Historically, the overall health status as measured by life expectancy and infant mortality of Black and White Missourians has been significantly different. We analyzed birth, death, child death and communicable disease data to determine if Blacks have narrowed the gap in health status. The overall health status of Black and White Missourians improved over the last two decades. However, the gap in health status still remains, and in some cases, has gotten worse. This occurred despite the increase in health care financing through Medicare and Medicaid. To narrow the gap in health status between

Recent work in biodemography has suggested that lifetime exposure to infection and inflammation may be an important determinant of later-life morbidity and mortality. Early exposure to infections during critical periods can predispose individuals to chronic disease, in part through the reallocation of energy away from development needed for immune and inflammatory responses. Furthermore, markers of inflammation are known to vary by socioeconomic status in adults and may contribute to overall socioeconomic health inequalities, but little is known about how the sources of this inflammation diffe

BACKGROUND: Complex gallstone disease is associated with greater risk of morbidity, associated with operative complications and longer hospital stays. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether ethnicity or insurance status is associated with differences in presentation and outcomes in gallstone disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for all patients who underwent cholecystectomy between August 1, 2007 and May 31, 2010 at the only teaching hospital in the region. Analysis of Variance, Chi square (χ(2)) and logistical regression analyses were used to evalu

PURPOSE: The hypothesis that health status disparities exist because of high levels of social disadvantages, the Social Determinants of Health - Health Disparities (SDOH-HD) hypothesis by Ramírez García [1], was investigated among adults (N = 1,833) attending SARS-CoV-2 testing events at 71 community sites.
METHODS: A Multilevel Structural Equation Model (CFI = 1.0, SRMRs ≤ 0.03), with cross-sectional self-reported data, operationalized health status with latent individual level and latent community site level variables. At the individual level, health variables met full or partial metric equ

BACKGROUND: Concerns exist over a possible worsening of disparities in health status and health care access across racial/ethnic and income groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to characterize trends in racial/ethnic and income differences in self-reported measures of health status and health care access among US adults.
METHODS: This serial cross-sectional nationally representative study included adults (age ≥ 18 years) participating in the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2019 to 2022. Self-reported health status (poor or fair health status, functional limitation, clini

PURPOSE: Substance use and substance use disorders (SUD) disproportionately affect people with disabilities (PWD), yet PWD remain under-represented in addiction treatment literature. While recent work has begun to address SUD prevalence and recovery service gaps, little is known about how disability status shapes substance use outcomes. The present study is the first to our knowledge to investigate how recovery, mental health comorbidities, and barriers to care differ across disability status using structured survey data from people who use substances.
METHODS: 333 participants who use substa

BACKGROUND: Despite encouraging trends in survival, sociodemographic inequalities persist among patients with melanoma.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify the effect of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and health care systems on melanoma-specific mortality within an insured population of patients.
METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort study, we identified insured adults diagnosed with Stage I to IV melanoma from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2014, followed through 2017, from the California Cancer Registry. We compared melanoma-specific mortality between insured patients diagnosed withi

Purpose: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth and youth with disabilities both experience health disparities. Little data exist on whether SGM youth with disabilities have worse health outcomes compared with SGM youth without disabilities. This study aimed to examine differences in health behaviors and outcomes among a sample of SGM youth by different types of disabilities. Methods: Secondary analyses were conducted with a subset (N = 9418) of the LGBTQ National Teen Survey, a comprehensive survey of risk and protective factors and health outcomes of SGM youth across the United States collec

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a prevalent and debilitating disease that can be effectively treated by surgical revascularization. However, Medicare-Medicaid dual-eligible patients have experienced worse long-term outcomes, notably higher rates of amputation and mortality, relative to other insurance groups. In the present study, we investigated how insurance status can perpetuate health disparities in PAD outcomes.
METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample was queried from 2000 to 2011 for patients aged ≥18 years with PAD who had undergone surgical revascularization with hospit

