[Clinico-neuropsychological syndromes involving the human gyrus cinguli].

There was performed clinical and neurophysiological observation of 41 patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of gyrus cinguli. Disorders of memory appeared to be the main manifestations before the operation in 38 patients, moreover they had the features of Korsakov's syndrome in 5 patients. Autonomic and epileptic-like fits weren't quite characteristic. Memory impairment was observed in 23 from 38 patients after operation, however there weren't found any qualitatively new disorders. The first appearance of Korsakov's syndrome after operation was found in 3 patients. The degree of the

Case report. Gelastic seizures in a patient with right gyrus cinguli astrocytoma.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Gelastic seizure (GS) also known as "gelastic epilepsy" is a rare type of seizure associated with several different conditions such as tumors--hypothalamic hamartromas, tuberous sclerosis, hemangiomas, post infectious foci, cortical temporal dysplasia. We report one case of this rare condition generated by a right gyrus cinguli gr. II astrocytoma. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 27 year-old male, right handed, was admitted for a 2 years history of very frequent gelastic seizures accompanied sometimes by simple motor partial seizures in both arms, more often being involved h

[The clinical neuropsychological aspects in the surgical treatment of arteriovenous malformations of the gyrus cinguli].

Clinical and neuropsychological studies of the outcomes of surgical treatment in patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the gyrus cinguli were conducted. Preoperative examination revealed predominantly memory disorders in 38 cases. Of them 5 cases had amnestic disturbances similar to those of the Korsakoff syndrome. Autonomic and epileptic seizures were not common. Thirty eight patients underwent surgery. Memory deterioration was recorded in 23 cases postoperatively. Three patients developed a "new" Korsakoff syndrome. The rate of deterioration of memory disorders showed a clear co

[Quantitative studies on the dendritic spine distribution on the lamina-5 pyramidal cells in the anterior gyrus cinguli of the rat].

At three months old male rats the spine-distribution of the main dendrite and of the apical and basal dendrites of 36 lamina V-pyramidal cells of the regio cingularis (anterior cingulate cortex) was analyzed (from every subregion -- neocortex, mesoneocortex, mesoarchicortex -- 12 neurons). 1. The limbic pyramidal neurons show the same spine-distribution at their main dendrite as neocortical neurons of other brain regions and other mammal-species do: after an initial segment with poor spines only there follows an rapid increase of the spine-values with an amount at a range of 150 mum from the p

Cingulate cortex aplasia and callosal dysgenesia combined with schizencephaly in a patient with chronic lying.

We report on a 19-year-old patient with a 4-year history of lying and cheating who presented neuropsychological abnormalities regarding attention deficits, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed schizencephaly of the right central region, dysgenesia of the corpus callosum, a noneverted gyrus cinguli and hypoplasia of the left cerebellar hemisphere. Although the patient did not fulfill the diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, we suggest that the patient's behavioral alteration could be related to the neuroanatomical alterat

Isolation and estimation of gangliosides in discrete regions of the forebrain: effects of estrogen on regional lipid profiles.

The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the neurochemical changes in the levels of gangliosides, total lipids, phospholipids, cholesterol, esterified fatty acids and triglyceride of the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdaloid nucleus, midline nuclei of thalamus, gyrus cinguli and olfactory bulbs following the intramuscular administration of ethinylestradiol (100 mcg) to each female rabbit daily for 30 days. Remarkable increment in the concentration of gangliosides was discernible in hippocampus, amygdaloid nucleus and olfactory bulbs. Interestingly, these levels showed significant decr

A primitive gigantopyramidal field buried in the depth of the cingulate sulcus of the human brain.

By stereomicroscopical examination of a complete series of pigment preparations up to 1000 mum thick, a gigantopyramidal area in the brain of man is described, which lies in front of the primary motor field on the medial surface of the hemisphere and is almost totally buried in the depth of the cingulate sulcus extending in both length and width over about 15 mm. Serial sections cut in the transverse plane display the field approximately within the limits of the commissura anterior on the one hand and the corpora mamillaria on the other, where it occupies large parts of the dorsal wall of the

[Quantitative study of the apical dendritic spines in the cingulate lamina-V-pyramid neurons of the rat following oral application of alcohol].

The question answered in this paper is whether the apical dendritic spines-values of lamina-V-pyramidal cells of the gyrus cinguli of the rat are changed as a result of the oral application of ethanol. Alcohol-application causes a statistically significant increase of apical spines, especially at the main dendrite when given during the early postnatal development phase, where the brain is still impressible. The results are discussed as compensatory achievement of the not degeneratively changed neurons, while other pyramids show signs of degeneration. The conclusions were compared with the resu

An unusual case of Pick's disease.

