Health inequalities.

The association between mental illness and poor physical health has been known for decades (Philips, 1934). This is not a trivial relationship between mental ill health and minor physical problems but an association with such poor physical health that it results in premature death. For example, a study in the USA showed that the life expectancy of those with schizophrenia or other serious mental illness was 9 years shorter than for the general population (Dembling et al, 1999). Similarly, those with learning disabilities have an increased risk of early death, and this increase is greater in th

Health inequities in the modulator era.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the existing health inequities in people with cystic fibrosis (CF) and how the recent development of cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) modulators may impact these inequities. RECENT FINDINGS: People with CF (pwCF) from low socioeconomic status (SES) have more pulmonary exacerbations, worse nutritional status, lower pulmonary function, and an increased mortality rate with less access to lung transplantation. pwCF who identify as racial and ethnic minorities have earlier mortality, lower lung function, are less likely to be detected on newborn screenin

Health and social inequities in Ireland.

This paper attempts to discuss the shape of inequalities in health in the Republic of Ireland by focusing on social class, gender and regional inequalities in health outcomes as shown in annual publications of vital statistics and in various research studies. The Republic of Ireland has a demographic profile of rapid population increase, unique in Europe. While the birth rate is the highest in Europe, the infant mortality rate is relatively low, yet the perinatal mortality rate is relatively high. Attempts are made to analyse social class variations in mortality and morbidity rates but, except

[Inequalities in health in Italy].

Socioeconomic inequality and its impact on health is a growing concern in the European public health debate. In many countries, the issue is moving away from description towards the identification of the determinants of inequalities and the development of policies explicitly aimed at reducing inequalities in health. In Italy, ten years after the publication of the first report on inequalities in health, this topic is seldom present on the agenda of public policy makers. The purpose of this report is to update the Italian profile of social variation in health and health care in order to stimula

Cancer and Health Inequalities.

Cancer is subject to stark inequalities, with mortality rates 60% higher in the most deprived parts of the UK. Most research has focused on the role of behavioural risk factors or access to health care services. Insufficient attention has been paid to the influence of socio-economic factors across the whole cancer continuum. This essay argues that to reduce cancer inequalities and improve patient experience and clinical outcomes, we need to look more widely at inequalities in: (1) the risk of developing cancer; (2) the effectiveness of prevention, detection and diagnosis; (3) treatment; (4) su

Electronic Health Record-Linked Biobank Expansion Reveals Global Health Inequities.

Electronic health record (EHR)-linked biobanks are transforming biomedical research, enabling population-scale studies that integrate genomic, clinical, and phenotypic data. Yet as these resources proliferate, it remains unclear how their research outputs reflect global health priorities. This article presents a comprehensive review of five globally established EHR-linked biobanks: UK Biobank, the Million Veteran Program, FinnGen, the All of Us Research Program, and the Estonian Biobank. Drawing on 14,142 peer-reviewed publications from 2000 to 2024, we show how each biobank displays a distinc

Obstetrical health care inequities in a universally insured health care system.

BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic disparities in health care exist and are rooted in long-standing systemic inequities. These disparities result in significant excess health care expenditures and are due to complex interactions between patients, health care providers and systems, and social and environmental factors. In perinatal care, these inequities also exist, with Black patients being 3 to 4 times more likely to die of childbirth compared with White patients. Similar health care inequities may also exist in the Military Health System despite universal health care coverage, stable employment,

Addressing Criminal Legal System Health Inequities Through Redirection.

The criminal legal system and youth delinquent systems (CL/DS) are increasingly recognized as a primary sources of racial/ethnic inequity (REI) in health. Research funding institutions are beginning to focus on the CL/DS as a social determinant of health, some CL/DS officials are centering equity as a core concern, and some problematic CL/DS practices are being rolled back. However, the impact of such efforts may be limited because they typically focus on the most visible manifestations of inequity but often fail to address root causes and complex system dynamics. More meaningfully reducing CL

Promoting Inclusion Oral Health: Social Interventions to Reduce Oral Health Inequities.

To advance our understanding of inclusion oral health and to address the impact of social exclusion upon oral health, this group of papers sets out to provide an argument for the need for social and community-based interventions, theoretically underpinned by pluralistic definitions of evidence-based practice and the radical discourse of health promotion for those experiencing exclusion. Using the definition and framework of inclusion oral health, these papers illustrate the requirement for mixed-methods research, the incorporation of experts by experience in the research process, and the need

29 recommendations to combat social inequalities in health. The Norwegian Council on Social Inequalities in Health.

All political parties in Norway agree that social inequalities in health comprise a public health problem and should be reduced. Against this background, the Council on Social Inequalities in Health has taken action to provide specific advice to reduce social health differences. Our recommendations focus on the entire social gradient rather than just poverty and the socially disadvantaged. By proposing action on the social determinants of health such as affordable child-care, education, living environments and income structures, we aim to facilitate a possible re-orientation of policy away fro

Air pollution inequality and health inequality in China: An empirical study.

China's residents experience unequal exposure to air pollution in different regions, and the corresponding health consequences have increased remarkably. To ensure sustainable development, China should monitor health inequality and its potential determinants. This study empirically examines the health inequalities (represented by perinatal and tuberculosis mortalities) caused by air pollution inequalities (represented by SO2 and NOx emissions) from 31 Chinese provinces in the period 2006 to 2015, using the generalized method of moments (GMM) and quantile regression (QR). The GMM results reveal

Housing Policies and Health Inequalities.

A large body of literature shows the link between inadequate housing conditions and poor physical and mental health. The aim of this paper is to summarize the research on the impact of local housing policies on health inequalities, focusing on the issues of access to housing and fuel poverty as studied in the SOPHIE project. Our case studies in Spain showed that people facing housing insecurity, experienced intense levels of mental distress. We found that access to secure and adequate housing can improve the health of these populations, therefore, public policies that address housing instabili

[Social inequalities in perinatal health].

Social insecurity is a known perinatal risk factor but beyond that, a social gradient in perinatal health is observable. This social gradient is particularly visible for the risk of neonatal mortality from congenital anomalies, premature delivery, and low birth weight. Analysis of mechanisms that would explain how the different dimensions of the social status of women interact with perinatal health indicators are not to this day fully understood. However, numbers of intermediate factors related to both the social status and perinatal risk have been identified. Among them, smoking, drug use, ex

Technological innovation and inequality in health.

The effect of education on health has been increasing over the past several decades. We hypothesize that this increasing disparity is related to health-related technical progress: more-educated people are the first to take advantage of technological advances that improve health. We test this hypothesis using data on disease-specific mortality rates for 1980 and 1990, and cancer registry data for 1973-1993. We estimate education gradients in mortality using compulsory schooling as a measure of education. We then relate these gradients to two measures of health-related innovation: the number of

Health Inequalities, Intersectionality, and Justice.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Population health science that uses large data sets to study health inequalities increasingly draws on intersectionality, the idea that overlapping forms of disadvantage shape health inequalities. This approach is essential to the pursuit of health equity because it provides a more complete and sound evidence base for population health policy. As this approach has gained traction, it has drifted from intersectionality's founding ideas about social power and justice. This Perspective develops a framework of justice for the field that consists of a multidimensional acco

[Importance of genetics for health inequalities].

In Germany it has rarely been assessed in a systematic way, if and how genetic disposition and genetic testing are linked to health inequality. The paper aims to be a contribution towards closing this gap. In a first step, it is pointed out that the discussion about potential links between genetic causes of social inequalities has concentrated on issues such as body height and intelligence. It is stressed that, of course, social status is mainly determined socially and not genetically. In the second step, medical benefits of genetic testing are discussed. It can be assumed that low status grou

Malnutrition: another health inequality?

Malnutrition (undernutrition) is one of the many health inequalities facing governments in the 21st century. Malnutrition is a common condition affecting millions of individuals in the UK, particularly older adults, the sick and those cared for within the healthcare system. It costs the National Health Service > pound sterling 7.3 x 109 annually. New data highlight marked geographical differences in the prevalence of malnutrition across England and an inter-relationship between deprivation, malnutrition and poor outcome. As malnutrition is a largely treatable condition, prompt identification a

Migration status and urologic health inequities: a scoping review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Migration is an increasingly important determinant of health and healthcare access. Migrants often face language barriers, socioeconomic vulnerability, administrative obstacles, and reduced access to preventive and specialist services. This review summarizes current evidence on migration-related inequities in urologic care. RECENT FINDINGS: Available evidence suggests that migrant populations experience disparities across the continuum of urologic care, including screening, diagnostic work-up, access to specialist evaluation, treatment receipt, and follow-up.
