Microbiology of Hafnia alvei.

Hafnia alvei is a Gram-negative facultatively anaerobic bacillus that constitutes part of the human gut flora. Until recently, H. alvei strains could be mistakenly identified by conventional methods, miniaturisation or automatic systems as members of the Serratia, Escherichia, Citrobacter, Yokenella, Obesumbacterium or Salmonella genera. Consequently, molecular techniques were required for their definitive identification in the clinical laboratory. In addition, a new Hafnia species, H. paralvei, has recently appeared, which undoubtedly includes many of the strains reported in the literature as

Clinical and laboratory diagnostic characteristics and cytotoxigenic potential of Hafnia alvei and Hafnia paralvei strains.

A collection of 68 Hafnia strains previously identified to the species level by 16S rRNA gene sequencing were investigated for simple phenotypic properties that could aid in their recognition in the clinical laboratory. Four tests, including malonate utilization, fermentation of salicin and d-arabinose, and expression of β-glucosidase activity, correctly assigned each strain to either Hafnia alvei or H. paralvei. Antibiotic susceptibility profiles were generated for 35 H. alvei and H. paralvei isolates using Etest strips for 24 antibiotics. All strains were susceptible to aminoglycosides, quin

A case of bacteremia caused by Hafnia paralvei.

The genus Hafnia, a member of the Enterobacteriaceae, is widespread in nature and rarely causes human infection. We describe a case of an 85-year-old Japanese man hospitalized consequent to suspected cholecystitis, in which Hafnia sp. was recovered from the blood culture concomitantly with Enterococcus faecalis. Sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence and phenotyping with ID 32 E revealed that the recovered Hafnia sp. was considered to be Hafnia alvei genomosp. 2 (ATCC 29927), recently reclassified as Hafnia paralvei. The patient recovered uneventfully with antimicrobial therapies.

Plasmid borne virulence of Enterobacter hafniae.

The strain classified as Enterobacter hafniae has been isolated in a severe epidemy of porcine diarrhoea. Its pathogenicity has been found to be cotransmissible with resistance to oxytetracycline when the strain was grown in a mixed culture with some nonpathogenic E. hafniae strains as well as with Escherichia coli. Toxinogenity seems to be responsible for virulence of the strain.

Defect structure of yttria-stabilized hafnia nanoparticles.

High-temperature polymorphs of hafnia (HfO2) are of significant interest in electronics and fuel-cell applications, and stabilization at ambient conditions can be achieved by aliovalent substitution and nanosize effects. Y3+ stabilization of hafnia (YSH) introduces local cation disorder around charge-compensating oxygen-ion vacancies, and here we establish both the average and local structure of YSH nanoparticles using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. A range of phase-pure crystalline nanoparticles of Hf1-xYxO2-x/2 were prepared via con

Reactive arthritis secondary to Hafnia alvei enterocolitis.

Diagnosis of postenteritic reactive arthritis (ReA) is a challenge and might have a broad range of differential diagnoses. A 50-year-old man was referred to our attention because of persistent inflammatory low back pain and asymmetric oligoarthritis. The clinical history was positive for diarrhoea in the previous 3 months. Inflammatory bowel disease, Whipple and celiac diseases were carefully excluded. In addition, serology, stool cultures, biopsies from the upper gastrointestinal tract yielded negative results for infections. A presumptive diagnosis of ReA was done and a non-steroidal anti-in

Hafnia alvei, a probable cause of diarrhea in humans.

Hafnia alvei, a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae, was the only species of bacteria cultured from the stool of a 9-month-old child who was admitted with a 3-day history of watery diarrhea. The isolated strain of H. alvei failed to produce heat-labile or heat-stable enterotoxins or Shiga-like toxin I or II and did not invade HeLa cells, nor did it cause keratoconjunctivitis (determined by the Sereny test) in a guinea pig's eye. The strain, however, induced diarrhea in 8 of 12 adult rabbits with removable intestinal ties (removable intestinal tie-adult rabbit diarrhea [RITARD] assay) and i

Hafnia Alvei on a Diabetic Foot: A Case Report.

This case report highlights the unusual presence of Hafnia alvei, a gram-negative bacillus, as the causative agent in a severe diabetic foot ulcer. While diabetic foot ulcers are typically associated with gram-positive cocci, this case underscores the importance of considering atypical pathogens. The patient, a long-term diabetic, presented with a nonresponsive wound that had progressed to a severe grade 4 ulcer, despite antibiotic treatment. A multidisciplinary medical team, including infectious disease specialists, surgeons, and endocrinologists, advocated for surgical intervention, involvin

Endogenous endophthalmitis due to Salmonella arizonae and Hafnia alvei.

