Abnormal head movements.

Abnormal head movements have been studied in a variety of diseases using objective recording techniques and the data analysed with respect to the frequency content of the movement. Flopping, nodding, tic, chorea, myoclonic jerks, and most head tremors involve frequencies of approximately 2 and 4 Hz which correspond to the natural fundamental and second harmonic resonances of the head as determined by the mechanical properties of the head/neck system. These findings provide a basis for classification of abnormal head movements as well as an explanation of the characteristics of those arising fr

Compensatory eye movements during voluntary head and neck movements.

We studied compensatory eye movements during passive and active head rotation using the video head impulse test in 5 healthy human subjects. In passive trials, compensatory eye movements occurred with a median latency of 16 ms following the onset of leftward and rightward head movements, and the median velocity gain was 0.94. In contrast, in active trials, the latencies of compensatory eye movements were reduced (median 4 ms) and the velocity gains were increased (median 1.08). We found similar reductions in latency and increases in gain of compensatory eye movements in active trials compared

Head movements and postures as pain behavior.

Pain assessment can benefit from observation of pain behaviors, such as guarding or facial expression, and observational pain scales are widely used in clinical practice with nonverbal patients. However, little is known about head movements and postures in the context of pain. In this regard, we analyze videos of three publically available datasets. The BioVid dataset was recorded with healthy participants subjected to painful heat stimuli. In the BP4D dataset, healthy participants performed a cold-pressor test and several other tasks (meant to elicit emotion). The UNBC dataset videos show sho

Stereoillusory motion concomitant with lateral head movements.

Stationary objects in a stereogram can appear to move when viewed with lateral head movements. This illusory motion can be explained by the motion-distance invariance hypothesis, which states that illusory motion covaries with perceived depth in accordance with the geometric relationship between the position of the stereo stimuli and the head. We examined two predictions based on the hypothesis. In Experiment 1, illusory motion was studied while varying the magnitude of binocular disparity and the magnitude of lateral head movement, holding viewing distance constant. In Experiment 2, illusory

Head and eye movements in congenital nystagmus.

Patients with congenital nystagmus exhibit a wide range of unusual nystagmus waveforms and strategies to obtain maximum visual acuity. We investigated target acquisition strategies, head-eye coordination, and the effects of alteration of head position relative to gravity on congenital nystagmus waveforms in five patients. No changes in the nystagmus were found when patients' heads were placed in different positions relative to gravity. Two patients had distinctive abnormalities of head-eye coordination characterized both by failure of eye movement to precede head movement and by position of th

Disorders of head and eye movements in children.

Disturbances of the normal relationship of head and eye movements occur in several pathological conditions, including disorders of rapid eye movements and various forms of congenital nystagmus. In disorders of rapid eye movements the abnormal head movements may be a learned response using various techniques to improve eye velocity and amplitude. In congenital nystagmus with head shaking, the head movements may be compensatory, of common genesis, or suppressive. The vestibulo-ocular reflex may be manipulated in certain circumstances to achieve eye stability or to increase eye movement velocity.

Eye- and head movements in freely moving rabbits.

1. Eye- and head movements were recorded in unrestrained, spontaneously behaving rabbits with a new technique, based upon phase detection of signals induced in implanted coils by a rotating magnetic field. 2. Movements of the eye in space were exclusively saccadic. In the intersaccadic intervals the eyes were stabilized in space, even during vigorous head movements. Most of this stability was maintained in darkness, except for the occurrence of slow drift. 3. Many saccades were initiated while the head was stationary. They were accompanied by a similar, but slower head rotation with approximat

Artificial gravity: head movements during short-radius centrifugation.

Short-radius centrifugation is a potential countermeasure to long-term weightlessness. Unfortunately, head movements in a rotating environment induce serious discomfort, non-compensatory vestibulo-ocular reflexes, and subjective illusions of body tilt. In two experiments we investigated the effects of pitch and yaw head movements in participants placed supine on a rotating bed with their head at the center of rotation, feet at the rim. The vast majority of participants experienced motion sickness, inappropriate vertical nystagmus and illusory tilt and roll as predicted by a semicircular canal

Head, neck and trunk movements accompanying jaw tapping.

