Accessibility and perceived value of health services in five western Illinois rural communities.

The purpose of this study was to determine the accessibility and perceived value of health services in five selected rural communities in South Fulton County, Illinois. The Health Services Accessibility and Value Scale (HSAVS) component of the larger Fulton County Health Care Survey was used in the investigation. The 12 items comprising the HSAVS surveyed participant perceptions relative to medical, dental, nursing, and public health department services available to them as rural residents. The HSAVS was completed by 1709 subjects. The reliability of the HSAVS was assessed by computing coeffic

Challenges in accessing and utilising health services for women accessing DOTS TB services in Kolkata, India.

Challenges in accessing and utilising TB treatment are a major reason for the existing gaps in tuberculosis (TB) control in India. Twenty qualitative interviews were conducted with women who were attending or had attended a directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) clinic in Kolkata, India. The resulting data were analysed using a thematic approach. Our results indicated that women experienced several challenges categorised as (1) DOTS specific challenges, (2) lack of client friendly services, and (3) resource constraints. DOTS specific challenges included having to come to the clinic fo

Location-allocation and accessibility models for improving the spatial planning of public health services.

This study integrated accessibility and location-allocation models in geographic information systems as a proposed strategy to improve the spatial planning of public health services. To estimate the spatial accessibility, we modified the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) model with a different impedance function, a Gaussian weight for competition among service sites, a friction coefficient, distances along a street network based on the Dijkstra's algorithm and by performing a vectorial analysis. To check the accuracy of the strategy, we used the data from the public sterilization progra

Geographic Accessibility to Health Services and Neonatal Mortality Among Very-Low Birthweight Infants in South Carolina.

Introduction Mortality for infants born with very-low birthweight (VLBW, 500-1499 grams) is markedly higher than for babies born with normal birthweight (2500-4000 grams). Although these high-risk infants show better outcomes in advanced care settings, only 80 % of VLBW infants born in South Carolina (SC) are delivered in hospitals with a level-III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The purpose of this research project was to assess geographic access to delivery hospitals and risk of neonatal death among singleton VLBW infants born in SC. Methods The linked birth and death records of a cross

Health Service Access Among Homeless Veterans: Health Access Challenges Faced by Homeless African American Veterans.

Veteran homelessness is a public health crisis, especially among the disproportionate number of minority veterans in the homeless veteran population. African American homeless veterans in particular face unique challenges accessing appropriate health care services to meet their medical needs. Their needs are often underrepresented in the literature on veteran homelessness. Drawing together over 80 studies and government reports from the last two decades, this review provides a timely synopsis of homeless veterans' health care access, with a particular focus on the barriers faced by African Ame

Postpolio survivors: needs for and access to social and health care services.

A needs assessment survey of 268 polio survivors residing in Maine explored the incidence of postpolio syndrome as well as perceived need for and access to social and health care services. A large proportion reported experiencing postpolio syndrome. Although knowledgeable of their condition, a majority perceived that they had no access to knowledgeable physicians or social and health care services and most were having difficulty coping. Findings indicate that polio survivors' self-appraisal of their illness status is related to their perceived need for and access to social and health care serv

The role of music therapy in Australian mental health services and the need for increased access to service users.

OBJECTIVES: This opinion paper aims to provide an overview of the current evidence base supporting the use of music therapy in mental health care. It also aims to offer critique on the issue of access to music therapy in Australia. CONCLUSIONS: There is a strong evidence base for music therapy to provide symptomatic relief and improve quality of life for people living with mental illness. However, music therapy is underfunded and framed as a supplementary service within mental health services in Australia, which limits its access to consumers. Funding music therapy as an evidence-based treatm

The relationship between community public health, behavioral health service accessibility, and mass incarceration.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between healthcare service accessibility in the community and incarceration is an important, yet not widely understood, phenomenon. Community behavioral health and the criminal legal systems are treated separately, which creates a competing demand to confront mass incarceration and expand available services. As a result, the relationship between behavioral health services, demographics and community factors, and incarceration rate has not been well addressed. Understanding potential drivers of incarceration, including access to community-based services, is necessar

Expanding Home- and Community-Based Service Access in the Veterans Health Administration.

OBJECTIVES: The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a continuum of home- and community-based services (HCBS) to support veterans' ability to remain in their homes and communities as they age. Although VA delivers some HCBS directly, many HCBS are provided through contracted agencies in the community. We sought to understand the strategies VA staff use to facilitate veterans' HCBS access, particularly as these services become increasingly difficult to access in many areas. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study using semistructured interviews. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A purposeful s
