The socioeconomic distribution of life expectancy and healthy life expectancy in Chile.

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy (LE) has usually been used as a metric to monitor population health. In the last few years, metrics such as Quality-Adjusted-Life-Expectancy (QALE) and Health-Adjusted-Life- Expectancy (HALE) have gained popularity in health research, given their capacity to capture health related quality of life, providing a more comprehensive approach to the health concept. We aimed to estimate the distribution of the LE, QALEs and HALEs across Socioeconomic Status in the Chilean population. METHODS: Based on life tables constructed using Chiang II´s method, we estimated the LE o

Life expectancy and healthy life expectancy of patients with advanced schistosomiasis in Hunan Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the change in life expectancy (LE) and the healthy lifespan among patients with advanced schistosomiasis. This study was to evaluate the LE and healthy life expectancy (HLE) for patients and assess the mechanism responsible for the LE inequality. METHODS: We utilized data from a dynamic advanced schistosomiasis cohort (10,362 patients) for the period from January 2008 to December 2019 in Hunan Province, China, to calculate the LEs of patients, and made a comparison with that of general population (19,642 schistosomiasis-free individuals) in the schist

Active social participation extends the healthy life expectancy of older men without spouses in Japan: The Yamanashi healthy active life expectancy cohort study.

This study aimed to evaluate the association between family structure and healthy life expectancy among older Japanese adults, hypothesizing that social participation increases healthy life expectancy more in older men without a spouse than in older women. This study collected data on Healthy Life Expectancy from 541 older adults between 2003 and 2021 from the Healthy Life Expectancy Study, a cohort study of older adults in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese long-term care insurance system serves as an indicator of a healthy life expectancy. The family structures of participants were ca

[Regional differences and trends in healthy life expectancy in Germany].

BACKGROUND: Against the background of increasing life expectancy, the question arises in which state of health the additional years of life are spent. The aim of this study is to assess for the first time regional differences in healthy life expectancy for Germany. METHODS: The concept of healthy life expectancy allows for the combination of regional differences in health status and mortality in a single measure. This article uses the concept of partial healthy life expectancy. We use official data on deaths and population numbers to calculate abridged life tables. Data from the Socio-Economi

Impact of musculoskeletal disorders on healthy life expectancy in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders are a key cause of morbidity in elderly people. How musculoskeletal disorders relate to healthy life expectancy remain elusive. Hence, we aimed to estimate gains in healthy life expectancy from the elimination of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries by using recent national health statistics data in Japan. METHODS: Mortality data were taken from Japanese national life tables and death certificates in 2016. Information on medical diagnoses, injuries, and activity were obtained from the 2016 Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions. We examined five disor

Demographic, health, physical activity, and workplace factors are associated with lower healthy working life expectancy and life expectancy at age 50.

Although retirement ages are rising in the United Kingdom and other countries, the average number of years people in England can expect to spend both healthy and work from age 50 (Healthy Working Life Expectancy; HWLE) is less than the number of years to the State Pension age. This study aimed to estimate HWLE with the presence and absence of selected health, socio-demographic, physical activity, and workplace factors relevant to stakeholders focusing on improving work participation. Data from 11,540 adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing were analysed using a continuous time 3-sta

(Un-) healthy ageing: Geographic inequalities in disability-free life expectancy in England and Wales.

Health expectancies are an indicator of healthy ageing that reflect quantity and quality of life. Using limiting long term illness and mortality prevalence, we calculate disability-free life expectancy for small areas in England and Wales between 1991 and 2011 for males and females aged 50-74, the life stage when people may be changing their occupation from main career to retirement or alternative work activities. We find that inequalities in disability-free life expectancy are deeply entrenched, including former coalfield and ex-industrial areas and that areas of persistent (dis-) advantage,

Comparing the differences in three measures of healthy life expectancy among prefectures in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: An ecological study using secondary open data from Japanese government statistics was conducted. The study aimed to verify differences in three measures of healthy life expectancy (HLE); namely, disability-free life expectancy without activity limitation (DFLE-AL), life expectancy with self-perceived health (LE-SH), and disability-free life expectancy without care need (DFLE-CN). RESULTS: Each HLE from 47 prefectures in 2010, 2013, and 2016 was extended over time. There were strong Cronbach's coefficient alpha (α) between DFLE-AL and LE-SH (Minimum α; 0.80, Maximum α; 0.90) as well

Country- and individual-level factors associated with healthy working life expectancy: A multinational longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: To address labor force shortages associated with population aging, many countries have proposed raising the retirement age. As health is an important determinant of employment outcomes among older workers, it is important in this context to understand the individual- and country-level factors associated with healthy working life expectancy (HWLE), defined as the average number of years individuals can expect to remain healthy and employed from age 50. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This is a multinational prospective cohort study, leveraging data from six health and retirement cohorts. The

Domain-specific trends in healthy life expectancy among Chinese older adults: Compression, expansion, and dynamic equilibrium.

BACKGROUND: Amid rising global life expectancy, the debate over whether population aging entails a "compression" or an "expansion" of morbidity remains unresolved. Previous evidence, drawn largely from Western nations and often reliant on cross-sectional data or single health indicators, has produced mixed findings. This study addresses this gap by investigating the health trajectory of older adults in China, examining whether it reflects morbidity compression or expansion across multiple health domains. METHODS: We analyzed 20 years of longitudinal data (1998-2018) from the Chinese Longitudi