A man aged 64, with a history of chronic trichloroethylene intoxication, presented early headache, impairment of memory, and "stehende Redensarten", later on mental deterioration with muteness and oral tendency. He died of bronchopneumonia. The brain was studied by light and electron microscopy. Numerous inflated cells, intraneuronal argentophil Pick bodies and central chromatolysis of neurons were found throughout the cerebral cortex. Widespread diffuse fibrillary gliosis was the finding bearing a striking resemblance to "progressive subcortical gliosis". Severe loss of nerve cells was observ

Functional connectivity gradients of the cingulate cortex.

Heterogeneity of the cingulate cortex is evident in multiple dimensions including anatomy, function, connectivity, and involvement in networks and diseases. Using the recently developed functional connectivity gradient approach and resting-state functional MRI data, we found three functional connectivity gradients that captured distinct dimensions of cingulate hierarchical organization. The principal gradient exhibited a radiating organization with transitions from the middle toward both anterior and posterior parts of the cingulate cortex and was related to canonical functional networks and c

[One cannot be careful enough in the choice of one's parents--on the biopsychosocial development of adaptation systems for distress in Homo sapiens].

Actual results of brain research show that we might have more than one system to cope with distress. The most archaic one might be the system freeze/dissociation. The second one is the system attachment/relationship/herd/support. Articles by Allan N. Schore show that the central regulation of the self, the affects, and the interpersonal relations are impaired permanently by relational traumata/attachment traumata during early childhood. Jaak Panksepp differentiates the distress systems panic versus fear. On the one side we find the cluster panic--periaqueductal gray PAG--lateral septum--gyrus

Alpha Power in the Cingulate Cortex reflects Accumulated Winnings During Gambling in Humans.

When making bets one's level of attention determines how much they may win. The cingulate cortex is a brain region associated with attention and may influence behaviors during gambling. With data gathered from the cingulate cortex in humans implanted with depth electrodes for clinical purposes while performing a gambling task of high card, we determine a relationship between neural correlates of attention and accumulated winnings. Specifically, we analyze how changes in alpha power (8-12 Hz) in the CC relate to accumulated winnings. We compared three subjects with different betting strategies:

Effects of COVID-19 on brain and cerebellum: a voxel based morphometrical analysis.

OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus and turned into a pandemic in a short time, affects many organs and systems, especially the nervous system. In the present study, it was aimed to determine the morphological and volumetric changes in cortical and subcortical structures in recovered COVID-19 patients. BACKGROUND: We think that COVID-19 has a long-term effect on cortical and subcortical structures. METHODS: In our study, 50 post-COVID-19 patients and 50 healthy volunteers participated. In both groups, brain parcellations were made with Voxel-Based Morphometry (VBM) and regions

Cingulate role in Tourette syndrome.

This chapter comprehensively reviews the published record for neurosurgical, neurostimulatory, and neuroimaging evidence of the involvement of the cingulate gyrus in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS). The most noteworthy evidence comes from neuroimaging. Neuroimaging findings were rarely exclusive to the cingulate cortex and tended to implicate multiple other cortices as well. Some results are reflective of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms of TS. Copious findings, however, drawn from structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), magnetic resonance spectroscop

Role of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex in obsessive-compulsive disorder: converging evidence from cognitive neuroscience and psychiatric neurosurgery.

OBJECTIVE Advances in understanding the neurobiological basis of psychiatric disorders will improve the ability to refine neuromodulatory procedures for treatment-refractory patients. One of the core dysfunctions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a deficit in cognitive control, especially involving the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC). The authors' aim was to derive a neurobiological understanding of the successful treatment of refractory OCD with psychiatric neurosurgical procedures targeting the dACC. METHODS First, the authors systematically conducted a review of the literatu

[Agnosia for streets and defective root finding].

Topographical disorientation is identified as a condition in which patients are unable to find their way in familiar surroundings, such as their home neighborhood or the admitting hospital after the onset of illness. I proposed to classify topographical disorientation into two categories: agnosia for streets (landmark agnosia) and defective root finding (heading disorientation). Patients with agnosia for streets are unable to identify familiar buildings and landscapes. They can, however, morphologically perceive them and remember their way around familiar areas. The lesions are located in the

Neural structures associated with recognition of facial expressions of basic emotions.

People with Huntington's disease and people suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder show severe deficits in recognizing facial expressions of disgust, whereas people with lesions restricted to the amygdala are especially impaired in recognizing facial expressions of fear. This double dissociation implies that recognition of certain basic emotions may be associated with distinct and non-overlapping neural substrates. Some authors, however, emphasize the general importance of the ventral parts of the frontal cortex in emotion recognition, regardless of the emotion being recognized. In this
