The Electronic Structure of Zirconium and Hafnium Monochalcogenides.

High-level ab initio CCSD(T) and spin-orbit icMRCI+Q calculations were used to predict potential energy curves (PECs) for the lowest-lying states of ZrO, ZrS, HfO, and HfS. The prediction of the ground state is basis set dependent at the icMRCI+Q level for ZrO and ZrS due to the small singlet-triplet splitting between the lowest 1Σ+ and 3Δ states. CCSD(T) with a spin orbit correction predicted the 1Σ+ ground state in agreement with experiment. New all-electron basis sets were developed for Hf to improve the results over those predicted by use of effective core potentials (ECPs) that subsume th

Direct synthesis of macrodiolides via hafnium(IV) catalysis.

Efficient direct synthesis of macrodiolides via catalysis using Hf(OTf)4 is possible in high yields, forming water as the sole by-product. The first protocol for the direct synthesis of macrodiolides from equimolar mixtures of diols and dicarboxylic acids was developed (58-96%). In addition, modification of the reaction concentration allows for the synthesis of head-to-tail macrodiolides from the corresponding seco acids. The catalytic preparation of the macrodiolides using a commercially available catalyst without the need for slow addition or azeotropic condition provides an operationally si

Reduced Arene Complexes of Hafnium Supported by a Triamidoamine Ligand.

A series of hafnium complexes with a reduced arene of the general formula [K(L)][Hf(Xy-N3 N)(arene)] (Xy-N3 N={(3,5-Me2 C6 H3 )NCH2 CH2 }3 N3- , L=THF, 18-crown-6; arene=C10 H8 2- , C14 H10 2- ) mimic the chemistry of hafnium in its formal oxidation state +II. All compounds were obtained upon reduction of the chlorido complex [HfCl(Xy-N3 N)(thf)] with two equivalents of potassium naphthalenide or anthracenide. The reducing nature and the basicity of the reduced anthracene ligand were explored in the reaction of benzonitrile and azobenzene, and by deprotonation of tert-butylacetylene, respectiv

Electrochemical impacts of sheet-like hafnium phosphide and hafnium disulfide catalysts bonded with reduced graphene oxide sheets for bifunctional oxygen reactions in alkaline electrolytes.

Non-noble metal-based catalysts with efficient catalytic activities for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are critical for energy conversion devices, including fuel cells and metal-air batteries. In this work, novel hafnium phosphide-reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (HfP-rGO NS) and hafnium disulfide-reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (HfS2-rGO NS) were synthesized and investigated as bifunctional electrocatalysts for OER and ORR. The prepared HfP-rGO NS and HfS2-rGO NS catalysts showed nanosheet structures, where the HfP or HfS2 nanosheet was closely pack

Ultrathin Hafnium Oxide Integration for Two-Dimensional Functional Electronic Devices.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are considered promising candidates for next-generation electronic devices, especially field-effect transistors (FETs). However, deposition of a uniform dielectric layer on 2D materials with an inert surface is challenging. Herein, the integration of HfOx on graphene is demonstrated through simple thermal oxidation of HfS2 precursor to form a high-quality HfOx/graphene stack. The thermal treatment enables complete conversion from HfS2 into ultrathin HfOx with an atomically smooth surface and sharp interface with graphene. The transformed thin HfOx shows decent di

Cation-exchange separation of hafnium and zirconium from accompanying ions.

Hafnium and zirconium are not retained on the strongly acidic cation-exchange resin Dowex 50 from a mixture consisting of methanol and 12M nitric acid (19:1) which is 0.1M in trioctylphosphine oxide. On the other hand most other elements investigated are strongly adsorbed on the resin from this medium so that they are readily separated from hafnium and zirconium. These elements include titanium, rare earths, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, iron, cobalt, manganese and zinc. This separation technique has been found to be suitable for the separation of tracer and milligram amounts of hafniu

High-Purity, Uniform, and Spherical Hafnium Carbide Nanoparticles Derived from a Novel Amorphous Hafnium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Precursor for the Preparation of High-Performance Ceramics.

