[Stressors in health occupations. Do females have a greater health risk?].

Stressors and health risks in medical professions are still largely ignored. A survey on different studies in nurses, students, doctors and dentists by this author is compared to results of other authors. Special attention is given to role-strain and health risks of women in health jobs. In nursing attention and care for patients is the most important stressor, followed by team conflicts, insecurity, lack of autonomy, workload and authority conflicts. Burnout is the most important shortterm health risk, longterm consequences are scarcely researched. Where direct comparison was studied nurses n

Promoting Health Through Engagement in Occupations That Maximize Food Resources.

Poverty is a complex problem in the United States with far-reaching consequences, often leading to a lack of food or lack of access to food. Proper nutrition and food intake are foundational to health and well-being. This participatory action research (PAR) project explored the challenges associated with living in poverty and managing food resources. Stakeholders engaged in a multiphase PAR process, which resulted in the development and implementation of a 7-wk occupation-based program. The program promotes graded learning of specific skills for managing food resources and emphasizes empowerin

National health insurance and the new health occupations: nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants.

This article considers a number of issues which might arise in formulating policy for new health occupations. Its particular focus is on nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants and their treatment under potential national health insurance arrangements. The development and expansion of these occupations are described, as is the evidence on their performance with respect to the quality of medical care provided, the impact on the cost of such care, and changes in access to care. We then discuss several issues which might arise in the context of national health insurance legislation, includ

Occupations at risk of contracting zoonoses of public health significance in Québec.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change plays an important role in the geographic spread of zoonotic diseases. Knowing which populations are at risk of contracting these diseases is critical to informing public health policies and practices. In Québec, 14 zoonoses have been identified as important for public health to guide the climate change adaptation efforts of decision-makers and researchers. A great deal has been learned about these diseases in recent years, but information on at-risk workplaces remains incomplete. The objective of this study is to paint a portrait of the occupations and sectors of

Occupational health nursing in Thailand. Insight into international occupational health.

1. As a country that is both agricultural by nature, and moving toward new industrialization, Thailand is increasingly facing work related health problems. Major occupational illnesses are pesticide poisoning, silicosis, byssinosis, lead poisoning, and occupational injuries. 2. Although the demand for occupational health services is high, occupational health services in Thailand are still not comprehensive. 3. Because of the lack of role perception and inadequate preparation, Thai occupational health nurses have limited functions in providing occupational health services. The services are prim

[Health inequalities among occupations: epidemiologic hints for labour and social protection policies].

BACKGROUND: Based on existing information systems in Italy, a program can be created for monitoring and surveillance of occupational differences in health. In recent years, a number of proposals were made for defining wearing-out jobs and for reforming the retirement age and/or required number of years of contributions: on these occasions the need to create a programme for monitoring occupational health was stressed. To this end, ISPESL (the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Prevention), in cooperation with the Epidemiology Unit of the Piedmont Region of Italy, assessed the validit

[Dermatoses characteristics for particular occupations. II. Health services and various other services].

The period after which skin changes appear is discussed, as well as localisation of their earliest appearance and allergens characteristic for physicians, dentists, nurses, veterinary surgeons and assistants, photographers and hair- dressers . Photographes handling coloured developers were found to be more exposed to dermatosis than those handling black and white ones. Ladies' hair- dressers suffer more frequently than gentelmen 's and nurses coming into contact with antibiotics and disinfectants are more exposed than other nurses.

Preliminary human health risk assessment of antibiotic exposures in human waste handling occupations.

Exposure to biosolids in human waste handling occupations is associated with a risk for illness due to microbial infections. Although several years of exposure to biosolids might be hypothesized to be a prophylaxis against infection, the risks associated with infections from antibiotic-resistant organisms can also be a potential concern. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a screening level risk assessment by deriving occupational exposure limits (OELs) characterizing the risks of adverse health effects among workers in human waste handling occupations with a focus on exposure to two pharma

The importance of health management and maintenance occupations while homeless: A case study.

Life expectancy for persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) is two decades lower than the general population; often, middle-aged adults experience such debilitating health issues due to homelessness that their physical bodies resemble that of a geriatric population. Environmental barriers limiting the ability for PEH to follow medical recommendations and access healthcare often result in decreased health outcomes for this population. The need to participate in survival occupations can reduce time spent in occupations related to health and wellness. This article presents a case study to demonst

Occupational health in Brazil.

Brazil is a recently industrialised country with marked contrasts in social and economic development. The availability of public/private services in its different regions also varies. Health indicators follow these trends. Occupational health is a vast new field, as in other developing countries. Occupational medicine is a required subject in graduation courses for physicians. Specialisation courses for university graduated professionals have more than 700 hours of lectures and train occupational health physicians, safety engineers and nursing staff. At the technical level, there are courses w

Implications of Artificial Intelligence for Administrative and Management Roles Among Allied Health Occupations.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies support the nondiagnosing/nontreatment roles of allied health workers, examining challenges and risks AI may pose for the workforce and highlighting areas for expansion as AI use grows. METHODS: We conducted 12 interviews with 14 key informants familiar with specific allied health occupations and how AI has been incorporated into their roles. Themes and gaps identified from peer-reviewed and gray literature informed our semi-structured interview guide. We used rapid content analysis to summarize findings from intervi

Health protection: Occupational safety and health.

Many of the Nation's approximately 100 million workers are exposed to some kind of occupational health hazard: carcinogenic agents, pulmonary or other physical disease incitant, physical agents or job-related pressures of noise, crowding, or stress. Exposure to toxic chemicals or physical hazards can produce chronic lung disease, cancer, degenerative disease in a number of vital organ systems, birth defects, and genetic changes. These exposures are estimated to result in 100,000 Americans dying each year from occupationally related illnesses, with an additional 400,000 cases of occupationally

Obesity among Health-Care Workers: Which Occupations Are at Higher Risk of Being Obese?

Obesity among health-care workers (HCWs) is an important issue as it can affect both their health condition and their professional capability. Although adult obesity is attributable to occupational factors, few reports are available on Malaysian health-care workers' obesity and whether different health-care job categories are related to workers' obesity. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity among HCWs and the association between various HCW job categories and obesity. A cross-sectional study was conducted by analyzing secondary data from the 2019 annual cardiovascular health

A further purpose was to examine occupational characteristics determining NFR. METHODS: 5000 engineers, carpenters, nurses, and home care nurses were invited to participate. RESULTS: The women's repertoire of daily occupations had changed as the years had passed. To perceive good health the women expressed the i

Cancer mortality among women employed in health care occupations in 24 U.S. states, 1984-1993.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers are potentially exposed to a number of carcinogens. Studies among women in this field have focused on white nurses; however, workers in many health care occupations share exposures experienced by nurses. METHODS: Cancer mortality was examined among female health care workers using death certificate data collected in 24 U.S. states from 1984 through 1993. Cancer mortality odds ratios (MORs) were calculated by race (white, black) and age group. RESULTS: White nurses had a 30% elevation of mortality due to liver cancer and myeloid leukemia.
