With an apparent increase of harmful algal blooms (HABs) worldwide, healthcare providers, public health personnel and coastal managers are struggling to provide scientifically-based appropriately-targeted HAB outreach and education. Since 1998, the Florida Poison Information Center-Miami, with its 24 hour/365 day/year free Aquatic Toxins Hotline (1-888-232-8635) available in several languages, has received over 25,000 HAB-related calls. As part of HAB surveillance, all possible cases of HAB-related illness among callers are reported to the Florida Health Department. This pilot study evaluated

Harmful algal blooms (HAB) have become a major health concern worldwide, not just to humans that consume and recreate on contaminated waters, but also to the fauna that inhabit the environments surrounding affected areas. HABs contain heterotrophic bacteria, cyanobacterial lipopolysaccharide, and cyanobacterial toxins such as microcystins, that can cause severe toxicity in many aquatic species as well as bioaccumulation within various organs. Thus, the possibility of trophic transference of this toxin through the food chain has potentially important health implications for other organisms in t

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), denoted by the excessive growth or 'bloom' of cyanobacteria, have increased in frequency, duration, and intensity worldwide over the past decades, primarily due to the rise in global temperature and nutrient enrichment. The blooms of cyanobacteria release various HAB toxins, with the cyclic heptapeptide microcystin-LR (MC-LR) as the most prevalent and well-characterized. Evidence suggests that exposure to HAB toxins poses significant risks to female reproductive health. Herein, we summarized current knowledge on the female reproductive impacts of MC-LR and other HA

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) cause severe economic and environmental impacts, including hypoxic events and the production of toxic and off-flavor compounds. Chemical treatments, such as copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O), are often used to mitigate the damaging effects of algal blooms. However, treatment effects are usually short-lived leading to waterbodies requiring repeated CuSO4·5H2O applications to control persistent algal blooms, particularly in highly eutrophic systems, such as aquaculture ponds or small agricultural impoundments. We hypothesized phytoplankton communities routinely

The Earth and the oceans have warmed significantly over the past four decades, providing evidence that the Earth is undergoing long-term climate change. Increasing temperatures and changing rainfall patterns have been documented. Cyanobacteria have a long evolutionary history, with their first occurrence dating back at least 2.7 billion years ago. Cyanobacteria often dominated the oceans after past mass extinction events. They evolved under anoxic conditions and are well adapted to environmental stress including exposure to UV, high solar radiation and temperatures, scarce and abundant nutrien

Suspended algae, or phytoplankton, are the prime source of organic matter supporting food webs in freshwater ecosystems. Phytoplankton productivity is reliant on adequate nutrient supplies; however, increasing rates of nutrient supply, much of it manmade, fuels accelerating primary production or eutrophication. An obvious and problematic symptom of eutrophication is rapid growth and accumulations of phytoplankton, leading to discoloration of affected waters. These events are termed blooms. Blooms are a prime agent of water quality deterioration, including foul odors and tastes, deoxygenation o

Human exposure to naturally occurring marine toxins has been associated with a range of neurobehavioral abnormalities. The toxins are produced by harmful algal blooms (HABs) and are typically contracted through seafood consumption. The primary target of many of the HAB toxins is the neurologic system, and the neurobehavioral symptoms associated with the HAB illnesses have influenced public health policy. The HAB-related illnesses most frequently linked to neuropsychological disturbance are Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning, Ciguatera Fish Poisoning, and Possible Estuarine Associated Syndrome, which

The first recorded micro-algae bloom in Chinese coastal waters dates back to 1933 and was caused by a mixture of Noctiluca scintillans and Skeletonema costatum sensu lato along the Zhejiang coast (the East China Sea). While well-documented harmful algal blooms (HABs) appeared to be extremely scarce from the 1950s to 1990, both the frequency and intensity have been reportedly increasing since 1990. Among them, the fish-killing HABs, mainly caused by Karenia mikimotoi, Karlodinium digitatum, Karlodinium veneficum, Margalefidinium polykrikoides, and Heterocapsa spp., have intensified. Karenia mik

In environmental ecosystems, vitamin concentrations are often exceedingly low, and auxotrophy, or reliance on exogenous vitamins or vitamin precursors, is widespread. We show here that the widespread harmful algal bloom (HAB) species Microcystis aeruginosa, threatening freshwater aquatic ecosystems globally, releases a complex mixture of thiamin antivitamins, including bacimethrin and methoxythiamin, which induce thiamin deficiency in the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Putative biosynthetic genes for bacimethrin were upregulated in M. aeruginosa when grown in co-culture, resulting

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) have the potential to adversely affect public health through the production of toxins such as microcystins, which consist of numerous molecularly distinct congeners. Microcystins have been observed in the atmosphere after emission from freshwater lakes, but little is known about the health effects of inhaling microcystins and the factors contributing to microcystin aerosolization. This study quantified total microcystin concentrations in water and aerosol samples collected around Grand Lake St. Marys (GLSM), Ohio. Microcystin concentrations in water