A novel amorphous Hf-MOFs precursor was successfully synthesized and converted into HfC nanoparticles via one-step pyrolysis. The effects of metal/ligand molar ratios, solvent types, and pyrolysis temperature were systematically studied. High-purity spherical HfC nanoparticles (44.30 ± 9.63 nm) were obtained at 1500 °C using a 1.5:1 metal/ligand molar ratio with mixed anhydrous ethanol/deionized water solvents. At a pyrolysis temperature of 1700 °C, the as-synthesized HfC nanoparticles possessed an exceptionally low oxygen content of 0.76%, alongside a carbon content of 6.42% that almost perfe

Hafnium oxide interface stabilization for efficient, photothermally stable perovskite solar cells.

Organic molecular layers at both hole- and electron-selective interfaces are essential for achieving high-efficiency perovskite solar cells, yet their limited photothermal stability hinders long-term device operation. We used atomic layer deposition to deposit hafnium oxide (HfOx) interlayers to stabilize these molecular interfaces under operational stress. At the NiOx/self-assembled monolayer (SAM) interface, a hydroxyl-rich, Lewis-acidic n-HfOx layer (n denotes negative fixed-charge polarity) promoted tridentate phosphonic acid coordination and enhanced SAM retention and thermal durability.

Constructing an 8-Connected Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework with Hafnium-Oxo Clusters.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) exhibit intriguing structural features with potential applications in various fields. However, constructing HOFs based on high-connectivity nodes is a challenging task. In this study, we report the synthesis of three new metal-hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (M-HOFs), Hf4-P4/n, Hf4-Fddd-1, and Hf4-Fddd-2, based on a charge-neutral tetranuclear hafnium-oxo cluster [Hf4(μ2-OH)8L8] (L = 1H-benzimidazole-2-carboxylate) as the building unit. The rigid benzimidazole-carboxylate ligand maintains the cluster's symmetry while providing hydrogen-bonding sites

Constructing pH-sensitive silica-sulfide hafnium dot nanotherapeutics for synergistically enhanced chemoradiotherapy.

Inorganic nanoparticles play important roles in cancer treatment, but the issues of biodegradable properties, and tumor penetration restricted further clinical application. Aiming at the low efficiency and toxic side effects problems existing in the current clinical treatment of cancer, a biodegradable mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) platform integrating pH-responsive drug release and synergistic chemo-radiotherapy was developed. The doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was loaded in MSNs via electrostatic interactions, with ultra-small hafnium sulfide (HfS2) nanodots were anchored to the surf

Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived Carbonyls over Hafnium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks.

A series of highly crystalline, porous, hafnium-based metal-organic frameworks (Hf-MOFs) have been shown to catalyze the transfer hydrogenation reaction of levulinic ester to produce γ-valerolactone by using isopropanol as a hydrogen donor. The results are compared with their zirconium-based counterparts. The role of the metal center in Hf-MOFs has been identified and reaction parameters optimized. NMR studies using isotopically labeled isopropanol provide evidence that the transfer hydrogenation occurs through a direct intermolecular hydrogen transfer route. The catalyst, Hf-MOF-808, can be r

Nanocomposite Scintillators Loaded With Hafnium Oxide and Phosphorescent Host and Guest for Gamma Spectroscopy.

Gamma sensitive plastic scintillators are of critical importance in the fields of nuclear nonproliferation, medical imaging, and high energy physics. However, there is often a trade-off between high light yield and high loading of high-Z components, both of which play an essential role in gamma ray detection. This work takes advantage of triplet exciton harvesting to increase gamma light yield by utilizing 1,3-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene and 9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluorene as triplet hosts to facilitate Dexter energy transfer to bis[2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato-C2,N](picolinato)iridium(III) (FIrP

