Mixed conductive and sensorineural hearing loss in LP/J mice.

Air and bone conduction thresholds for the detection of a compound action potential response were measured in mice of the LP/J inbred strain, which has been proposed as a possible model for human otosclerosis. Thresholds were compared with control data from CBA/Ca mice. Evidence of a mixed sensorineural and conductive hearing loss was obtained in LP/J mice. Few signs of hair cell degeneration or middle-ear bony lesions were found in 20-day old mice, although they generally showed raised thresholds to both air and bone conducted stimuli. The reason for the observed sensorineural component of th

Inherited low-frequency hearing loss. A new mixed conductive/sensorineural entity?

Eighteen patients with low-frequency hearing loss ( LFHL ), 10 males and 8 females with an average age of 27 years, were examined in order to classify their hearing loss, i.e. to find the topical site of the hearing lesion and to evaluate the aetiology of the hearing disorder. Based on extensive audiological test procedures, the patients could be subdivided into two groups: Group A comprising 11 patients with true sensorineural hearing impairment caused by various well-known aetiologies, and group B comprising 7 patients in whom no classification of the LFHL could be made because of conflictin

[The active middle ear implant for the rehabilitation of sensorineural, mixed and conductive hearing losses].

Active middle ear implants, such as the Vibrant Soundbridge, are used as an important part in the rehabilitation of sensorineural, conductive hearing, or mixed hearing loss. The attachment of the Vibrant Soundbridge at the round window and the usage of the Vibroplasty couplers strongly expanded the application of the Vibrant Soundbridge. The Vibrant Soundbridge is developed for patients who have an intolerance to hearing aids and a moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss. The VSB also provides an optimal solution for patients with failed middle ear reconstructions or patients with atres

The Online HEARRING Counselling 1.0 Platform Provides Clinicians with Comprehensive Information on Hearing Device Solutions for Conductive, Mixed, and Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

A platform to help clinicians ensure that hearing device candidates are informed about the benefits and drawbacks of their recommended treatment option would be of clinical counselling benefit because it could help each candidate form realistic expectations about life with their treatment option. Following the World Café approach, 54 participants (surgeons, audiologist, and researchers) generated lists of the benefits and drawbacks of each treatment option for single-sided deafness (SSD) and bone conduction (BC) solutions. They then prioritized the benefits and drawbacks. After the World Café,

Characterization of hearing loss in pediatric patients with osteogenesis imperfecta.

INTRODUCTION: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a common heritable disorder affecting type 1 collagen. The sequelae of OI vary, but hearing loss is a significant complication with 46-58 % of patients having some degree of hearing loss. Previous studies have suggested patients with OI may have conductive, sensorineural, or mixed hearing loss. Majority of these studies focus on the adult population. OBJECTIVES: Identify a relationship between OI and hearing loss in the pediatric population. METHODS: The TriNetx Analytics Network, a federated health research network that aggregates the de-identif

Tinnitus and Mild Hearing Loss From a Kiss.

Hearing loss is a common problem that everyone faces at some point in their life. There are three main types of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. Conductive hearing loss occurs when an external sound is not able to gain access to the inner ear because of some type of obstruction, e.g., cerumen in the auditory canal and fluid in the middle ear. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is due to damage to the inner ear, which affects the nerve conduction pathway from the inner ear to the brain. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Sens

[Surgical implantation of the fully implantable middle-ear hearing device].

The new fully implantable middle ear device (CARINA) is useful in sensorineural, conductive and mixed hearing loss. Surgical implantation of this device in the different types of hearing loss is similar in some aspects but differs in others. Consequently, we describe the surgical procedure in sensorineural and in conductive hearing loss separately.

Changes in spontaneous activity and CNS morphology associated with conductive and sensorineural hearing loss in chickens.