Here we summarize the current knowledge on the transfer and accumulation of harmful algal bloom (HAB)-related toxins in cephalopods (octopods, cuttlefishes and squids). These mollusks have been reported to accumulate several HAB-toxins, namely domoic acid (DA, and its isomers), saxitoxin (and its derivatives) and palytoxin (and palytoxin-like compounds) and, therefore, act as HAB-toxin vectors in marine food webs. Coastal octopods and cuttlefishes store considerably high levels of DA (amnesic shellfish toxin) in several tissues, but mainly in the digestive gland (DG)--the primary site of diges

On May 11, 2020, five surfers drowned after asphyxiation in a massive foam bank near the Dutch coast. We present a detailed account of the event and an examination of factors that govern local foam events, that are traditionally caused by Phaeocystis globosa (Prymnesiophyceae). The data support the hypothesis that the foam originated from a Phaeocystis bloom which if correct would make this accident the first report of human fatalities due to a harmful algal bloom in The Netherlands, and the first globally due to a Phaeocystis bloom. The rarity of massive foam banks and the absence of local re

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are pervasive in freshwater and marine waters requiring advances in monitoring, prevention and control of active blooms. Prevention through interception of nutrient runoff that feed HABs is critical to reducing future impacts. This research provides a logical convergence of complementary goals of mitigating the severity of HABs and increasing beneficial use of dredged sediment conveniently sourced from Confined Disposal Facilities (CDFs). This work innovates use of additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, to generate porous, geometrically complex sediment struct

With the intensification of global climate change and human activities, the frequent occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) poses threats to aquaculture, coastal tourism, and other industries. The demand for HAB mitigation has shifted from algal removal to multifunctional approaches including algal removal, toxin reduction, and eco-environmental regulation. As an efficient and environmentally friendly method for HAB mitigation, the modified clay (MC) technology has made significant progress in theory, technological innovation, and standardized application in recent years. Harmful algal blooms (HAB) are recurrent phenomena in northern Europe along the coasts of the Baltic Sea, Kattegat-Skagerrak, eastern North Sea, Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. These HABs have caused occasional massive losses for the aquaculture industry and have chronically affected socioeconomic interests in several ways. This status review gives an overview of historical HAB events and summarises reports to the Harmful Algae Event Database from 1986 to the end of year 2019 and observations made in long term monitoring programmes of potentially harmful phytoplankton and of phycotoxins in

The Benguela Upwelling System (BUS) is subject to a high incidence of HABs. Of the major shellfish poisoning syndromes associated with HABs, Paralytic and Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP and DSP) pose the greatest concern, but as documented herein there are several other HAB organisms that are also present. Blooms of Alexandrium catenella have been recognised as the typical cause of PSP since 1948. In addition to the risk posed to human health A. catenella has also been the cause of large shellfish and bird mortalities. An additional risk of PSP is provided by Alexandrium minutum first det

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) are expanding globally and often involve toxin-producing species such as Microcystis aeruginosa that pose ecological and public health risks. Some cyanobacteria, including some strains of M. aeruginosa, lack antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, making them more reliant on associated bacteria for reactive oxygen species (ROS) decomposition. To evaluate bacterial contribution to oxidative stress defence in Microcystis blooms across stages of bloom development, we conducted a time-series incubation after a pulse of elevated hydrogen peroxide spanning t

This study investigated the use of propidium monoazide (PMA) to improve the accuracy of environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring by selectively detecting intracellular DNA (iDNA) from living cells, while excluding extracellular DNA (exDNA) from dead organisms. eDNA samples were collected from various depths off the coast of Tongyeong, South Korea, and analyzed alongside environmental factors, such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and nutrient levels. The results showed that PMA-treated iDNA provided a more accurate estimate of viable harmful algal bloom species (HABs) than total eDNA an

Over the last 30 years, harmful algal blooms (HABs) have occurred frequently in the coastal waters of China, resulting in financial losses of over 5.9 billion yuan (about 0.87 billion US dollars) due to massive fish and shellfish mortalities and negative impacts on tourism. To better understand HABs in China, herein we summarized bloom events with massive fish/shellfish mortalities and/or economic losses. Our results suggest that the diversity of HAB species has increased over the last 30 years, with the main causative species shifting from the raphidophyte Chattonella marina and dinoflagellat

The effects of physical transport processes on the initiation of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in estuaries were investigated through both mathematical model analysis and numerical model experiments. This study highlights the influence of the flushing effect due to physical transport processes on the location of bloom initiation, which is comparable to or even more important than local processes. The theoretical analysis suggests that the differential flushing effect at different waterbodies due to complex geometry is one of the dominant factors causing inhomogeneous distribution of algal densit
