[Substance abuse by health personnel].

This paper is a review of the literature on health professionals with substance abuse and it deals with the epidemiology, treatment, and results. A similar study has been carried out on health professionals in Denmark. Very few data are available for this group. The prevalence of substance abuse in health personnel seems to be equal to that in the general population, and from these data it is estimated that 3300 doctors/nurses in Denmark have an active alcohol abuse whereas the prevalence of other drug abuse is not known. The National Board of Health receives 150 new cases a year, in which dec

[The ABCs on anthrax for health personnel].

The purpose of this series of articles is to present to health personnel an updated summary on bioterrorism associated agents. In this first article an updated summary on anthrax is presented. Emphasis has been placed on the characteristics of cases which occurred during October in the United States of America and on the experience of governmental agencies of that country to face the emergency. Measures implemented in Mexico are described as well. The authors are convinced that the best arm against terror is timely and updated information.

[Occupational dermatitis in health care personnel].

Occupational dermatosis are frequent among healthcare workers. Irritant hand dermatitis is more common than allergic contact dermatitis. It is enhanced by the exposure to irritants: water, detergents, disinfectants and a history of atopic dermatitis. Natural rubber latex contained in rubber gloves can induce contact urticaria or generalized immediate allergic reactions. Contact eczema can be induced by rubber accelerators such as thiurams, disinfectants (glutaraldehyde, dodecyldimethylammonium). Nurses can become sensitized to handled drugs (antibiotics, propacetamol...). These occupational al

[Viral hepatitis B in health personnel].

Currently published studies indicate that the prevalence of serological evidence of hepatitis B viral infection is two to five times higher among health workers than in the general population. Repeated contact with blood specimens is essential for the transmission of hepatitis B to health workers. In particular, accidental wounds produced by used needles, especially needles contaminated with blood from Ag H be positive individuals, are frequently followed by clinical or serological evidence of viral hepatitis. The prevalence of serological evidence of hepatitis B infection increases in proport

Recommended Health Care Personnel Immunization: Exploring Immunization Rates, Motivators, and Barriers to Immunization in Health Care Personnel.

Immunization rates among health care personnel (HCP) have remained low despite advances in vaccine development with reported rates ranging from 27% to 72% for commonly recommended vaccines. Within the United States, HCP are placing patients, families, and themselves at considerable risk for vaccine-preventable diseases. A significant source of infection, HCP are carriers of infectious agents and often unknowingly transmit these contagious diseases while experiencing minimal or no symptoms. This study examined the current immunization rates of HCP for influenza, tetanus, diphtheria, and pertuss

[Risks of repetitive movements in health personnel].

To date, scant attention has been devoted to the occupational risk related to repetitive movements in health personnel. Using three database, PubMed, Scopus, and EMBASE, we found 57 papers on this topic, and on possibly related upper limb symptoms and diseases. In these studies, evaluation of the risk, e.g. using the methods currently applied in industry, are lacking. Although in several studies data on the prevalence of upper limb symptoms and disorders are presented, a comparison of results is difficult as different methods were applied. Furthermore, a comparison with adequate controls is fr

Rubella immunization policies for health care personnel.

Rubella vaccination of children in the United States has resulted in a shift in the age of affected and susceptible individuals toward older age groups. In an effort to reduce the incidence of congenital rubella syndrome, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices have recommended rubella vaccine for all male and female medical personnel who might contract and spread rubella to pregnant women. A survey of hospitals and outpatient practices in Little Rock, Arkansas, revealed extremely low compliance with the recommendation, suggesting the need for fu

Implication of health care personnel in measles transmission.

Healthcare personnel (HCP) play an important role in transmission of highly contagious diseases such as measles. Current immunization guidelines in Catalonia include Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) immunization for HCP born after 1967 without evidence of immunity. Despite high vaccination coverage (90%) a high burden of measles cases related to outbreaks have occurred. The aim of this study was to assess the implication of HCP in measles transmission related to healthcare setting. A review of surveillance case data from 2001 to 2013 gathered through the Measles Elimination Program in Catalonia was

Investigating the respiratory health of deployed military personnel.

Recent news media articles have implied a direct relationship between environmental exposures such as burn pits during current deployments and the development of serious and debilitating chronic pulmonary disease. These articles suggest that the military is superficially investigating evidence that establishes a link between deployment and development of chronic lung disease. Anecdotal cases of military personnel with lung disease are detailed to suggest a systemic problem with undiagnosed and untreated pulmonary disease in deployed service members. Despite these contentions, the U.S. Army Med

[Costs of accidental punctures in hospital health personnel].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to calculate the average cost of each hepatitis B, C and HIV follow-up carried out in the health personnel that have suffered an exposure to blood and body fluids and to estimate the cost for each of the different types of sources as well as to identify the items that account for the main part of the cost. METHODS: A cost analysis was carried out. The post-exposure programme was modelled in a decision tree combining probabilities (percentage of each type of source in dependence of its positivity for the three viruses and immunization state of the health p

Health status of personnel occupationally exposed to radiowaves.

The findings of medical examinations performed in two groups of persons occupationally exposed to microwaves and radiofrequency radiation are presented in comparison with control findings. A group of 49 radar operators from the Zagreb Air Traffic Control was examined twice within a period of 18 months. The other group comprised 46 workers employed in radio relay stations. The control group were 46 workers from the Zagreb Airport. A follow-up study showed significant changes in haematological and biochemical parameters, in electrical brain activity and in capillaroscopic and ophthalmological fi

Poisonings in laboratory personnel and health care professionals.

A case report of an unresponsive chemist presenting to the emergency department is presented; in retrospect, the patient was discovered to have intentionally ingested cyanide. A review of literature regarding ingestions in laboratory and health care personnel reveals five common points encountered in these personnel: barbiturates, carbon monoxide, cyanide, azides, and methemoglobin-inducing chemicals. Key diagnostic findings, in the absence of history of exposure, are discussed for these five agents.

Presenteeism Among Health Care Personnel With COVID-19.

IMPORTANCE: Presenteeism-defined as continuing to work during an illness-poses a public health risk in the workplace and is especially hazardous within health care institutions where vulnerable patients may be exposed to nosocomial infections. Understanding the frequency and characteristics of health care personnel (HCP) who report presenteeism while ill with COVID-19 may help mitigate SARS-CoV-2 spread in hospitals and other health care institutions. OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of presenteeism among HCP with symptomatic COVID-19, and to evaluate the demographic, occupational, and
