An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an uncommon benign bone lesion that principally occurs in long bones and in the vertebral column. The appearance of ABC in carpal bones is very rare. We report a case of ABC that occurred in the hamate bone.

Osseous injuries to the ulnar aspect of the carpus are increasing in frequency because of greater participation in sporting activities. Hamate body fractures are subdivided into coronal, sagittal oblique, proximal pole, and medial tuberosity fractures. Successful treatment of coronal fractures requires identification and treatment of associated disruption or instability of the ulnar 2 carpometacarpal joints. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) show a predilection for the metaphysis of the long bones and the vertebrae and seldom involve the carpal bones. We present a case of an ABC in the left hamate of an 18-year-old man. Curettage and bone grafting were performed, and, because destruction of the cortex was extensive, the hamate was excised. At 3-year follow-up, the wrist was stable.

We report a rare case of simultaneous dislocations of the hamate and scaphoid in an 18-year-old boy. Despite the extensive damage to the wrist joint, the functional results of open reduction and suture of intercarpal ligaments have been satisfactory, without carpal instability and degenerative osteoarthritis.

The authors present two cases of giant cell tumor of the hamate bone. The symptoms and signs were similar in both cases: pain, mild inflammatory changes, and localized swelling. The radiographic picture included lacunar osteolysis with interruption of the cortex in one case, intact cortex but more expansive lysis of the cancellous bone in the other. The findings of greatest interest were constituted by the extreme rareness of the localization, problems related to differential diagnosis, long-term follow-up in one case (20 years) and the different methods of treatment used.

A patient sustained multiple injuries during a road traffic accident, including closed palmar luxation of the lunate together with dislocation of the triquetrum and hamulus of the hamate bone. Initially the injury was treated closed, but redislocation necessitated closed reduction and stabilisation with K-wires. Three years later movement was painless and slightly restricted despite persisting palmar dislocation of the lunate and triquetral bones as well as ulnar translocation.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) rarely metastasizes to the carpal bones. We describe a 43-year-old woman with a history of RCC who presented with ulnar-sided wrist pain. Imaging demonstrated complete osteolytic destruction of the hamate. Treatment consisted of excision of the hamate, intralesional curettage, cement reconstruction, and internal fixation to the adjacent carpal bones and the fourth and fifth metacarpals. Injury to the hamate can result in significant functional impairment and a negative impact on quality of life. Fracture of the body of the hamate is rare. A case is reported where a crushing injury produced disruption of the carpus and a compartment syndrome of wrist and forearm. The median nerve escaped compression by the dorsal decompression produced by the injury. The fracture was fixed with wires and a good recovery followed.

BACKGROUND: Isolated complete dislocation of the hamate bone is a rare wrist injury. Only 22 cases have been reported in the literature. Four of them were associated with nerve injury, but it is a pity that the causes of ulnar nerve injury had never been deeply analyzed. In the case report, it was stated that the ulnar nerve injury was caused by both displacement of uncinate bone and change of position of transverse carpal ligament. The complete dislocation of the hamate bone is mostly caused by direct force, often accompanied by tears of the surrounding ligaments.

OBJECTIVE: The fractured base of the middle phalanx was reconstructed in 13 patients using an osteochondral transplant from the carpometacarpal joint surface of the hamate bone. The goal was to restore joint stability with preservation of mobility. Indications were acute and missed isolated destruction of the palmar middle phalanx base ≥ 30 %. Contraindications were destruction of the head of the proximal phalanx, advanced chondropathy of the head of the proximal phalanx, and extensive soft tissue injury with loss of skin coverage for the proximal interphalangeal joint.

Two cases of rupture of the flexor tendons of the little finger associated with a fracture of the hook of the hamate bone are presented. The preoperative diagnosis had not been made.
