We describe two children who had Fisher syndrome subsequent to Campylobacter jejuni enteritis. The C. jejuni isolates from both patients, who lived in different areas, belonged to PEN 2: LIO 4. One patient had the following human leukocyte antigens (HLAs): HLA-A24, 33; B44, 52; DQ1; and DR2, 6 antigens. Another had the HLA-A24, 33; B44, 54; Cw1; DQ1, 4; and DR4, 6. An effort should be made to isolate C. jejuni from patients with Fisher syndrome and to perform HLA typing so that the pathogenesis of this syndrome can be clarified.

Biliary atresia (BA) is a neonatal obstructive cholangiopathy characterized by a fibrosclerosing obliteration of the extrahepatic bile duct. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between human leukocyte antigens (HLA) and susceptibility to BA. T-cell responses play a critical role in the control of SARS-CoV-2 infections. Here, we examined the T-cell response to a conserved, immunodominant HLA-A*24:02-restricted SARS-CoV-2 spike protein epitope, QI9/A24 (QYIKWPWYI; residues 1208-1216). Thirty-two actinic prurigo patients of Cree ancestry underwent human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) typing and were compared with 32 control subjects of Cree ancestry. We found a significantly increased frequency of HLA-A24 and Cw4 antigens and a significant decrease in the frequency of the A3 antigen in actinic prurigo patients. These HLA associations may be helpful in determining whether actinic prurigo is a distinct disease or a variant of polymorphous light eruption.

The low-expression allele HLA-A*24020102L was identified on a likely haplotype bearing B*55, Cw*01 during the investigation of nine cases (four families and five unrelated subjects) of HLA-A*24 lacking the A24 specificity. To help clarify the molecular basis of tumor immunology in lung cancer, we have investigated antigens recognized by HLA-A24-restricted CTLs established from T cells infiltrating into lung adenocarcinoma and report a new gene encoding tumor epitopes recognized by the CTLs. The incidence rate of HLA class I and II antigens has been studied in 168 and 82 patients with diffuse toxic goiter, respectively. Positive association is found for HLA antigens A2, A3, A28, B8, B15, B17, Cw4, DR5; negative one with antigens A24, Bw4, Bw6, Cw1, Cw2, Cw3, Cw5, DR9. Lung cancer is the most commonly occurring malignancy worldwide and one of the few that continues to show an increasing incidence. A number of cases have been identified (seven unrelated individuals from the Northern Ireland bone marrow donor registry and two family groups) where an HLA-A*24 allele fails to express the normal HLA-A24 antigen. Family information has revealed common haplotypes with respect to each non-expressed allele indicating that the occurrence of these mutations has been a recent event. Two methods for the clinical typing of these alleles have been evaluated--PCR-SSOP and PCR-SSCP analysis.

At ages 31 and 42 years, two brothers presented with clinical, pharmacologic, electrophysiologic, and immunologic characteristics of autoimmune myasthenia gravis. At thymectomy, both had histologic findings of epithelial thymoma. HLA analysis revealed A2, A3, B7, and B39 antigens in one patient and A3, A24, B7, and B40 antigens in the other. Familial myasthenia gravis with thymoma has not been described previously. Familial thymoma has been rarely reported, but never with myasthenia gravis.
