BACKGROUND: Hamamelidaceae, a family within the core eudicots and the order Saxifragales, represents a characteristic lineage of the East Asian flora and holds considerable ecological and economic importance. However, molecular phylogenetic studies based on single or a few genetic loci have failed to resolve certain phylogenetic relationships among species, genera, and tribes within the family. Besides, less knowledge on the chloroplast genome evolution of Hamamelidaceae has known to us so far. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: In this study, we first sequenced and de novo assembled the complete chlorop

Hamamelidaceae, within the order Saxifragales, comprises 27 genera and approximately 120 species. The family has a pantropical and temperate distribution across the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Previous molecular investigations, constrained by limited taxon sampling and inadequate genetic markers, supported a five-subfamily classification system. However, these studies predominantly focused on Asian taxa, resulting in poor resolution of the evolutionary relationships among American, African, and Australian genera. To address these sampling gaps, we employed near-complete generic samp

BACKGROUND: Parrotiopsis jacquemontiana (Decne) Rehder. is locally used for skin infections and in wound healing. In this study we have evaluated methanol extract of its leaves and derived fractions against the clinical multi-drug resistant bacterial strains.
METHODS: P. jacquemontiana leaves powder extracted with 95% methanol (PJM) and fractionated in escalating polarity of solvents; n-hexane (PJH), chloroform (PJC), ethyl acetate (PJE), n-butanol (PJB) and the remaining as aqueous fraction (PJA). Clinical as well as environmental 19 bacterial strains and 8 fungal strains were screened for m

Virginian witch hazel (WH; Hamamelis virginiana L.; family: Hamamelidaceae) is a North American plant that is used traditionally to treat a variety of ailments, including bacterial infections. Solvents of varying polarity (water, methanol, ethyl acetate, hexane and chloroform) were used to prepare extracts from this plant. Resuspensions of each extract in an aqueous solution were tested for growth-inhibitory activity against a panel of bacteria (including three antibiotic-resistant strains) using agar disc diffusion and broth microdilution assays. The ethyl acetate, hexane and chloroform extra

BACKGROUND: Semiliquidambar cathayensis is a traditional medicinal plant and endemic species in China. Its roots, branches, leaves, bark, and nectar are known to have therapeutic effects against rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar muscle strain, and several other diseases. However, limited knowledge regarding the molecular properties of S. cathayensis highlights the need for further research in order to elucidate the underlying pathways governing the synthesis of its active ingredients and regulation of its accumulation processes.
METHODS: We conducted transcriptome sequencing of the leaf, stem and

Although extracts from Hamamelis bark have long been used in therapy of skin diseases and in cosmetic formulas there are only few pharmacological investigations verifying the activity of distinct Hamamelis bark constituents. Therefore two major classes of constituents, namely polymeric proanthocyanidins and polysaccharides were isolated from Hamamelis bark and tested concerning their influence on proliferation and differentiation of cultured human keratinocytes. While the polysaccharide fraction, consisting mainly of arabans and arabinogalactans, did not effect human keratinozytes, the proanth

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sweetgum, Styrax liquidus (Turkish sweetgum) is a resinous exudate obtained from the wounded barks of Liquidambar orientalis Miller tree which belongs to Altingiaceae (Hamamelidaceae). The plant material has been used for the treatment of peptic ulcer symptoms in Turkish folk medicine since centuries. In order to evaluate the claimed activity, we studied the anti-ulcerogenic effect of Styrax liquidus by using an in vivo anti-ulcerogenic activity model and to determine the chemical composition of the balsam.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anti-ulcerogenic effects of the

CONTEXT: Sweetgum oil (SO) obtained from the Liquidambar orientalis Mill (Hamamelidaceae) tree has been used in Turkish folk medicine for centuries as an antiulcerigenic. Some studies have reported the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of SO; however, its effect on hepatic and oxidative stress complications is still unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the hepatoprotective effect and the antioxidant role of SO against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) toxicity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experiment included control, CCl4, SO, and CCl4 + SO treatment groups. Control and SO group ra

Staphylococcal and streptococcal species trigger a wide variety of infections involving epithelial tissues. Virginian witch hazel (WH; Hamamelis virginiana L.; family: Hamamelidaceae) is a plant that has been used traditionally by Native Americans to treat a variety of skin conditions. Extracts from the leaves were examined for their inhibitory effects on these bacterial species. Solvents of different polarity (water, methanol, ethyl acetate, hexane and chloroform) were used to prepare extracts from WH leaves, and the aqueous resuspensions were screened for antibacterial activities using disc

Parrotia subaequalis, an endangered Tertiary relict tree native to China and a member of the Hamamelidaceae family, is one of several host plant species in this family that exhibit unique ecological habits, such as gall formation. Tree galls are the results of complex interactions between gall-inducing insects and their host plant organs. The formation of galls may serve to protect other regions of the plant from potential damage, often through the production of phytoalexins. In this study, a preliminary investigation was carried out on the metabolites of the 90% MeOH extract derived from the

A method for the separation and quantification of three flavonoids and one isocoumarin by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been developed and validated. Four constituents present in a crude ethanolic extract of the flowers of Coryloposis coreana Uyeki, were analyzed. Bergenin, quercetin, quercitrin and isosalipurposide were used as calibration standards. In the present study, an excellent linearity was obtained with an r² higher than 0.999. The chromatographic peaks showed good resolution. In combination with other validation data, including precision, specificit

The current study aimed at exploring hepatoprotective potential of Parrotiopsis jacquemontiana leaves methanol extract (PJM) in rat. PJM constituted of significant amount of total phenolic and total flavonoid content. PJM and ethyl acetate fraction (PJE) exhibited strong antioxidant potential (DPPH, hydroxyl ion, nitric oxide, iron chelating, β-carotene, reducing power and phosphomolybdate assay) in comparison to other extracts. CCl4 toxicity displayed significant (p<0.05) increase in level of TBARS, H2O2, nitrite while a decrease in SOD, CAT, POD and GSH in liver samples of CCl4 treated group

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Oil extracted from Parrotiopsis jacquemontiana stem traditionally used for wound healing, body aches and dermatitis. In this study we have evaluated oil for its phytoconstituents, antioxidant, antimicrobial and wound healing activities.
METHODS: Phytochemical characterization of oil was determined by standard qualitative procedures, gas chromatography mass spectrometry technique (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR). The in vitro antioxidant aptitude was determined by scavenging of DPPH radical, hydroxyl ion, nitric oxide, inhibition of β