Several studies have examined the functional relationship between mandibular movement and head or body posture, but head and body motion during jaw movement have not been extensively investigated. Ten healthy participants performed repetitive jaw tapping movement. Piezoelectric accelerometers were attached on the surfaces of the participant's forehead, mentum, and over the spinous processes of the sixth cervical, twelfth thoracic and third lumbar vertebrae. The direction in which the antero-posterior acceleration signals appeared around the onsets of jaw opening and closing were observed for t

Subcortical contributions to head movements in macaques. II. Connections of a medial pontomedullary head-movement region.

1. In the companion article, a variety of head movements were elicited by stimulation in, and adjacent to, the gigantocellular reticular nucleus (Cowie and Robinson 1994). We refer to this area, caudal to the abducens nucleus, as the gigantocellular head movement region. In the present paper, the anatomical connections of this region, as determined by injections of wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP), are reported. The majority of efferent and afferent connections were with areas related to head movements. 2. Efferent fibers from the region projected via two paths

Covert anti-compensatory quick eye movements during head impulses.

BACKGROUND: Catch-up saccades during passive head movements, which compensate for a deficient vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), are a well-known phenomenon. These quick eye movements are directed toward the target in the opposite direction of the head movement. Recently, quick eye movements in the direction of the head movement (covert anti-compensatory quick eye movements, CAQEM) were observed in older individuals. Here, we characterize these quick eye movements, their pathophysiology, and clinical relevance during head impulse testing (HIT). METHODS: Video head impulse test data from 266 patie

Head stability during whole body movements in spastic diplegia.

Head angular stability is essential for postural control in whole body movement. Using the opto-electronic ELITE system, we have studied head orientation during the movements of squatting from the standing position and straightening-up from the squatting position in 12 children with spastic diplegia and 12 age-matched controls. Although no instruction was given regarding the head, diplegic children consistently performed excessive neck flexion in the squatting movement and excessive hyperextension in the straightening-up movement, whereas normal children maintained the initial orientation thro

Adult Periodic Alternating Nystagmus Masked by Involuntary Head Movements.

Acquired periodic alternating nystagmus (PAN) describes a horizontal jerk nystagmus that reverses its direction with a predictable cycle, and is thought to arise from lesions involving the brainstem and cerebellum. We report a 20-year-old patient with PAN who presented with an acute vertiginous episode and developed an involuntary head movement that initially masked the PAN. The involuntary head movements were abolished with a subtherapeutic dose of botulinum toxin to the neck muscles. We propose that the head movements initially developed as a compensatory movement to the nystagmus, to mainta

Bumblebee Homing: The Fine Structure of Head Turning Movements.

Changes in flight direction in flying insects are largely due to roll, yaw and pitch rotations of their body. Head orientation is stabilized for most of the time by counter rotation. Here, we use high-speed video to analyse head- and body-movements of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris while approaching and departing from a food source located between three landmarks in an indoor flight-arena. The flight paths consist of almost straight flight segments that are interspersed with rapid turns. These short and fast yaw turns ("saccades") are usually accompanied by even faster head yaw turns that cha

Why are voluntary head movements in cervical dystonia slow?

INTRODUCTION: Rapid head movements associated with a change in fixation (head saccades) have been reported to be slow in cervical dystonia (CD). Such slowing is typically measured as an increase in time to complete a movement. The mechanisms responsible for this slowing are poorly understood. METHODS: We measured head saccades in 11 CD patients and 11 healthy subjects using a magnetic search coil technique. RESULTS: Head saccades in CD took longer to reach a desired target location. This longer duration was due to multiple pauses in the trajectory of the head movement. The head velocity of e
