Biomineralization of carbonates by Halobacillus trueperi in solid and liquid media with different salinities.

We investigated the precipitation of carbonates by Halobacillus trueperi in both solid and liquid media at different salt concentrations and different magnesium/calcium ratios. H. trueperi precipitated at all assayed salt concentrations. When salt concentration increased, the quantity and the size of bioliths decreased and the time required increased. The precipitated minerals (determined by X-ray diffraction) were calcite, magnesium calcite and monohydrocalcite in variable proportions depending on the salinity and the physical state of the medium; the magnesium content of the magnesium calcit

Inhibition of quorum sensing-controlled virulence factors with natural substances and novel protease, obtained from Halobacillus karajensis.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, a challenge in clinical treatment has developed due to bacterial resistance to antibiotics. One of the new mechanisms against infections is virulence factor inhibition. Many virulence factors are controlled by quorum sensing pathways such as biofilm formation and pyocyanin production. The goal of the present study was to investigate the effect of an obligate halophilic bacterial strain on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, due to its halo-tolerant substances and enzymes. METHODS: The effect of Halobacillus karajensis on bacterial growth and produc

Halophilic plant growth-promoting bacterial consortium reshapes soil microbiota to enhance salinity tolerance, antioxidant defense, and yield in Vigna mungo L.

Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress that severely restricts crop productivity by disrupting ionic balance, inducing osmotic stress, and promoting oxidative damage. Black gram (Vigna mungo L.), an important pulse crop, is highly sensitive to salinity, resulting in reduced growth, physiological performance, and yield. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a compatible multi-strain HPGPB consortium comprising MKM3 (Halobacillus marinus), MKM4 (Halobacillus halophilus), and MKM11 (Halobacillus halophilus) in enhancing salinity tolerance in two black gram varieties (VBN8 and VBN11) under

Bacterial growth at the high concentrations of magnesium sulfate found in martian soils.

The martian surface environment exhibits extremes of salinity, temperature, desiccation, and radiation that would make it difficult for terrestrial microbes to survive. Recent evidence suggests that martian soils contain high concentrations of MgSO₄ minerals. Through warming of the soils, meltwater derived from subterranean ice-rich regolith may exist for an extended period of time and thus allow the propagation of terrestrial microbes and create significant bioburden at the near surface of Mars. The current report demonstrates that halotolerant bacteria from the Great Salt Plains (GSP) of Okl

Exploration of extremophilic microorganisms for production and applications of exopolysaccharides.

Extremophilic microorganisms live in extreme environmental conditions such as high or low temperature, high or low pH, high concentration of salt and accordingly are classified as thermophilic, psychrophilic, alkaliphilic, acidophilic and halophilic respectively. They adapt themselves to the extreme conditions by producing novel biomolecules like heat shock proteins, cold active enzymes, compatible solutes and exopolysaccharides. Extremophilic microorganisms maintain their cellular integrity with the help of exopolysaccharide (EPS) which constitutes slime or a hydrated matrix that keeps the ce

Bacillaceae-derived peptide antibiotics since 2000.

Members of the Bacillaceae family, including Bacillus spp., Brevibacillus spp., Paenibacillus spp., Aneurinibacillus sp., and Halobacillus sp., are an important source of structurally diverse classes of short peptides of ∼ 30 residues or fewer possessing peculiar and rapid killing activity against various pathogens. Additionally, many have unique structures that enhance resistance to hydrolysis by proteases, and these are ideal therapeutic tools and potential alternatives to current antibiotics. The need for novel antibiotic lead compounds is urgent, and this review summarises 119 Bacillaceae

Biodegradation of benzene homologues in contaminated sediment of the East China Sea.

This study focused on acclimating a microbial enrichment to biodegrade benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) in a wide range of salinity. The enrichment degraded 120 mg/L toluene within 5d in the presence of 2M NaCl or 150 mg/L toluene within 7d in the presence of 1-1.5M NaCl. PCR-DGGE (polymerase chain reaction-denatured gradient gel electrophoresis) profiles demonstrated the dominant species in the enrichments distributed between five main phyla: Gammaproteobacteria, Sphingobacteriia, Prolixibacter, Flavobacteriia and Firmicutes. The Marinobacter, Prolixibacter, Balneola, Zunongw

[Bacterial conversion of sulfur-and phosphorous-compounds and microbial diversity in sediments from a near-shore marine-cultural region].

The H2S-producing bacteria and the phosphorous-cycling bacteria in sediments from near-shore marine-cultural region were investigated. Results indicate that the bacterial H2S production in aerobic condition is the dominating process to produce H2S in the sediment of cultural pond. The total counts of H2S-producing bacteria utilizing cysteine and Na2S2O3 were 1.6 x 10(6) and 4.35 x 10(3) cells g(-1) respectively. The counts of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the sediments were very little, only 2.5 x 10(1) g(-1). Further results show that the bacterial counts of decomposing lecithin and secreting

Exploring the anti-quorum sensing potential of sea anemone bacterial symbionts from Samalona Island (Spermonde Archipelago) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Vannamei shrimp is a promising aquaculture commodity, but presence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria in cultivation poses a challenge to increasing productivity. Quorum sensing allows bacteria to regulate pathogenicity based on population density. The aim of this study were to screen antiquorum sensing agents that can inhibit bacterial communication, thereby reducing pathogen virulence. The method used in the screening process goes through several stages, such as isolation of anemone symbiont bacteria, screening for inhibition of violacein and antibiofilm production, as well as molecular ide

Postbiotics of Marine Origin and Their Therapeutic Application.

The increase in antibiotic-resistant pathogens has prompted the search for alternative therapies. One such alternative is the use of probiotic microorganisms. However, growing interest is now turning toward postbiotics-non-viable microbial cells and/or their components or metabolites-that can confer health benefits without the risks associated with administering live microbes. Marine ecosystems, characterized by extreme and diverse environmental conditions, are a promising yet underexplored source of microorganisms capable of producing unique postbiotic compounds. These include bioactive pepti

Beyond Archaea: The Table Salt Bacteriome.

Commercial table salt is a condiment with food preservative properties by decreasing water activity and increasing osmotic pressure. Salt is also a source of halophilic bacteria and archaea. In the present research, the diversity of halotolerant and halophilic microorganisms was studied in six commercial table salts by culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques. Three table salts were obtained from marine origins: Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean (Ibiza Island), and Odiel marshes (supermarket marine salt). Other salts supplemented with mineral and nutritional ingredients were also used:
