Malignant neoplasms of the head and neck.

Head and neck masses represent a common clinical entity in children. In general, these masses are classified as developmental, inflammatory, or neoplastic. Having a working knowledge of lesions within this region and conducting a thorough history and physical examination generally enables the clinician to facilitate an appropriate workup and establish a diagnosis. The differential diagnosis is broad, and expeditiously distinguishing benign from malignant masses is critical for instituting a timely multidisciplinary approach to the management of malignant lesions. Neoplasms of the head and neck

Head and neck manifestations of plasma cell neoplasms.

Multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma of bone, and extramedullary plasmacytoma are plasma cell neoplasms. They represent distinct manifestations of a disease continuum, whereby the clinical findings are critical to diagnosis. Plasma cell neoplasms are histologically similar, and distinguishing one from the other has significant implications for treatment and survival. Plasma cell neoplasms are relatively unusual malignancies of the head and neck region. We present a case series of plasma cell neoplasms involving the skull base, paranasal sinus, larynx, and mandible as an introduction to a co

SWI/SNF-deficient head and neck neoplasms: An overview.

With wide-spread use of next generation sequencing tools in surgical pathology, a variety of neoplasms have been increasingly recognized to be associated with specific recurrent defining genetic abnormalities. This has led to recognition of new genetically defined entities and refinements of preexisting heterogeneous neoplastic categories. Among these, neoplasms associated with inactivating mutations involving different subunits of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex have received special attention. In the head and neck area, SMARCB1 (INI1) and SMARCA4 (BRG1) are the main two SWI/SNF comp

Simultaneous (non-epidermoid) neoplasms involving the head and neck.

The phenomenon of multiple primary malignant neoplasms involving the head and neck is well documented. Epidermoid carcinomas constitute the majority of these neoplasms. Case reports are made of two patients with simultaneously occurring chronic reticuloendothelial malignancies and non-epidermoid tumors involving the head and neck. The first case is one of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and metastatic primary retroperitoneal extragonadal seminoma, while the second is one of lymphocytic lymphoma (LL) and a carotid body tumor (CBT). The head and neck manifestations of metastatic seminoma, CBT

Second neoplasm in patients with head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: The improvement in locoregional control of head and neck carcinomas over the last decades does not appear to modify the final survival of these patients, mainly due to the appearance of distant metastases and second neoplasms. We ran a study to evaluate the incidence of second neoplasms and their characteristics in patients with head and neck carcinoma treated in our hospital. METHODS: A retrospective study was undertaken to analyze the appearance of second neoplasm, its characteristics, and repercussion on the survival in 1845 patients with carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharyn

[Data on the epidemiology of head and neck neoplasms in Hungary].

Oral and pharyngeal cancer mortality of the male population increases in the fastest rate in Hungary. Both oral and pharyngeal as well as laryngeal cancer mortality is the highest in Europe for both sexes. The leading risk factors of them are smoking and drinking together. The per capitam cigarette and alcohol consumption of Hungarian population belong also among the highest in Europe. The authors have examined these damaging habits taking in account the collected data of Hungarian patient's group, the presence of them as risk factors have been compared to the smoking and alcohol consuming hab

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the head and neck: some suggestions for the new WHO classification of head and neck tumors.

As knowledge and understanding in pathology evolve, classifications and nomenclature also change to reflect those advances. The 2005 World Health Organization Classification of Head and Neck Tumours was a significant step towards diagnostic standardization of head and neck neuroendocrine carcinomas; however, in the last 10 years there have been new data supporting the recognition of "large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma" as a distinctive high grade carcinoma in the head and neck, a lesion not included in the 2005 Classification. In addition, the terms "middle ear adenoma" and "carcinoid tumor o

Preoperative embolization of hypervascular head and neck neoplasms using microfibrillar collagen.

Microfibrillar collagen is a bovine collagen material that promotes hemostasis. When mixed with contrast material it makes a fine slurry that is easily injected through small catheters. Experience with preoperative embolization of head and neck neoplasms in six patients indicates that microfibrillar collagen slurry is a highly effective, easy to use embolic material for occlusion of highly vascular neoplasms.

Margins for Benign Salivary Gland Neoplasms of the Head and Neck.

The proper ablation of any neoplasm of the head and neck requires the inclusion of linear and anatomic barrier margins surrounding the neoplasm. Extirpative surgery of the major and minor salivary glands is certainly no exception to this surgical principle. To this end, the selection and execution of the most appropriate ablative surgical procedure for a major or minor benign salivary gland neoplasm is an essential exercise in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Of equal importance is the intraoperative identification and preservation of the pseudocapsule surrounding the benign neoplasm. This arti

Treatment of patients with spinal metastases from head and neck neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Spinal metastases are uncommon in patients with advanced head and neck cancer. Treatment strategies in this patient group have not been defined. Although it has been established that neurologic dysfunction in patients with spinal metastases and cord compression constitutes an oncologic emergency, the role of surgical treatment remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the treatment options in patients with head and neck cancer who develop spinal metastases. METHODS: The clinical course of patients seen at our institution with head and neck neoplasms and spinal metastases from