Hafnium-Oxide Based Nanoplatform with Tumor Microenvironment Responsive Drug Release for Enhanced Radio-Chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: Hafnium oxide nanoparticles have been established as effective radiosensitizers, however, tumor cells often develop resistance to single-modality radiotherapy, and the tumor microenvironment (TME) poses additional limitations to treatment efficacy. To address these challenges, we fabricated a doxorubicin and manganese oxide co-loaded hafnium oxide (MD-Hf) nanoplatform for synergistic radio-chemotherapy and evaluated its antitumor performance in cellular and animal models. RESULTS: In MD-Hf nanoplatform, the HfO2 nanocrystal functions as the radiosensitizer and carrier, the Dox works

Hafnium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nanosystems Entrapping Squaraines for Efficient NIR-Responsive Photodynamic Therapy.

In this study, we present for the first time the incorporation of two distinct nonsymmetrical squaraines (SQ) into hierarchically porous Hafnium-based UiO-66 Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), each functionalized with various moieties, for application as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy. SQs are meticulously designed to feature COOH moieties for interaction with the MOF's metallic cluster and bromine atoms to enhance intersystem crossing and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Bidentate SO2 Complexes of Zirconium and Hafnium Difluorides with Highly Activated S-O Bonds.

Transition metal-SO2 complexes with different S-O bond lengths serve as ideal models for the understanding of catalytic activation of SO2 at different stages. Herein, sulfur dioxide complexes of zirconium and hafnium difluorides [MF2(O2S)] with highly activated S-O bonds were prepared in cryogenic matrixes. The structures of these complexes were identified by infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Both ZrF2(O2S) and HfF2(O2S) were predicted to have singlet ground states and nonplanar Cs geometries with the metal center coordinated by both oxygens of SO2. The much low

Iridium cluster/hafnium-porphyrin framework heterojunctions for biocatalytic ROS-scavenging and acute kidney injury alleviation.

The clinical treatments of acute kidney injury (AKI) face significant challenges from complex microenvironments caused by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and severe inflammation. Up to now, effective treatments remain scarce. In this study, we propose a versatile and effective biocatalytic heterojunction, Ir@Hf-TCPP, developed by growing iridium clusters on hafnium-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (Hf-TCPP) through a readily accessible solvothermal approach. The metal‑oxygen bonds between the Ir clusters and Hf-TCPP ensure structural stability and adequate exposure of the surface a

Electric field-enhanced trace hafnium detection in zirconium using 532 nm and 1064 nm LIBS: A comparative study.

In this study, the detection of hafnium in a zirconium matrix using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) enhanced by an externally applied electric field under both 532 nm and 1064 nm laser excitations is reported for the first time to our knowledge. The impact of laser pulse energy, delay time, excitation wavelength and the strength of externally applied DC electric field were systematically explored to improve the limit of detection (LOD) and signal reliability. Under optimized conditions (100 mJ & 1 μs), the 532 nm excitation outperformed the 1064 nm through improved laser-plasma cou

Computational Investigation of Hafnium Carbide MXenes (Hf3C2Tx) for Ultra-Sensitive Detection of Targeted Volatile Organic Compounds.

Early detection of gastric cancer (GC) is critical for improving patient survival rates, yet the current diagnostic techniques are invasive and costly. Efficient detection of the targeted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in patients' exhaled breath could be a promising method for timely GC diagnosis. In this study, we employ first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the sensing potential of hafnium carbide MXenes (Hf3C2Tx; Tx = O, S, F) toward GC-related VOCs. van der Waals corrected simulations reveal relatively weak and unsuitable adsorption energies (Eads

Thermal-Budget-Decoupled Integration of Freestanding Hafnium-Based Ferroelectric Dielectrics for van der Waals Memory Transistors.

Ferroelectric memories have emerged as promising candidates for nonvolatile memory and neuromorphic computing owing to their capability for direct channel modulation through polarization switching. However, the high thermal budget required for synthesis and post-annealing processes hampers scalable integration and degrades interfacial quality. Here, we present a freestanding hafnium-based ferroelectric strategy that enables the fabrication of high-performance top-gate ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FeFETs) on van der Waals (vdW) MoS2 channels at low temperatures without post-annealing
