In 82 white patients with myasthenia gravis, a high serum human acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibody titer was related to the presence of the HLA-B8 antigen and increasing severity of the disease and not to age at onset, sex, presence of thymoma, or mode of treatment. The present study was designed to examine the possible association of HLA antigens and schistosomal hepatosplenomegaly and colonic polyposis in a large number of patients and controls. The results show that hepatosplenomegaly was significantly associated with the presence of two HLA antigens: HLA-A1 and B5; and colonic polyposis to HLA-B5 and B8. Furthermore, asymptomatic infection was significantly seen more in subjects with CW2. These results point to possible gentic factors controlling the pathogenesis of disease and susceptibility to infection in human schistosomiasis.

The HLA-B8 antigen is one of the well-defined and characteristic antigens associated with organ specific autoimmune diseases in Caucasians. In the Japanese, HLA-B8 positives have been assumed to be extremely rare. By using some HLA-B8 typing sera, a new HLA-B antigen, HLA-Bw4 positive, was found in the Japanese. This new HLA-B antigen, tentatively named HOK-1, showed a phenotype frequency of 3.7% and a gene frequency of 1.9 +/- 0.6%. Dermatitis herpetiformis is a rare blistering skin disease characterized in part by granular IgA deposits at the dermoepidermal junction, an associated gluten-sensitive enteropathy, and a strong association with the human histocompatibility leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A1 (74% of patients with dermatitis herpetiformis), -B8 (88%), -DR3 (95%), and -DQw2 (100%). Since the description of the association of HLA-B8 antigen with celiac disease, it has been confirmed by many authors. The incidence of HLA-B8 antigen is higher in adults and children when it is compared to apparently healthy controls. Some authors found a reduction on the incidence of HLA-B7 antigen and others suggested that a higher incidence of HLA-B12 antigen in patients HLA-B8 antigen negative, is associated with celiac disease. We studied 19 unrelated patients with celiac disease and 64 controls. Their ages range from 18 months to 18 years old, onset of the disease was during childhood.

Twenty-one patients with dermatitis herpetiformis were typed for HLA-ABC and -DR determinants. The incidence of HLA-AI, -B8 and -DR3 antigens was found to be significantly higher (P: = 10(-3), less than 10(-6) and less than 10(-6), respectively) among patients with dermatitis herpetiformis than among the normal population. Forty children with coeliac disease were subjected to HLA-A and B antigens typing using the two-way lymphocytotoxicity technique. An increase in the frequency of HLA-B8 and B12 was found in patients as compared to the control group. Forty three patients with progressive systemic sclerosis and 24 patients with morphea are typed for 30 antigens of the HLA-A and B series. There is an increase of the frequency of HLA-B8 in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (37% vs. 20% in controls: P less than 0.001, Pcorr. = n.s.). We have identified 67 IgA deficient healthy blood donors in our region by systematic screening of 24,782 blood samples. HLA typing results on 36 of these donors indicated a significant association with both HLA-A1 and HLA-B14 antigens. The frequency of A29 and B8 antigens was also increased. Graves' disease is a thyroid autoimmune disorder associated with specific human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) alleles, characterized by an unpredictable long-term course. Patients refractory to platelet transfusions because of alloimmunization require HLA-matched platelets, which is only possible if a large HLA-typed donor pool is available. However, even then, patients with broad immunization or rare haplotypes may not have suitable donors. In these patients, transfusions with platelets showing low HLA class I expression may be an alternative to fully HLA-matched transfusions. In this study, we quantified the proportion of donors with consistently low HLA-B8, -B12, and -B35 expression on platelets using human monoclonal antibodies specific for these antigens.

We determined the prevalence of 24 antigens controlled by the HLA-A and B loci in twenty patients with juvenile diabetes mellitus (JDM), in twenty patients with coeliac disease (CD), and in eight patients with both of these diseases. HLA antigens and humoral antithyroid immunity have been studied in 97 thyrotoxic patients [48 without and 49 with endocrine ophthalmopathy (EOP)].