Researchers often explore health (care) beliefs as a function of individual characteristics; yet, few consider the role of context in shaping both beliefs and the behaviors that are informed by them. As a sociopolitical construct, ethnoraciality provides a concerning source of bias in studies of health (care) beliefs because it inhabits both individual and contextual forms. This study examines whether the ethnoracial context of the residential area where sexual minorities live is associated with a particular health (care) belief - sources of trustworthy health information - and considers how e

Cancer remains a major cause of premature mortality among women worldwide, and its burden is particularly pronounced in rural China, where delayed diagnosis, uneven access to oncology services, and nutritional vulnerability may jointly affect survival. This narrative review synthesizes mechanistic, clinical, and population-level evidence on the relationship between nutritional status and cancer survival among rural Chinese women, with a focus on breast, cervical, gastric, and colorectal cancers. It first outlines the epidemiological profile of major female cancers in rural China and summarizes

The COVID-19 pandemic affected mental health status and care among vulnerable Americans. We examined temporal changes in mental health status and assessed the associations between insurance types and mental health care among low-income U.S. adults. Using the 2019–2023 National Health Interview Survey, we analyzed data from 22,026 adults aged 18–64 with family incomes below 200% of the poverty threshold. Survey-adjusted descriptive statistics and linear probability models controlling for individual characteristics and time were used. Between 2019 and 2023, Medicaid enrollees consistently report

Although opioid use disorder (OUD) in pregnancy has increased significantly in the last years, there are still significant gaps in scientific data and in access to evidence-based treatments. OUD in pregnancy is associated with negative health outcomes in the pregnant person, the fetus, and the newborn. To prevent these consequences, it is imperative to identify OUD and provide treatment as soon as possible in the pregnancy. Effective treatments, such as medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), are safe in pregnancy but not routinely prescribed. For Hispanic pregnant people, these evidence-ba

INTRODUCTION: The inequalities in oral health remain one of the current issues in the global public health agenda. The number of studies investigating health disparity by religious identity is limited and there is currently no such report relating to oral health. Similarly, there is compelling evidence for oral health disparities between socioeconomic statuses, education levels, and ethnic groups. This ecological study aimed to explore the disparity in oral health-related outcomes between Muslim and non-Muslim countries and country income status.

OBJECTIVE: Although disparities have been described in epilepsy care, their contribution to status epilepticus (SE) and associated outcomes remains understudied.
METHODS: We used the 2010-2019 National Inpatient Sample to identify SE hospitalizations using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM)/ICD-10-CM codes. SE prevalence was stratified by demographics. Logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring, intubation, tracheostomy, gastrostomy, and mortality.
RESULTS: There were 486 861

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the explanatory role of health behaviors, socioeconomic position (SEP), and psychosocial stressors on racial/ethnic obesity disparities in a multiethnic and multiracial sample of adults.
METHODS: Using data from the Chicago Community Adult Health Study (2001-2003), Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition analysis was conducted to quantify the extent to which health behaviors (fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity), SEP, and cumulative stressors (e.g., perceived discrimination, financial strain) each explained differences in obesity prevalence in Bla

Background and Objectives: Despite the importance of nutritional status and a healthy lifestyle in shaping overall well-being, little is known about examining gender-specific differences and trends in health, lifestyle, and nutritional status. The present study aimed to evaluate blood levels of micronutrients, homocysteine, and CoQ10, as well as physical activity (PA) levels and sedentary behavior, among a cohort of Austrian bank staff, with a particular focus on identifying gender differences as well as gender-specific nutritional deficiencies compared to the reference ranges. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between rural/urban status, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and oral health outcomes, specifically focusing on inadequate dental visits and significant tooth loss.
METHODS: Data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), including 79,571 U.S adults from 12 states, was analyzed. Inadequate dental visits were defined as having last visited a dentist more than one year ago. Significant tooth loss was defined as the loss of six or more permanent teeth due to decay or gum disease. Multivariable logistic regression models were appl
