Treatment of chondrosarcomas is limited to resection because these tumors are unresponsive to standard adjuvant treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. We have previously shown that high-grade chondrosarcomas express unspecified members of the Melanoma Antigen (MAGE) gene family. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that a hemochromatosis allele is implicated in the expression of porphyria cutanea tarda. HLA phenotypes were determined in 69 porphyria cutanea tarda patients, 42 of which had the sporadic type (normal erythrocyte uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity) and 27 unrelated patients who had the familial type (diminished erythrocyte uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity). HLA antigen frequencies were studied in 20 patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid and 245 normal persons. HLA-B12 demonstrated an increased frequency of 45% in patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid which was statistically significant when compared to a frequency of 19.6% in the general population (P less than 0.02). The HLA-A3 alloantigen, usually associated with the hemochromatosis gene, was detected in 12 of 18 patients (67%) with sporadic porphyria cutanea tarda but in only 23 per cent of 328 normal subjects (p = 0.0006). This difference remained significant after correcting for the number of HLA-A locus antigens tested (p = 0.025). These results suggest that an HLA-linked hemochromatosis allele is present and may account for the iron abnormalities in many patients with sporadic porphyria cutanea tarda.

AIM: To determine whether there is an immunogenic connection and antigen difference between the HLA antigens in the erosive (EOLP) and reticular (ROLP) oral lichen planus.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: 73 patients with ROLP and EOLP have been tested. Typing of the HLA antigens has been made for locus A and B. The typing of the HLA was conducted with the use of microlymphocyto toxic test by Terasaki. The reading of the findings has been conducted with an inverse microscope. Advanced hepatic fibrosis occurs in up to 25% of individuals with C282Y homozygous hemochromatosis. Our aim was to determine whether human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A3 and B7 alleles act as genetic modifiers of the likelihood of advanced hepatic fibrosis. Uveitis is a general term that refers to the inflammation of uveal tract, which is an important cause of blindness in young people. It is well known that uveitis can be the initial manifestation of a systemic disease (S.D.), and may appear years before the diagnosis of the primary disease. Uveitis should be integrated in a systemic study with proper testing. Therefore, the diagnosis is a matter for the ophthalmologist and the Specialist in internal medicine. We have made a retrospective study of 71 patients with chronic uveitis or panuveitis. We found 54.9% of primary uveitis and 45.1% of S.D.

We have searched for possible associations between HLA antigens and meningococcal disease. Forty-three unrelated patients who recovered from meningococcal disease were typed for 37 HLA-A, -B and -C antigens, and 20 of them were also typed for eight HLA-DR antigens. As compared to healthy controls, a higher frequency of the HLA-A3 antigen was found among patients recovered from meningococcal septicaemia, but the difference was not statistically significant. Thirty-two actinic prurigo patients of Cree ancestry underwent human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) typing and were compared with 32 control subjects of Cree ancestry. We found a significantly increased frequency of HLA-A24 and Cw4 antigens and a significant decrease in the frequency of the A3 antigen in actinic prurigo patients. These HLA associations may be helpful in determining whether actinic prurigo is a distinct disease or a variant of polymorphous light eruption.

The investigation was conducted to find out whether there is any association between delusional disorder and HLA antigens. The sample comprised 50 patients with delusional disorder and 282 control samples collected from normal controls. Statistical analysis revealed that the frequency of A3 antigen of the locus A are significantly higher. In case of HLA - B locus significantly higher frequency of B5 and B21 antigens have also been observed. The present study shows that there may be some association of HLA class-1 antigens with delusional disorder.

Increments in platelet counts following the transfusion of platelets mismatched for crossreactive antigens were evaluated in 67 patients with broad alloimmunization to HLA antigens. We have characterized HLA antigens in subjects with beta-thalassaemia trait with and without iron overload. 50% of the cases with iron overload (v 18% of those without iron overload, P less than 0.01) are carriers of HLA-A3, the HLA antigen tightly linked to the IH allele. Thus, in a considerable number of these subjects, beta-thalassaemia and IH coexist. This association exerts a synergistic effect in inducing iron overload.

Class I HLA antigens were determined in 42 patients with diffuse toxic goiter (DTG), 31 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) and in 71 donors. A degree of association of antigen and disease (R) and difference in the frequency of some HLA antigen bearing in the groups of patients and healthy persons were revealed.
