Family planning and sexual health organizations: management lessons for health system reform.

Advocates of health system reform are calling for, among other things, decentralized, autonomous managerial and financial control, use of contracting and incentives, and a greater reliance on market mechanisms in the delivery of health services. The family planning and sexual health (FP&SH) sector already has experience of these. In this paper, we set forth three typical means of service provision within the FP&SH sector since the mid-1900s: independent not-for-profit providers, vertical government programmes and social marketing programmes. In each case, we present the context within which th

A case study in planning for public health education: the organ and tissue donation experience.

The chasm between the supply and demand of donated organs and tissues continues to grow despite widespread public awareness of transplantation and numerous efforts to educate the public about organ donation. It is fast becoming a significant public health problem in this country. The need for more effective public education is well documented in the literature on transplantation and is a primary objective of organizations in the transplant field. In response to this need, the Division of Organ Transplantation in the Health Resources and Services Administration of the Public Health Service init

Poliovirus-nonsusceptible Vero cell line for the World Health Organization global action plan.

Polio or poliomyelitis is a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by poliovirus (PV). As a consequence of global polio vaccination efforts, wild PV serotypes 2 and 3 have been eradicated around the world, and wild PV serotype 1-transmitted cases have been largely eliminated except for limited regions. However, vaccine-derived PV, pathogenically reverted live PV vaccine strains, has become a serious issue. For the global eradication of polio, the World Health Organization is conducting the third edition of the Global Action Plan, which is requesting stringent control of potentially PV-i

Communicating contraceptive effectiveness: A randomized controlled trial to inform a World Health Organization family planning handbook.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to compare 3 different approaches for increasing clients' understanding of contraceptive effectiveness. STUDY DESIGN: We randomized 900 reproductive-age women in India and Jamaica to 1 of 3 charts presenting pregnancy risk. RESULTS: The most important reason for choosing a contraceptive was how well it prevents pregnancy (54%) followed by few side effects (17%). At baseline, knowledge about contraceptive effectiveness was poor. About half knew oral contraceptive pills are more effective than condoms (46%) and intrauterine devices are more effective t

The World Health Organization Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders and the headache revolution: from headache burden to a global action plan for headache disorders.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders was developed by WHO to address the worldwide challenges and gaps in provision of care and services for people with epilepsy and other neurological disorders and to ensure a comprehensive, coordinated response across sectors to the burden of neurologic diseases and to promote brain health across life-course. Headache disorders constitute the second most burdensome of all neurological diseases after stroke, but the first if young and midlife adults are taken into account. Despite th

Assessing progress toward the World Health Organization's Global action plan alcohol reduction target in Sub-Saharan Africa 2010-2019.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases calls for a 10% relative reduction in the harmful use of alcohol by 2025. We assessed progress across 45 sub-Saharan African countries between 2010 and 2019 using WHO data on alcohol per capita consumption (APC) and heavy episodic drinking (HED). Trends were analysed for both the total population and past-year drinkers, using population-weighted averages and non-parametric methods. Regionally, both total APC (+6.6%) and HED per capita (+4.0%) increased slightly between 2010 and 201

Acceptability of drugs for male fertility regulation: a prospectus and some preliminary data. World Health Organization Task Force on Psychosocial Research in Family Planning.

Hormonal substances for male fertility regulation administered orally or by injection are currently undergoing clinical evaluation. These trials, sponsored by the World Health Organization, provide unique opportunities for intensive study of the acceptability of such an approach to fertility regulation, and of these drugs in particular. The research employs repeated interviews over a 15-month period and is conducted by social scientists collaborating with biomedical scientists at each of seven sites (Bangkok, Hong Kong, London, Mexico City, Santiago, Seoul, and Toronto). Development and validation of the ICF-Incontinence Assessment Form (ICF-IAF) to identify problems and resources for planning and evaluation of interventions using the Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health of the World Health Organization: Preliminary study.

Partnering with disabilityled organizations to prepare and respond to public health emergencies.

Over a quarter of adults in the United States live with a disability, increasing their risk for severe outcomes from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Additionally, people with disabilities face continuous barriers in accessing COVID-19 vaccinations. Disabilityled organizations are catalytic partners for public health departments to reach and provide services to and build partnerships with people with disabilities. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation funded three disabilityled organizations, two nationally focused and one locally focused, to partner wi

Mpox in sports: A comprehensive framework for anticipatory planning and risk mitigation in football based on lessons from COVID-19.

The World Health Organization's declaration of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) in July 2022, followed by its resurgence in 2024, has sparked concerns about its potential impact on sports, especially contact sports such as football. Although mpox is not a pandemic (as of late September 2024), the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) experience offers valuable lessons for proactive planning in sports. Our conceptual framework has been designed to draw insightful lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic to assist sports organizations in pl

Mainstreaming contraceptive services in managed care--five states' experiences.

CONTEXT: The ongoing, rapid national transition from a health care financing and delivery system dominated by traditional indemnity insurance to one dominated by managed care has enormous implications for the accessibility of contraceptive services. METHODS: In each of five areas with relatively mature managed care environments (all of Colorado, Massachusetts and Michigan, as well as selected counties in California and Florida), all managed care organizations serving commercial or Medicaid enrollees were asked about their coverage of contraceptive services and the procedures for obtaining tha

Developing and implementing a large-scale summit to improve health services delivery for rural, remote and Indigenous populations.

Inequities persist in health services delivery for rural, remote and Indigenous populations internationally. These populations require attention to improve health outcomes for individuals, communities, providers and the health system. Strong collaboration and trusting relationships in rural and Indigenous communities in British Columbia (BC), Canada enabled rapid health services delivery changes in rural BC in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, the Rural Coordination Centre of BC and First Nations Health Authority co-hosted the BC Rural and First Nations Health and Wellness Summi
