This paper discusses the right to health in Mexico. The authors present some ideas regarding equity and data which shows the existence of a deep inequity in the field of health in the country. The efforts of the social security agencies and of the Ministry of Health aimed at diminishing inequity in health are also described. The authors conclude that it is time to avoid retorical positions and attitudes of administrative solidarity and start to implement actions to improve the health conditions of those living in extreme poverty. These actions should include providing comprehensive health serv

BACKGROUND: Planetary health equity (PHE) is defined here as equitable good health in a stable Earth system. PHE is arguably in crisis. Human-made climate change is damaging global populations through hotter temperatures, wildfires, and more severe and frequent storms, flooding, and landslides. A tsunami of health inequities will result from this, as pre-existing health conditions and inequities in living and working conditions ensure that socially disadvantaged groups and people in low-income and middle-income countries are disproportionately affected by climate change. Despite evidence of th

Menstrual poverty (ie, the systemic lack of access to menstrual hygiene products, education, and sanitation) represents a profound barrier to health equity. This article examines the physical, psychological, and socioeconomic toll of period poverty, with a particular focus on adolescent, as well as transgender and gender-diverse, populations who face unique structural vulnerabilities. While state-level legislation expanding product access in public schools has proliferated, critical implementation deficits remain regarding comprehensive education and physical infrastructure. At the local level

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pregnancy and the postpartum period are vulnerable times to experience psychiatric symptoms. Our goal was to describe existing inequities in perinatal mental health, especially across populations, geography, and in the role of childbirth.
RECENT FINDINGS: People of color are at an increased risk for perinatal mental health difficulties and more likely to experience neglect, poor communication, and racial discrimination. LGBTQ + individuals encounter unique challenges, implicating the role of heteronormativity, cisnormativity, and gender dysphoria through pregnancy-related p

This article describes the factors contributing to ethnic health disparities and their impact on health equity in the United States. Historical examples of infectious diseases, such as smallpox, yellow fever, polio, HIV, and COVID-19, illustrate racial mortality differences that were eliminated by removing the diseases. In addition, disparities in cardiovascular death risk factors, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, inflammation, hyperlipidemia, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and obesity, are examined. The adoption of whole food plant-based (WFPB) diets is proposed as a practical and cult

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming biomedical research, public health, and clinical care by offering opportunities to improve outcomes and advance health equity. Its promise stems from its ability to analyze complex health data to inform prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. However, concerns are growing that AI may worsen disparities, especially for racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, and low-income populations, who often face a higher disease burden. Biased or incomplete data can result in inequitable outcomes. This review highlights strategies for equitabl

The treatment of heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) has substantially developed over the past decades. More than ever before, the application of appropriate evidence-based medical therapy for HFrEF is associated with remarkable improvements in survival, noteworthy increases in quality of life, and a marked reduction in symptomatic HF sufficient to warrant hospitalization. These enhanced clinical outcomes are driven by the "four pillars" of HF therapy: 1) evidence-based beta blockers, 2) Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibi

Despite available treatment options for addiction, there remains an abysmal uptake of treatment initiation and engagement among varying communities. The existing treatment gap is based on historical occurrences, including discriminatory drug policies that have targeted communities of color with addiction. The current opioid epidemic and differential treatment therein exemplifies the severity of the existing disparity in addiction treatment, highlighting barriers such as institutionalized racism and vulnerabilities in the social determinants of health. To mitigate the disparity, an array of sol

Enduring questions about equity are front and center at this watershed moment in health care and public health. Inequities that became evident in the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 have highlighted long-standing disparities in health by race and ethnicity. Current crises require examining and reorienting the systems that have, for decades, produced these health inequities; yet, public health and health care leaders are inadequately prepared to respond. The authors offer an equity-centered leadership framework to support the development of visionary leaders for tomorrow. This framework for leadershi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The United States is experiencing a public health workforce shortage, elevating the importance of workplace initiatives that support employee retention. In recent years, state health agencies (SHAs) have increasingly implemented diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies to promote fairness in the workplace, which have been associated with employee satisfaction and intentions to stay. SHAs have also increased investments in health equity infrastructure, aiming to address population health inequities. Less is known about the connection between these 2 forms of eq

Although a growing body of evidence underscores the contributions of community-based participatory research, community coalitions and other community engagement approaches to addressing health equity, one of the most potent forms of engagement-community organizing-has attracted far less attention in our field. Yet, organizing by and for communities, to build power, select issues, develop and use strategies, and take action to address the goals they collectively have set, may offer important lessons for public health professionals in these fraught times. We share, largely in their own words, th

Traditionally, research activities aimed at diminishing health inequalities and preventing crime have been conducted in isolation, with relatively little cross-fertilization. We argue that moving forward, transdisciplinary collaborations that employ a life-course perspective constitute a productive approach to minimizing both health disparities and early delinquent involvement. Specifically, we propose a multidimensional framework that integrates findings on health disparities and crime across the early life-course and emphasizes the role of racial and socioeconomic disparities in health. Policy solutions to address child health equity, with evidence to support the policies, are presented. Policies address health care, direct financial support to families, nutrition, support for early childhood and brain development, ending family homelessness, making housing and neighborhoods environmentally safe, gun violence prevention, LGBTQ + health equity, and protecting immigrant children and families. Federal, state, and local policies are addressed. Recommendations of the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics are highlighted when

The author feels himself to be an anomaly-both a full professor at age 38 at a nationally ranked medical center and a Black man from Baltimore with dreadlocks. He considered leaving academic medicine given the political changes occurring in the United States. The National Institutes of Health are terminating funded grants focused on health equity, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are rolling back effective public health strategies specifically designed to mitigate health disparities. His main impetus for entering academic medicine-advancing health equity-as well as his identi

Researchers and policymakers have used a four-pillar framework- condition, consistency, context, and cost-to describe the characteristics of housing that are important for health equity. We propose adding a fifth pillar: care and connection. Housing for care and connection refers to the housing design, institutional policies, and housing programs that strengthen social connections, caregiving relationships, access to resources, and a sense of self in community. Attending to these needs in housing is especially important for people who are in transition in and out of homelessness, living in pov

More than 47 million Americans experience mental illness each year, and more than 9.2 million suffer from mental health and substance use disorders. More than 60% of adults with mental illness and 81% of those with substance use disorders do not receive treatment. As the human and financial costs from our nation's mental health and substance use disorders crisis escalate, a strong business case to better address this crisis has emerged. This article describes the root causes and cost of disparities and offers an innovative perspective on aligning stakeholders to make the business case for equi

BACKGROUND: Unintentional pediatric cannabis ingestion has been rising following medical and recreational legalization. In this study, we aimed to examine the epidemiology of pediatric cannabis ingestion following legalization and to assess the impact of demographic and socioeconomic factors on equity of social management.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at two high-volume children's hospitals with level 1 trauma centers in the United States of America. Emergency department records from June 2016 to September 2024 were reviewed for children aged 0-6 years with a positive u

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Data shows that social drivers of health (SDOH), including economic stability, racial/cultural identity, and community, have a significant impact on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender and sexual minority) patients face a variety of unique health risk factors and bear a disproportionate burden of CVD compared to cis-gender, heterosexual peers. There is a paucity of research assessing the etiologies of CVD health disparities
