Exploring the environmental distribution of the oyster parasite Haplosporidium costale.

The protozoan parasite Haplosporidium costale is known to occur in the USA where it has been associated with sharp seasonal mortality of the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica since the 1960's. In 2019, the parasite was detected for the first time in the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas in France in the context of light mortality and was subsequently detected in archived material collected since 2008. This detection raised several questions regarding the ability of the parasite to survive in the ecosystem and the potential involvement of other species in its life cycle. To answer these questio

First report of Bonamia ostreae in wild flat oysters (Ostrea denselamellosa) from the west coast of Korea: Molecular and histopathological confirmation.

Bonamia ostreae is a protozoan parasite of significant concern in oyster aquaculture due to its impact on flat oyster species. In this study, we screened 30 wild flat oysters (Ostrea denselamellosa) collected from the western coastal region of South Korea for B. ostreae infection using two molecular assays. Species-specific BOSTRE-F/R primers targeting the ITS region detected 14/30 (46.67 %) positive samples, while Bonamia genus-specific Bo/Boas primers targeting the SSU rRNA region yielded 19/30 (63.33 %) positives. Although the higher detection rate with Bo/Boas primers raised the possibilit

First Report of Haplosporidium edule Infection in the Olive-Green Cockle (Cerastoderma glaucum) from the Northern Adriatic Sea: Expanding Host Range and Geographic Distribution.

Haplosporidium edule is a haplosporidian parasite originally described in the common edible cockle (Cerastoderma edule) along the European Atlantic coast. In this study, we report the first detection of H. edule in the olive-green cockle (Cerastoderma glaucum) from the northern Adriatic Sea, representing both a novel host record and a new geographic occurrence. During a cross-sectional study conducted in May 2019, 90 C. glaucum specimens were collected from three lagoon sites in northeastern Italy. Histological examination of soft tissues revealed haplosporidian developmental stages, including

Genetic detection and discrimination of closely related oyster pathogens for biosecurity and shellfish stock management.

Disease outbreaks among shellfish cause significant declines in both wild fisheries and aquaculture production globally. In Aotearoa New Zealand, a long history of flat oyster infections by the haplosporidian parasite Bonamia exitiosa has influenced fishery dynamics in the Foveaux Strait. B. ostreae, which causes high host mortality, was detected in both wild and farmed oysters in the Marlborough Sounds in 2015 and at Stewart Island in 2017, prompting the development of rapid diagnostic tests with high sensitivity and specificity that can be used to simultaneously monitor both Bonamia species.

Diversity of Ascetosporeans Associated With Feather Hydroids in New Caledonia.

Ascetosporea is a group of parasitic protists within Endomyxa that primarily infect marine invertebrates and can cause serious damage to fishery resources such as oysters and prawns. Although approximately 50 species have been formally described, environmental DNA (eDNA) studies suggest that their diversity remains largely underestimated, with many lineages yet to be discovered. Their ecological roles and host ranges are also poorly understood, partly because no complete life cycle has been elucidated, likely due to the difficulty of maintaining live cells in laboratory conditions. In this stu

Current concepts review - fractures in the region of the elbow.

Elbow injuries continue to rise with increased athletic activity and life expectancy. Knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics of this sophisticated joint, various injury patterns, and the implication of injury to the static and dynamic stabilizers will result in improvement in specific diagnosis, and therapy. The surgical treatment of trauma to the adult elbow has evolved rapidly in recent years and many useful concepts and techniques have been established. This paper reviews the published scientific data and current opinion available to guide patient care.

Freshwater Haplosporidian Diversity Associated With Invasive Non-Native Bivalves in the River Thames, Including Haplosporidium raabei Infecting Dreissena polymorpha.

Haplosporidians are protistan parasites of aquatic invertebrates. Described here is the first report of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) parasite Haplosporidium raabei in the River Thames, London, UK. The prevalence of this protist in the upper tidal Thames, Richmond, was higher than previously reported in other studies from the UK and mainland Europe of infected D. polymorpha populations, with molecular detection of H. raabei DNA in all D. polymorpha specimens collected. Also reported is the molecular detection (DNA and RNA) of H. raabei in other invasive Thames bivalves: the Asian cla

Real-Time PCR based test for the early diagnosis of Haplosporidium pinnae affecting fan mussel Pinna nobilis.

Noble pen shell or fan mussel, Pinna nobilis Linnaeus (1758), protected since 1992, was incorporated into the Spanish Catalogue of Threatened Species (Category: Vulnerable, Royal Decree 139/2011). The status is presently in the process of being catalogued as critically endangered, pending approval by Spanish Government (https://www.mapama.gob.es/es/biodiversidad/participacion-publica/Borrador_OM_situacion_critica.aspx). The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) alerted the countries of the Mediterranean basin to the "emergent situation" due to serious mortality events suffe
