Linked surveys of health services utilization.

The linked population/establishment survey (LS) of health services utilization is a two-phase sample survey that links the sample designs of the population sample survey (PS) and the health-care provider establishment sample survey (ES) of health services utilization. In Phase I, household respondents in the PS identify their health-care providers during a specified calendar period. In Phase II, health-care providers identified in Phase I report the variables of interest for all or a sample of their transactions with all households during the same calendar period. The LS has been proposed as a

Measuring sexual orientation in adolescent health surveys: evaluation of eight school-based surveys.

PURPOSE: To examine the performance of various items measuring sexual orientation within 8 school-based adolescent health surveys in the United States and Canada from 1986 through 1999. METHODS: Analyses examined nonresponse and unsure responses to sexual orientation items compared with other survey items, demographic differences in responses, tests for response set bias, and congruence of responses to multiple orientation items; analytical methods included frequencies, contingency tables with Chi-square, and ANOVA with least significant differences (LSD)post hoc tests; all analyses were cond

Human and animal health surveys among pastoralists.

Valid human and livestock health surveys, including longitudinal follow-up, are feasible among mobile pastoralists and provide fundamental information to agencies for interventions that are responsive to realities and effective in addressing the needs of pastoralists. However, pastoralists are often excluded from studies, surveillance systems and health programmes. The occurrence of preventable and treatable diseases such as perinatal tetanus, measles and tuberculosis are indicative of limited access to health providers and information. It is difficult for health services to include effective

Are musculoskeletal conditions neglected in national health surveys?

OBJECTIVE: To describe the proportion of national health surveys that contain questions on the prevalence and consequences of musculoskeletal conditions. METHODS: We used a comprehensive search strategy to obtain national health surveys from the 218 countries listed by the World Bank. Two authors independently extracted information from each national health survey. Outcomes were the proportion of surveys that contained questions on the prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions using the Global Burden of Disease categorization of RA, OA, low back pain, neck pain, gout and other and contained co

Environmental health centers for asbestos and their health impact surveys and activities.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most prevalent and life‑threatening malignancies of the digestive tract worldwide. Ribonucleotide reductase regulatory subunit M2 (RRM2), a rate‑limiting subunit in deoxyribonucleotide synthesis, is overexpressed and is associated with a poor prognosis in various solid tumors. However, its functional role and mechanisms in GC‑specific malignant epithelial cell populations remain unclear. Single‑cell transcriptomic data from GC and adjacent normal tissues were analyzed. Key malignant epithelial cell populations were identified using inferCNV, pseudotime traject

Obsessive-compulsive disorder in the World Mental Health surveys.

BACKGROUND: National surveys have suggested that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent and impairing condition. However, there are few cross-national data on OCD, with data particularly scarce in low- and middle-income countries. Here we employ data from the World Mental Health surveys to characterize the onset, course, severity, and treatment of OCD across a range of countries in different geographic regions of the world. METHODS: Data came from general population surveys carried out in 10 countries using a consistent research protocol and interview. A total of 26,136 adults wer

Assessment of health surveys: fitting a multidimensional graded response model.

The multidimensional graded response model, an item response theory (IRT) model, can be used to improve the assessment of surveys, even when sample sizes are restricted. Typically, health-based survey development utilizes classical statistical techniques (e.g. reliability and factor analysis). In a review of four prominent journals within the field of Health Psychology, we found that IRT-based models were used in less than 10% of the studies examining scale development or assessment. However, implementing IRT-based methods can provide more details about individual survey items, which is useful

Trauma and PTSD in the WHO World Mental Health Surveys.

Background: Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) onset-persistence is thought to vary significantly by trauma type, most epidemiological surveys are incapable of assessing this because they evaluate lifetime PTSD only for traumas nominated by respondents as their 'worst.' Objective: To review research on associations of trauma type with PTSD in the WHO World Mental Health (WMH) surveys, a series of epidemiological surveys that obtained representative data on trauma-specific PTSD. Method: WMH Surveys in 24 countries (n = 68,894) assessed 29 lifetime traumas and evaluated PTSD twice fo

Capturing Latino Health Disparities: Lessons from Mail- and Community-Based Population Health Surveys in California.

UNLABELLED: Latinos face significant cancer health disparities and remain underrepresented in research. To address regional needs, the University of California Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCDCCC) conducted its first Catchment Area Population Assessment (CAPA) to inform outreach and engagement strategies. Our purpose was to understand the best approaches for capturing Latino health need responses and to understand breast and cervical cancer screening rates and risk factors. This cross-sectional study compared two CAPA survey methodologies used from July 2019 to March 2020: a mail-based a

Simplifying Oral health evaluation: a novel approach through single-item surveys.

BACKGROUND: This study adopts a novel approach of using single-item surveys to simplify the assessment of oral health status and behaviors among Japanese private sector employees. We aimed to establish the validity of self-reported oral health in relation to clinical dental examinations, and to elucidate the relationship between oral diseases, health behaviors, and self-assessments. A secondary aim was to explore the association of self-rated oral health with oral health behaviors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires and dental examinations were obtained from 2262 Japanese

Improving Identification of Gig Workers in National Health and Behavior Surveys.

This paper describes the work-related information collected in several important U.S. national health and behavior surveys, to highlight data gaps that prevent identifying responses by vulnerable workers in the gig economy, with emphasis on the growing digital platform sector of the work force. The national information systems used to understand health status and health behaviors, including drug use, rely on outdated census categories for self-employed workers. This paper describes the importance of understanding the needs of this growing part of the labor sector and describes how some of the

Considerations for transgender population health research based on US national surveys.

Transgender identities and health are highly politicized in the United States leading to restrictions on relevant data collection in national health surveillance systems. This has serious implications on transgender population health research; an urgent area of study given the systemic discrimination faced by transgender individuals and the resultant social and health inequities. In this precarious political climate, obtaining high-quality data for research is challenging and in recent years, two data sources have formed the foundation of transgender health research in the United States, namel

Early breastfeeding practices: Descriptive analysis of recent Demographic and Health Surveys.

The aim of this study was to describe early breastfeeding practices (initiation within 1 hr of birth, no prelacteal feeding, and a combination of both-"optimal" early breastfeeding) according to childbirth location in low- and middle-income countries. Using data from the most recent Demographic and Health Survey (2000-2013) for 57 countries, we extracted information on the most recent birth for women aged 15-49 with a live birth in the preceding 24 months. Childbirth setting was self-reported by location (home or facility) and subtype (home delivery with or without a skilled birth attendant; p
