Diabetes mellitus is a complex metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, and associated with long-term damage and dysfunction of various organs. Management of diabetes is therefore vital and involves maintaining euglycemia as much as possible by reducing blood glucose and by increasing insulin sensitivity and peripheral glucose uptake. Ayurveda has promoted the management of diabetes by regulating carbohydrate metabolism using several medicinal herbs, one of which is Gymnema sylvestre (GS). GS has been used in parts of India as a hypoglycemic agent and the results have been en

Hepatitis-associated aplastic anaemia (HAAA) is a rare condition characterised by onset of acute hepatitis which is followed by development of severe pancytopenia due to bone marrow failure within 6 months. This syndrome can be precipitated by acute viral infections, but the aetiology remains unknown in the majority. Drug-induced HAAA is extremely rare and has been reported with nutritional and dietary supplements in current literature. We report the first cases of ayurvedic herbal and homeopathic remedies-associated HAAA in two patients which proved fatal in both. Evaluation of patients with

Toxic hepatitis or drug-induced liver injury (DILI) encompasses a spectrum of conditions ranging from mild biochemical abnormalities to acute liver failure. Recent studies report that 35% to 48% of patients with diabetes use some form of complementary and alternative medical therapy. Moreover, >800 plants have been traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes. Despite this widespread use, only few were supported by rigorous clinical evidence. Gymnema sylvestre, also known as gurmar (sugar destroyer in Hindi), is a plant considered to be with potent antidiabetic effects and, hence, widely u

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is crucial in the fight against malaria. The rise of resistance to most antimalarial medicines has been a serious hurdle to effective treatment. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are currently the most effective antimalarial medication. Malaria parasites are growing more resistant to ACTs, particularly in Southeast Asia. As a result, effective alternative antimalarials are in high demand. The leaf extract of Gymnema inodorum (GIE) has previously shown promise as an effective antimalarial. Therefore, this study evaluated the antimalarial potential of combin

Two water soluble extracts, GS3 and GS4, obtained from the leaves of Gymnema sylvestre, were tested in streptozotocin treated rats for their effects on blood glucose homeostasis and pancreatic endocrine tissue. In the diabetic rats, fasting blood glucose levels returned to normal after 60 days of GS3 and after 20 days of GS4 oral administration. Blood collected during the conduct of oral glucose tolerance tests was used to assay for serum insulin. GS3 and GS4 therapy led to a rise in serum insulin to levels closer to normal fasting levels. In diabetic rat pancreas, both GS3 and GS4 were able t

Gymnema sylvestre (GS) contains gymnemic acids which can reversibly suppress sweet taste responses. This randomised crossover study aimed to investigate whether supplemental GS use can reduce sugar cravings, sweet food desire and consumption among adults that identify as high sweet food consumers (having a 'sweet tooth'). Participants were told three different mints were trialled to avoid bias. On day zero, 32 healthy participants underwent baseline sensory testing for sweet taste perception using the placebo mint (PLAC). Participants were then randomised into the two intervention groups.
