[Vocational rehabilitation of psychologically handicapped patients at halfway houses].

In 131 psychically handicapped patients the influence of rehabilitation in housing communes on the working performance is studied. The results are compared to that of a control group. With the average stay of three years in a housing commune the hours worked increase by 22% to reach 78% of the working time granted by comparison to the control group. On the working axis a shift is observed towards comparatively higher demands in a sheltered workshop compared to the demands of occupational therapy only in the sheltered milieu.

Alcoholic patients' decisions about halfway houses. What they say, what they do.

Because of the important role of halfway houses in the recovery of many alcoholic patients, patients' attitudes toward accepting placement in a halfway house were studied in a state hospital's alcohol rehabilitation program. Verbal intentions to accept or not to accept placement were measured at the beginning and again toward the end of the program sequence. Both assessments showed a strong correlation with the patients' actual behaviors. The relationships between intentions and ultimate choices were moderated both by the amount of time between observations and, independently of the passage of

The Effects of Halfway Houses on Criminal Recidivism: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Halfway houses operate as a form of community supervision, offering a unique opportunity for individuals who have offended to receive housing, support, and other resources to aid in navigating the challenges of re-entry from closed custody. Despite being controversial in the eyes of the public, they have long been viewed by stakeholders as a worthwhile intervention. However, existing literature presents mixed findings on their utility. The current study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of nine studies providing 17 effect sizes on the effects of halfway houses on recidivism. Findi

Effects of halfway house placement on retention of patients in substance abuse aftercare.

One hundred twenty-four male veterans were enrolled in the Birmingham VAMC Outpatient Substance Abuse Clinic (OSAC) aftercare program following inpatient treatment for alcohol, cocaine, or mixed alcohol-cocaine abuse/dependence. Forty-two of the patients were concurrently admitted to a nearby halfway house (HH) while the remaining 82 patients made community-based (CB) living arrangements. Chi-square analysis showed the two groups were matched, p > .05, in regard to age, race, marital status, presenting problem, and referral source. The CB group experienced significantly, p < .05, higher early

[Rehabilitation of psychiatric patients in the halfway house--a 10-year retrospective study].

In a period of ten years 159 residents were admitted to a transitional home. 90% of them were diagnosed as chronic schizophrenics with a marked psychic and social handicap. With an average age of 28.7 years and a mean duration of illness of 6.8 years most of the patients had been hospitalized several times; 95% had no job, lived on social assistance or were invalidity pensioners. There was poor success in vocational rehabilitation (22%). Better results were seen in solving the housing problems, showing a clear-cut tendency to move from the family of origin into protected group homes or indepen

"Halfway Independent": Experiences of formerly homeless adults living in permanent supportive housing.

Permanent supportive housing (PSH), which combines affordable public housing with social services, has become the dominant model in the United States for providing housing to formerly homeless people. PSH has been effective in reducing re-entry to homelessness, yet has shown limited evidence of improving formerly homeless individuals' mental health and quality of life. This study aimed to understand the lived experiences of formerly homeless adults' adjustment to tenancy in PSH, with a focus on how living in PSH has affected their meaningful activity and social engagement. Based on a phenomeno

Hostel placement of mentally handicapped patients in Northern Ireland.

All patients discharged to hostels from an 800 bed hospital for the mentally handicapped were studied over a 12 year period. Those whose placement was successful were compared with those who returned to the hospital. Youth and early institutional upbringing were associated with failure of placement. Twelve specific problems were identified by hostel staff and of these aggression, psychosis, absconding and interpersonal difficulties were associated with failure. A worrying trend was that the more modern hostels had a lower success rate and a higher proportion of problems than those which were o

Six-month length of stay associated with better recovery outcomes among residents of sober living houses.

