Haemoproteus parasites (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) are widespread; some species cause severe diseases in avian hosts. Heavy Haemoproteus infections are often lethal for biting midges (Ceratopogonidae), which transmit avian haemoproteids, but there is no information regarding detrimental effect on other blood-sucking insects. We examined effects of Haemoproteus tartakovskyi (lineage hSISKIN1), Haemoproteus lanii (lineages hRB1and hRBS2) and Haemoproteus balmorali (lineage hCOLL3) on the survival of Ochlerotatus cantans, a widespread Eurasian mosquito. Wild-caught females were infected by all

Haemosporidians constitute a monophyletic group of vector-borne parasites that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including Neotropical lizards. The remarkable diversity of these host-parasite associations and inadequate research on certain parasite groups have resulted in controversial haemosporidian taxonomy. Herein, we rediscover erythrocytic and non-erythrocytic haemosporidians infecting golden tegus (Tupinambis teguixin) from Brazil and Colombia. The erythrocyte-inhabiting parasite belongs to Plasmodium sp., and the non-erythrocytic form was identified as Saurocytozoon tupinambi, pr

Blood parasite (haemosporidian) infections are conventionally detected using blood samples; this implies capturing and handling birds to obtain them, which induces stress and causes pain. Feathers have blood vessels, and some blood could be preserved in the feather's shaft after moulting. We used feather DNA for detecting haemosporidians by PCR testing in diverse scenarios. First, haemosporidian DNA was detected in feathers from carcasses of infected birds, proving the feasibility of the approach. Storage temperature affected DNA recovery, with maximum retrieval and haemosporidian detection at

PURPOSE: Accurate detection and characterization of avian haemosporidian infections remain challenging due to frequent co-infections of morphologically similar and genetically diverse parasite lineages. This study aimed to assess the concordance of different diagnostic approaches in detecting Haemoproteus co-infections.
METHODS: We investigated Haemoproteus infections in the Eurasian blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) using microscopy, PCR from blood and tissue samples, and histological methods including haematoxylin and eosin staining and chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH).
RESULTS: All 45

BACKGROUND: Haemosporida is a diverse order of vector-borne apicomplexan parasites infecting terrestrial vertebrates worldwide, including humans, but the evolutionary relationships among its genera remain unresolved. The phylogenetic placement of two bat-restricted genera, Nycteria and Polychromophilus, both of which lack erythrocytic schizogony, has varied across studies depending on taxon sampling and marker choice.
METHODS: To address this problem, an expanded dataset of near-complete mitochondrial (mtDNA) genomes together with nine nuclear loci were analyzed.
RESULTS: Phylogenetic analys

Leucocytozoon species are common in countries with warm climates but are an often neglected blood parasite in poultry. Although Leucocytozoon macleani is less virulent than Leucocytozoon caulleryi, it can still negatively impact production performance. In Thailand, the available reports indicate a high prevalence of Leucocytozoon spp., but detailed morphological characteristics of the parasites remain insufficiently known. In this study, Giemsa-stained blood smears and extracted genomic (g) DNA were obtained from 60 domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). Blood smears were examined for t

Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are among the most bothersome blood-sucking dipterans causing severe irritation and distress to poultry, wild birds, animals, and humans globally. These insects are vectors of viruses, bacteria, parasitic protozoans, and nematodes of humans and animals. Parasitic protozoa belonging to Haemosporida (Apicomplexa) are distributed worldwide and black flies are the principal vectors of avian haemosporidian parasites of the genus Leucocytozoon, a common parasite of birds. Based on the detection of parasite DNA in insects, 13 black fly species were reported to be pot

INTRODUCTION: Leucocytozoon is an intracellular blood parasite that affects various bird species globally and is transmitted by blackfly vectors. This parasite is responsible for leucocytozoonosis, a disease that results in significant economic losses due to reduced meat and egg production. There is limited knowledge about the epidemiological pattern of leucocytozoonosis and its causative species in Egypt, particularly in pigeons.
METHODS: The current study involved the collection of 203 blood samples from domestic pigeons from various household breeders and local markets across Qena Province

BACKGROUND: Avian haemosporidians are single-celled eukaryotic parasites of vertebrates that require dipteran vectors for transmission. The genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon currently comprise over 5000 parasite lineages based on a 478-bp section of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, which is the standard DNA barcode for avian haemosporidians. The mitochondrial genomes of apicomplexan parasites are highly condensed, with a length of approximately 6000 bp, containing three coding genes (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, cytochrome c oxidase subunit III and cytochrome b) and disp

Haemosporidians are heteroxenous, cosmopolitan protozoa that infect birds, using hematophagous dipterans as vectors. The genus Plasmodium has a moderate species diversity and is known for great flexibility in alternating host species, mild to severe pathogenicity, and generally low prevalence. Plasmodium huffi was first described in 1950 and considered insufficiently characterized, however, in 2021, this species was re-described as infecting two different Brazilian toucans, Ramphastos toco and Pteroglossus aracari. Herein, we describe four new potential avian host species for P. huffi: Pavo cr

BACKGROUND: Most mammalian Plasmodium species possess distinct 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene copies, which are differentially expressed in vertebrate hosts and mosquito vectors. Although similar sequence patterns were found in avian haemosporidian parasites, expression patterns have not been studied yet. This study aimed to test whether 18S variants of Plasmodium relictum SGS1 and Haemoproteus tartakovskyi SISKIN1 are expressed differentially in bird hosts and dipteran vectors using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH).

