Connections of the olfactory bulb in the gymnotiform fish, Apteronotus leptorhynchus.

This work examines the connectivity of the olfactory bulb in the gynmotiform fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. Wheat germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase was iontophoresed in different areas and depths of the bulb in order to define its efferent and afferent connections. The olfactory bulb projects bilaterally via the medial (medial and centromedial fascicles) and lateral olfactory (lateral and centrolateral fascicles) tracts. The nervus terminalis courses through the ventromedial aspect of the bulb to terminate in parts of the medial subpallium and hypothalamus. Its telencephalic c

Chromatophores and their role in the healing process of the integument of Gymnotus carapo (Teleostei: Gymnotiformes).

Changes in integument pigmentation in fish can occur due to trauma, parasite attachment, or bacterial, viral, and fungal skin infections. Experimental wound-healing models have proven to be valuable tools for studying these processes. This study aims to characterize the chromatophores of Gymnotus carapo and their role in the healing process, using an experimental wound-healing model. The analysis focused primarily on melanophores due to their predominance in the species' integument; other pigment cell types were not detected in the examined tissues. A total of 25 adult banded knifefish specime

Parasitism by Clinostomum marginatum (Clinostomidae) in neotropical electric fish (Gymnotiformes) in the Brazilian Amazon.

Gymnotiformes are currently recognized as electric fish, the vast majority of which emit low power electrical discharges. Clinostomum trematodes have been the subject of numerous investigations in several host species due to the ability of metacercariae of this genus to infect the muscles, fins and internal organs of fish. The present study aimed to record, for the first time, the occurrence of parasitism by Clinostomum marginatum in Gymnotiformes from the natural environments of two tributaries of the Amazon River in the Brazilian Amazon. Two specimens of Gymnotus coropinae, ten specimens of

Bony Patchwork: Mosaic Patterns of Evolution in the Skull of Electric Fishes (Apteronotidae: Gymnotiformes).

Mosaic evolution refers to the pattern whereby different organismal traits exhibit differential rates of evolution typically due to reduced levels of trait covariation through deep time (i.e., modularity). These differences in rates can be attributed to variation in responses to selective pressures between individual traits. Differential responses to selective pressures also have the potential to facilitate functional specialization, allowing certain traits to track environmental stimuli more closely than others. The teleost skull is a multifunctional structure comprising a complex network of

Finding food in the dark: how trajectories of a gymnotiform fish change with spatial learning.

We analyzed the trajectories of freely foraging Gymnotus sp., a pulse-type gymnotiform weakly electric fish, swimming in a dark arena. For each fish, we compared the its initial behavior as it learned the relative location of landmarks and food with its behavior after learning was complete, i.e. after time/distance to locate food had reached a minimal asymptotic level. During initial exploration when the fish did not know the arena layout, trajectories included many sharp angle head turns that occurred at nearly completely random intervals. After spatial learning was complete, head turns becam

A new species of sexually dimorphic and rheophilic ghost knifefish (Apteronotidae: Gymnotiformes) from the Amazon basin.

A new species of ghost knifefish, Apteronotus, is described from high-energy environments in the Rios Mapuera and Trombetas (at Cachoeira Porteira waterfalls), Brazil. X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT scan) was used to access the internal anatomy of the type series. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the anteriormost position of the anus, with its posterior margin extending less than one eye diameter beyond the vertical through the caudal limit of the posterior nostril, the low number of anal-fin rays (117-125) and the reduced number of branchiostegal rays (three). Distribution of somatostatin (SRIF) in the brain and pituitary of Eigenmannia lineata (Gymnotiformes, Teleostei). An immunohistochemical study.

Somatostatin-immunoreactive (SRIFi) cells in the brain and pituitary of the weakly-electric teleost Eigenmannia lineata were identified immunohistochemically by the use of unlabelled antibodies and the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique. Several groups of neurons and fibres were immunostained in Eigenmannia's brain. Intensely SRIFi neurons occurred in the nucleus entopeduncularis, in the nucleus preaeopticus, and in the nucleus dorsolateralis between the commissura posterior and the nucleus glomerulosus, the latter two structures being completely devoid of immunoreactive elements. Few weakly-

Time disparity sensitive behavior and its neural substrates of a pulse-type gymnotiform electric fish, Brachyhypopomus gauderio.

Roles of the time coding electrosensory system in the novelty responses of a pulse-type gymnotiform electric fish, Brachyhypopomus, were examined behaviorally, physiologically, and anatomically. Brachyhypopomus responded with the novelty responses to small changes (100 μs) in time difference between electrosensory stimulus pulses applied to different parts of the body, as long as these pulses were given within a time period of ~500 μs. Physiological recording revealed neurons in the hindbrain and midbrain that fire action potentials time-locked to stimulus pulses with short latency (500-900 μs

Adult neurogenesis in the Uruguayan teleost species Austrolebias charrua and Gymnotus omarorum.

