New York hazardous substances emergency events surveillance: learning from hazardous substances releases to improve safety.

Since 1993, the New York State Department of Health, funded by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, has collected data about non-petroleum hazardous substances releases through the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (NYHSEES) project. This study investigates risk factors for hazardous substances releases that may result in public health consequences such as injury or reported health effects. The 6428 qualifying events that occurred during the 10-year-period of 1993-2002 involved 8838 hazardous substances, 842 evacuations, more than 75,419 people evacuated, and

Textronic Sensors of Hazardous Gaseous Substances.

Toxic materials are a threat in workplaces and the environment, as well as households. In them, gaseous substances are included, especially ones without any colour or fragrance, due to their non-detectability with the human senses. In this article, an attempt was made to find a solution for its detection in various conditions with the use of intelligent textiles. The approach was to perform modification on fifteen materials by screen printing using carbon nanotubes paste with expanded graphite and embroidery with stainless steel thread and then investigate their reaction with risky gases such

Releases of hazardous substances in schools: data from the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance system, 1993-1998.

This report describes the adverse public-health effects resulting from releases of hazardous substances in schools. Data were analyzed from emergency events reported to the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system by 14 participating states during 1993-1998. Compared with all other types of events, a higher proportion of school-related events resulted in victims (relative risk [RR] = 3.94, 95 percent confidence interval [CI] = 3.37-4.60) and in evacuation (RR = 5.76, 95 percent CI = 5.16-6.43). The most common cause of these events was operator error, followed in frequ

Lessons learned from hazardous chemical incidents--Louisiana Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system.

Since 2001, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (LDHH) has participated in the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system. In 2001, there were 815 events qualified for HSEES surveillance. Data for each event was gathered and analyzed. During these hazardous substances events, there were 1164 chemicals released resulting in injuries to 63 people, most with respiratory system irritation. Even though more people were injured in fixed-facility events, injuries were more likely to result from transportation-related events. The quantity and frequency of hazardous

[Petroleum substances--human health hazards. I. Classification of petroleum substances on the list of dangerous substances and assessment of existing hazards].

Complex products derived from petroleum are widely used as fuels, greases, solvents, and intermediates in many branches of industry. Petroleum exposure-related human health hazards, observed in occupationally exposed people and in the general population, are a serious sanitary problem. Complex and variable composition of individual petroleum products makes the actual assessment of human health hazards difficult. Potential hazards, and resulting classification of individual petroleum substance groups, are discussed in the presented work. This should prove to be helpful to work safety and hygien

The assessment of environmental and occupational exposure to hazardous substances by biomonitoring.

BACKGROUND: Modern biomonitoring has expanded beyond its origins in occupational medicine to cover a wide variety of diagnostic procedures and assessments of environmental pollution, ranging from exposure to heavy metals and chemicals to the effects of pesticides and environmental tobacco smoke. In biomonitoring, the overall pollutant load and hazardous exposure of an organism is quantitatively determined, by monitoring the pollutants themselves, their metabolic products and/or conjugates with protein or DNA, in either serum, urine or other body fluids, as well as tissue samples in exceptional

Removal of nitrogen, phosphorus and other priority (hazardous) substances from WWTP effluent.

More stringent effluent criteria will be required in the near future for the so-called priority substances listed in the Annex of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC. This includes heavy metals, volatile and semi-volatile organic substances, pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls. The Fraunhofer Institute suggested FHI values for these substances in water. National Dutch legislation, the Vierde Nota WaterHuishouding (NWH) introduced in 1998 'maximum tolerable risk concentrations' (MTR). These include requirements for nutrients: P(tot) < 0.15 mg/l and N(tot) < 2.2 mg/l. Th

[Anosmia caused by inhaled hazardous substances. Significance for expert assessment general practice].

BACKGROUND: Both environmental and occupational pollutants can affect the functional integrity of the olfactory epithelium or even destroy olfactory tissue. However, occupational hyposmia and anosmia have not been included into the list of occupational diseases. Therefore, compensation of occupationally induced smell disorders is difficult. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate patients with toxic hyposmia for the pollutants involved and to discuss consequences for occupational and environmental medicine. METHODS: A total of 19 patients were evaluated in our departments between 1993 and 1997 for olfactory

Single spectral imagery and faster R-CNN to identify hazardous and noxious substances spills.

The automatic identification (location, segmentation, and classification) by UAV- based optical imaging of spills of transparent floating Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) benefits the on-site response to spill incidents, but it is also challenging. With a focus on the on-site optical imaging of HNS, this study explores the potential of single spectral imaging for HNS identification using the Faster R-CNN architecture. Images at 365 nm (narrow UV band), blue channel images (visible broadband of ∼400-600 nm), and RGB images of typical HNS (benzene, xylene, and palm oil) in different scenar

Method Validation and Assessment of Hazardous Substances and Quality Control Characteristics in Traditional Fruit Wines.

The presence of potentially hazardous substances in fruit wines poses a threat for human health. However, the management standards and specifications of hazardous substances contained within various types of fruit wines are currently insufficient. The aim of this study was to analyze hazardous substances (cyanide, acetaldehyde, and ethyl carbamate) and quality control characteristics (pH, titratable acidity, sulfur dioxide, and diacetyl) in seven different types of fruit wines. The pH levels and titratable acidity varied between fruit wine types. In all fruit wines, sulfur dioxide (SO2) was wi