We describe Leucocytozoon quynzae sp. nov. (Haemosporida, Leucocytozoidae), which is the first Leucocytozoon parasite identified to species level in hummingbirds. It was found in the Amethyst-throated Sunangel (Heliangelus amethysticollis, Trochilidae, Apodiformes) captured in the Palacio Forest, which belongs to the damping zone of Chingaza National Natural Park, Cundinamarca, Colombia, at 2,900 m above sea level where the transmission occurs; the new species were found both in the high Andean forest and Paramo ecosystem. This parasite is described based on the morphology of its blood stages,

Haemosporidian parasites are widely distributed and common parasites of birds, and the application of molecular techniques has revealed remarkable diversity among their lineages. Four haemosporidian genera infect avian hosts (Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon and Fallisia), and Haemoproteus is split into two sub-genera based on morphological evidence and phylogenetic support for two divergent sister clades. One clade (Haemoproteus (Parahaemoproteus)) contains parasites developing in birds belonging to several different orders, except pigeons and doves (Columbiformes), while the other (Ha

Avian haemosporidians are widespread parasites categorized into four families of the order Haemosporida (Apicomplexa). Species of the subgenus Parahaemoproteus (genus Haemoproteus) belong to the Haemoproteidae and are transmitted by Culicoides biting midges. Reports of death due to tissue damage during haemoproteosis in non-adapted birds have raised concerns about these pathogens, especially as their exo-erythrocytic development is known for only a few Haemoproteus spp. More research is needed to better understand the patterns of the parasites' development in tissues and their impact on avian

During exo-erythrocytic merogony, avian Haemoproteus parasites (Apicomplexa, Haemosporida) develop distinct tissue stages: small meronts and large megalomeronts. Recent molecular studies suggest that Haemoproteus species develop either of the two morphotypes in naturally infected birds but earlier research indicates that certain species form both depending on the replicating cycle. Because data on tissue stages are limited to a few described species, patterns and mechanisms of (megalo-)merogony are unclear but required to better understand pathologies during haemoproteosis. In this study, we a

Haemoproteus species (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) are cosmopolitan blood parasites that affect bird fitness and health. Recent discoveries based on the application of molecular markers showed that exo-erythrocytic or tissue stages of haemoproteids damage various internal organs including the brain. However, the patterns of exo-erythrocytic development remain unclear for most of the described species. This study aimed to understand the exo-erythrocytic development of Haemoproteus parasites in naturally infected Thrush nightingales Luscinia luscinia (Muscicapidae). Infections were confirmed in

Species of Haemoproteus (Haemoproteidae, Haemosporida) are common bird pathogens. Recent molecular studies combined with histopathology research have reported development of megalomeronts of these parasites in various organs, sometimes resulting in the death of the avian host. Five Common starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were found naturally infected with Haemoproteus pastoris lineage hLAMPUR01. The parasite was identified using microscopic examination of blood films and DNA sequences. Infected bird organs were investigated histologically for (i) the presence of exo-erythrocytic stages and (ii) th

The patterns of exo-erythrocytic development remain poorly understood for most described Haemoproteus parasites. Three modes of exo-erythrocytic development have been recognized so far: Haemoproteus species that develop only meronts, only megalomeronts, and both morphotypes. The factors underlying the occurrence of these different tissue stages in certain Haemoproteus lineages remain unclear, emphasizing the need for further research on these parasites, which can cause severe disease in non-adapted avian hosts. We investigated, for the first time, the tissue merogony of Haemoproteus belopolsky

Haemoproteus (Haemoproteus) multipigmentatus n. sp. (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) was found in the endemic Galapagos dove Zenaida galapagoensis . It is described based on the morphology of its blood stages and segments of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, which can be used for molecular identification and diagnosis of this species. Haemoproteus multipigmentatus can be readily distinguished from all species of hemoproteids of the subgenus Haemoproteus , primarily due to numerous (approximately 40 on average) small pigment granules in its mature gametocytes. Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis), a migratory seabird from the Procellariidae family, is widely distributed across the Atlantic Ocean. It breeds on islands of Azores, Madeira, Canary, and Berlengas, and winters in coastal areas of South America and Africa. This species' wide habitat range contributes to pathogen exchange across global regions. Plasmodium, a genus of apicomplexan parasites causing avian malaria, affects many wild bird species worldwide. Although rare in seabirds, Plasmodium infections can significantly impact these hosts. We identified and characterized a new Plasmodium