Neurogenesis -the process by which new neurons are generated in the brain- is critical for nervous system development and plasticity. Adult neurogenesis underlies growth, repair, and adaptation to environmental changes. Vertebrates differ in their neurogenic and regenerative capacity, being particularly prominent in teleost as adult neurogenesis occurs throughout the rostral-caudal brain axis. This review examines adult proliferation and neurogenesis in the autochthonous Uruguayan teleost Austrolebias charrua and Gymnotus omarorum. A. charrua are annual fishes that live in temporary freshwater

A simple model of the electrosensory electromotor loop in Gymnotus omarorum.

This article introduces and tests a simple model that describes a neural network found in nature, the electrosensory control of an electromotor pacemaker. The cornerstone of the model is an early-stage filter based on the subtraction of a feedforward integrated version of the recent sensory past from the present input signal. The output of this filter governs the modulation of a premotor pacemaker command driving the sensory signal carrier generation and, in consequence, the timing of subsequent electrosensory input. This early filter has a biological parallel in the known connectivity of the

Morphometric and immunohistochemical characterization of Rodlet cells in the kidney and liver of Gymnotus carapo.

Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly exposed to environmental stressors capable of inducing physiological and immunological alterations in aquatic organisms. In this context, fish are widely recognized as valuable bioindicators because they reflect environmental changes at tissue and cellular levels. The present study aimed to characterize the morphology, morphometry, and NF-κB immunoreactivity of Rodlet cells (RCs) in the kidney and liver of the Neotropical teleost Gymnotus carapo. A total of 32 specimens collected from natural lentic environments (n = 14) and commercial holding facilities

Strategies of object polarization and their role in electrosensory information gathering.

Weakly electric fish polarize the nearby environment with a stereotyped electric field and gain information by detecting the changes imposed by objects with tuned sensors. Here we focus on polarization strategies as paradigmatic bioinspiring mechanisms for sensing devices. We begin this research developing a toy model that describes three polarization strategies exhibited by three different groups of fish. We then report an experimental analysis which confirmed predictions of the model and in turn predicted functional consequences that were explored in behavioral experiments in the pulse fish

High substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) in the olfactory and electrosensory cells of gymnotid fish.

Substance P has been proposed as a candidate neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in the nociceptive system. Using a light microscopial immunohistochemical peroxidase-anti-peroxidase technique we have detected high substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) in several types of sensory organs of 4 species of gymnotiform teleost fish: olfactory epithelium, vestibular, lateral line and electrosensory organs. The olfactory nerve and its endings within the olfactory bulb and the telencephalon were also strongly labelled. At these sites no SPLI was revealed in other teleosts (Carassius auratus, Gnathone

Predictive uncertainty in state-estimation drives active sensing.

Animals use active sensing movements to shape the spatiotemporal characteristics of sensory signals to better perceive their environment under varying conditions. However, the underlying mechanisms governing the generation of active sensing movements are not known. To address this, we investigated the role of active sensing movements in the refuge tracking behavior ofEigenmannia virescens, a species of weakly electric fish. These fish track the longitudinal movements of a refuge in which they hide by swimming back and forth in a single linear dimension. During refuge tracking,Eigenmanniaexhibi

Diagnosis and Off-Label Treatment of Subcutaneous Putative Dracunculoid Nematodes in Apteronotus albifrons Originating From Wild-Caught Fisheries.

Apteronotus albifrons (Gymnotiformes: Apteronotidae), commonly known as the black ghost knifefish, is a high-value ornamental fish that is susceptible to various parasites. The affected fish were wild-caught fisheries and subsequently introduced into a commercial breeding system. Among parasitic diseases, subcutaneous infections with putative dracunculoid nematodes are rarely documented in ornamental fish, and their management may be particularly challenging in wild-caught specimens introduced into breeding systems. This study aimed to describe an outbreak of subcutaneous helminthiasis in A. a

Optimal movement in the prey strikes of weakly electric fish: a case study of the interplay of body plan and movement capability.

Animal behaviour arises through a complex mixture of biomechanical, neuronal, sensory and control constraints. By focusing on a simple, stereotyped movement, the prey capture strike of a weakly electric fish, we show that the trajectory of a strike is one which minimizes effort. Specifically, we model the fish as a rigid ellipsoid moving through a fluid with no viscosity, governed by Kirchhoff's equations. This formulation allows us to exploit methods of discrete mechanics and optimal control to compute idealized fish trajectories that minimize a cost function. We compare these with the measur

Packet information encoding in a cerebellum-like circuit.

Packet information encoding of neural signals was proposed for vision about 50 years ago and has recently been revived as a plausible strategy generalizable to natural and artificial sensory systems. It involves discrete image segmentation controlled by feedback and the ability to store and compare packets of information. This article shows that neurons of the cerebellum-like electrosensory lobe (EL) of the electric fish Gymnotus omarorum use spike-count and spike-timing distribution as constitutive variables of packets of information that encode one-by-one the electrosensory images generated