Enteric pathogens rarely involve organs other than those of the gastrointestinal system. We have reported the case of a woman with rheumatoid arthritis who had endogenous endophthalmitis due to Salmonella arizonae and Hafnia alvei. The infection probably resulted from the use of snake powder as a food seasoner. After appropriate intravenous, intraocular, subconjunctival, topical, and oral antibiotic therapy based on laboratory susceptibility studies, the patient's condition clinically improved, but complications resulted in therapeutic enucleation. Because of the ubiquitous nature of these and

Characteristics and local structure of hafnia-silicate-zirconate ceramic nanomixtures.

Zirconate systems having the composition 3HfO2·15SiO2·xY2O3·(82 - x)ZrO2, where x = 2, 7 and 12 mol% Y2O3, were synthesized by a sol-gel method. The analysis of X-ray diffraction data showed the presence of the t-ZrO2, m-ZrO2, m-HfO2, Y2SiO5 and Y2Si2O7 crystalline phases in a ceramic nanomixture. Spectroscopic data show that the increase of the Y2O3 content of samples determines the increase of the t-ZrO2, m-HfO2 and silicate crystalline phases. Gap energy values decrease almost linearly with increasing Y2O3 content of samples. A detailed study of XANES data does not show a significant differ

The First Reported Case of Hafnia alvei Granulomatous Mastitis in Humans.

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is an uncommon, chronic inflammatory breast disease, mostly idiopathic. Occasionally, the causative organism is isolated. It is characterized histologically by polymorph nuclear neutrophils' predominance and the absence of caseous necrosis. Idiopathic GM could be associated with other general conditions like autoimmune disorders, diabetes mellitus, and sarcoidosis. We report a case of a 41-year-old woman who presented with a left breast abscess of two weeks duration and a three-year history of intermittent attacks of painful breast swelling, which required multiple

[Hafnia alvei bacteremia with liver and muscle abscess: a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Hafnia alvei is a commensal organism of the digestive tract. It is best known as an agent of pediatric gastro-enteritis. In adults, this organism may exceptionally be responsible for extra-intestinal infections. In such cases, infections occur mainly in unusually susceptible patients, due to an underlying condition. CASE REPORT: A 69 year-old man who had recently undergone surgery for a gastric stromal tumor was admitted to hospital because of H. alvei bacteremia accompanied by liver and right iliac muscle abscesses. The course was favourable with a 60 day treatment of fluoroqui

Hafnia alvei pneumonia: a rare cause of infection in the multimorbid or immunocompromised.

Hafnia alvei is a rare, poorly understood commensal bacterium which has, on occasion, been shown to infect humans. We present two cases. The first patient presented with a 1-week history of dyspnoea, pleurisy and a productive cough, and the second with a prodrome of fatigue and night sweats. The former had a history of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the latter had a history of Crohn's disease. Both patients had underlying comorbidities and immunosuppression, but differed in presentation, radiological findings and recovery. This case series aims to remind readers of the broad

Single atoms of indium on hafnia enable superior CO2-based methanol synthesis.

Indium-zirconium oxides rank among the most selective and stable catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Yet, despite extensive research, the mechanistic origin of the exceptional role of monoclinic zirconia remains unresolved and continues to set the benchmark in the field. Here we show that monoclinic hafnia, a wide-bandgap oxide rarely explored in catalysis, can outperform this benchmark. Nanostructured indium-hafnium oxides synthesized via flame spray pyrolysis achieve up to 70% higher indium-specific methanol productivity than indium-zirconium oxides, with the largest gains observed

First report of a carbapenemase OXA-48-producing Hafnia alvei clinical isolate.

INTRODUCTION: Carbapenems are usually used in the treatment of infections caused by cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales ; however, the increase in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) has become one of the most important problems in public health. Hafnia alvei is associated with intestinal and extraintestinal infections, especially in patients with any chronic disease or some type of immunosupression. H. alvei is resistant to first-generation aminopenicillins and cephalosporins owing to the β-lactamase (Amp C) in their chromosome; the only carbapenem-resistant Hafnia strain describ

Hafnia alvei Infections: Clinical Characteristics and Therapeutic Challenges of an Uncommon Pathogen.

Hafnia alvei is a rare opportunistic pathogen of the Enterobacteriaceae family, typically regarded as a gastrointestinal commensal. However, it has been implicated in serious infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with a history of cryptogenic cirrhosis postliver transplant, complicated by sepsis and advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma under palliative care. She developed a urinary tract infection caused by Hafnia alvei and Klebsiella oxytoca, confirmed by cultures. Despite targeted antibio

Hafnia alvei Pneumonia: A Rare Cause of Infection in a Patient with COVID-19.

Herein, we describe a case report of a critically ill patient, a 48-year-old man without comorbidities admitted to the hospital with a serious type 1 (hypoxemic) respiratory insufficiency and confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. After 5 days with invasive mechanical ventilation, the patient developed a bacterial co-infection, namely a pneumonia by Hafnia alvei, requiring the last line of respiratory support: extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Subsequently, his clinical situation gradually stabilized, until he was discharged from the hospital on day 61, being accompanied in ambulatory cons
