vicarious trauma" that is experienced in these situations can have long-term effects on physicians, nurses, and communities. Importantly, socioeconomic disparities and community deprivation st

Ecologic factors relating to firearm injuries and gun violence in Chicago.

BACKGROUND: Firearm violence is a major burden on Chicago with greater than 1500 gunshot injuries occurring annually. Identifying ecologic variables related to the incidence of firearm-related injuries and crime could prove useful for developing new strategies for reducing gun-related injuries. METHODS: The Illinois Trauma Registry (ITSR) and the Chicago Police Department's CLEAR (Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting) dataset were retrospectively analyzed to investigate group-level factors potentially related to the incidence of gun-related injuries and crime in Chicago from 1999 th

Gun Violence Exposure and the Perceived Need to Carry a Firearm: The Role of Community Violence Intervention Awareness.

Gun violence exposure (GVE) is associated with adverse mental health outcomes and firearm carrying. The extent to which community-led programs aimed at reducing violence counteract these effects is unknown. This study sought to examine (1) the relationships between GVE, anticipated risk of assault, psychological distress, and the perceived need to carry a firearm for protection and (2) whether awareness of community violence intervention (CVI) efforts in one's neighborhood moderates these associations. We used weighted survey data from a representative sample of 2,285 Detroit residents collect

Proximal predictors of gun violence among adolescent males involved in crime.

The growing public health and legal concerns regarding gun violence has led to a call for research that investigates risk factors for gun violence across a variety of domains. Individual and sociocontextual risk factors have been associated with violence more broadly, and in some instances gun-carrying, however no prior research has investigated the role of these factors in explaining gun violence using longitudinal data. The current study utilized a subsample (N = 161) from the Pathways to Desistance Study, which is a longitudinal sample of serious adolescent offenders to evaluate interindivi

Recent, Nearby Gun Violence and Recurrent Psychiatric Exacerbation in Children and Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Gun violence and youth mental illness are urgent public health concerns. Although prior studies have linked community violence with pediatric mental health outcomes, little is known about the connection between exposure to hyperlocal gun violence and the short-term risk of a psychiatric emergency at the individual level. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the impact of recent, nearby gun violence exposure on pediatric recurrent psychiatric exacerbation risk following an index psychiatric hospital admission or emergency department (ED) visit. DESIGN: Retrospective longitudinal cohort study us

The Transmission of Gun and Other Weapon-Involved Violence Within Social Networks.

Fatal and nonfatal injuries resulting from gun violence remain a persistent problem in the United States. The available research suggests that gun violence diffuses among people and across places through social relationships. Understanding the relationship between gun violence within social networks and individual gun violence risk is critical in preventing the spread of gun violence within populations. This systematic review examines the existing scientific evidence on the transmission of gun and other weapon-related violence in household, intimate partner, peer, and co-offending networks. Ou
