The distribution of HLA-DP antigens were studied in 41 patients with alopecia areata (AA) and 188 ethnically matched controls. An increase of DR4 and possibly DR5 in 24 of these patients has previously been reported. HLA-DP typing for DPw1 through w6 and the local specificity, CDP HEI, was performed using the primed lymphocyte typing (PLT) technique. Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is associated with a markedly increased frequency of the HLA class II antigens DR3 and DQw2. Class II antigen expression on gastric epithelium was investigated using an immunoperoxidase method in relation to the degree of inflammatory cell infiltration in the lamina propria. Sixty-six biopsy specimens from 43 patients with chronic gastritis were examined. 24 psoriasis vulgaris patients were investigated for the expression of class II HLA antigens on the surface of PWM-stimulated T lymphocytes. The percentage of the expression of HLA-DP antigens ranged from 50.1% to 82.6% compared to a 100% level in healthy controls (p less than 0.005). No significant differences in the expression of HLA-DR antigens were observed. We report the case of a renal transplanted patient, in whom the detection of a unique anti HLA-DP antibody response preceded the development of chronic humoral rejection. In addition to donor-specific anti-DP alloantibodies, the patient displayed reactions against several non-donor-specific DP antigens (NDSA). PURPOSE: To investigate the presence of Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) in organ cultured corneas, in lyophilised epikeratophakia lenticules prepared by dry state lathing, and in lenticules subjected to prolonged rehydration in Balanced Salt Solution (BSS).