Background: Sober living houses are designed for individuals in recovery to live with others in recovery, yet no guidelines exist for the time needed in a sober living house to significantly impact outcomes. Objectives: To examine how the length of stay in sober living houses is related to substance use and related outcomes, focusing on early discontinuation (length of stay less than six months) and stable residence (length of stay six months or longer). Methods: Baseline and 12-month data were collected from 455 sober living house residents (36% female). Crisis-oriented residential treatment as an alternative to hospitalization.

The La Posada program, a short-term alternative to hospitalization for acutely disturbed chronic patients, combines crisis intervention techniques with techniques developed in halfway houses to enhance independent functioning and counteract regressive, dependent behavior. Highly structured days involving a variety of approaches including group and individual therapy, therapeutic activities, expectations of appropriate behavior, and responsibility for ongoing treatment enable most clients to leave the program within nine days and to begin outpatient and day treatment before discharge. The progr

[Un chez-soi d'abord: a recovery-oriented approach].

The "Un chez-soi d'abord" scheme aims to provide independent housing for homeless people diagnosed with psychosis. The "tenants" are supported by a medical-social team, who come to meet them on a weekly basis to help them access and maintain their home. While psychiatric pathology is taken into account, the approach is essentially focused on recovery. The challenge is to support people in their life choices and to establish a bond of trust, while ensuring good coordination and quality partnership work with external players.

Stopping the "revolving door": "Zeida Laderech," a unique rehabilitation house for young adults with severe and enduring eating disorders.

A failure to maintain improvement achieved during acute treatment, followed by a "revolving door syndrome," is a common phenomenon in eating disorders (EDs). As a result, many patients develop a chronic course that is difficult to treat. To target these difficulties, we established a novel rehabilitation treatment model in Israel for patients with severe and enduring EDs, based on the "recovery theory" in mental health treatment. This paper describes the process of conceiving this model and specifies the components of this rehabilitation house, "Zeida Laderech" (Provisions for the Journey), th

Resident and house manager perceptions of social environments in sober living houses: Associations with length of stay.

AIMS: Studies have shown persons living in recovery homes for drug and alcohol problems make significant, sustained improvements. However, there is limited information about factors associated with outcomes. This study examined how perceptions of social environment of one type of recovery home, sober living houses (SLHs), were associated with length of stay (LOS). METHODS: SLH residents and their house managers (N = 416) completed the recovery home environment scale (RHES) that assessed social model recovery characteristics and the community-oriented program evaluation scale (CPES) that evalu

Community integration of adults with psychiatric disabilities and histories of homelessness.

This study tests components of Wong and Solomon's (2002, Mental Health Services Research, 4(2), 13-28) model of community integration, identifying both the dimensions and predictors of integration. It evaluates community integration among adults with psychiatric disabilities assigned randomly to receive either independent scatter-site apartments with the Housing First approach (experimental) or services as usual (control). Factor analysis supported a definition of community integration that includes psychological, physical, and social domains, but also suggested the existence of another factor

Oxford recovery housing: Length of stay correlated with improved outcomes for women previously involved with the criminal justice system.

BACKGROUND: Housing plays a crucial role in providing resources for and aiding an individual's reentry into the community following incarceration and substance use treatment. As such, this study examined the influence of recovery homes on a sample of former female substance-using women with criminal justice involvement. METHODS: Two hundred women who had been involved with the criminal justice system within the preceding 2 years were recruited from multiple sites in metropolitan Chicago. These women were assigned to either 1 of 2 conditions: Oxford House (OH) recovery homes or usual aftercare

Housing First for long-term shelter dwellers with psychiatric disabilities in a suburban county: a four-year study of housing access and retention.

Housing First is an effective intervention that ends and prevents homelessness for individuals with severe mental illness and co-occurring addictions. By providing permanent, independent housing without prerequisites for sobriety and treatment, and by offering support services through consumer-driven Assertive Community Treatment teams, Housing First removes some of the major obstacles to obtaining and maintaining housing for consumers who are chronically homeless. In this study, consumers diagnosed with severe mental illness and who had the longest histories of shelter use in a suburban count