The effects of a conductive or mixed (conductive and sensorineural) hearing loss on anatomical and physiological properties of the chicken auditory system were examined. Animals used in the anatomical studies underwent either a columella (ossicle) removal, which produced a moderate conductive hearing loss, or an oval window puncture, which produced a severe mixed hearing loss, at 4 days posthatch. In a companion study, multiunit spike counts were obtained from 3-week-old chickens before, during, and after consecutive tympanic membrane puncture, columella removal, and oval window puncture. Bacterial meningitis and hearing impairment: A prospective study.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the incidence and the pattern of post-meningitis hearing impairment. A prospective study of 68 meningitis patients was performed. The patients' hearing was evaluated immediately following acute illness and periodically checked for two years. The incidences of the initial sensorineural and conductive deafness were 26.4% and 20.6%, respectively. Two patients (3%) suffered from mixed deafness. No consistent audiometric pattern was found in the cases of sensorineural hearing loss. Serial hearing evaluations demonstrated complete recovery of all cases of

Imaging of hearing loss.

In this article, we review the common entities causing the hearing loss and divide these pathologies into conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss. With this format, congenital pathologies are addressed first followed by the acquired entities. We review the common pathologies and the imaging findings affecting the hearing pathways from outside to inside, starting at the external auditory canal and moving inward toward the midbrain.

Hearing patterns in dominant osteogenesis imperfecta.

Audiologic evaluations and impedance audiometry were obtained on persons from 13 families with dominant osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Hearing impairment appeared in the late second or early third decade, usually with a conductive loss. Older patients had mixed or sensorineural losses. There was an increasing risk for hearing loss with advancing age. Impedance tests suggested that ossicular fixation may be the primary cause of middle ear disorders in patients with mixed or conductive hearing losses. The cause of sensorineural hearing loss could not be determined. The long-term success of otolog

Acute otitis media with transient sensorineural hearing loss. A case study.

A patient had acute otitis media with transient sensorineural hearing loss. Early symptoms included otalgia, progressive sensorineural hearing loss, and tinnitus with inflammation of the tympanic membrane. During the second week a conductive component emerged resulting in a 60-dB mixed loss in the 2- to 4-kHz region. The conductive component lasted 15 days while the sensorineural hearing loss recovered more slowly, with complete recovery at 6 months. Audiologic measures included conventional and extended high-frequency audiometry, 226-Hz and multifrequency tympanometry, binaural speech recogni

Large vestibular aqueduct syndrome with mixed hearing loss: a case report.

A case report of a large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS) as the sole radiographically detectable inner ear anomaly with a mixed hearing loss is presented. Hearing loss in LVAS is sensorineural with a conductive component in 15-27% of the cases. The hearing loss fluctuates and is progressive, resulting in the deterioration of the hearing after minor head trauma. The pathophysiology of the sensorineural hearing loss and the conductive component remains unknown. Endolymphatic sac surgery has been abandoned because of possible adverse results. In our case a complex anomaly was found in the sta

Pediatric otosclerosis: case report and literature review.

Otospongiosis is an osteodystrophy of the temporal bone, characterized by disordered neoformation and deposition of bone, characterized by the presence of a progressive conductive, sensorineural or mixed hearing loss and tinnitus. Typically, otospongiosis presents as a slowly progressive conductive hearing loss in the third to fourth decade of life. Uncommonly children and adolescents may also have conductive or sensorineural hearing loss caused by otosclerosis. We describe a case of an 11-year-old patient, with progressive unilateral conductive hearing loss for 5 years. The otoscopic examinat

Determinants of Speech Perception Outcomes After Hearing Aid Fitting in Conductive and Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Prospective Longitudinal Observational Study.

Background/Objectives: Hearing loss is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with speech perception representing a key functional outcome of auditory rehabilitation. While hearing aids improve audibility, outcomes vary substantially across clinical subgroups. This study aimed to compare speech perception outcomes after hearing aid fitting in adults with conductive and sensorineural hearing loss and to identify determinants of variability in rehabilitation outcomes. Methods: This prospective longitudinal observational study included 250 adults with clinically confirmed bilateral conductive o

Evaluation of hearing function in patients with lichen planus.

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory disease. We believe that tympanic membrane and outer ear canal can be affected by the disease and since it is an autoimmune disease inner ear involvement may be seen. The aim of this study was to evaluate hearing functions in patients with LP. Thirty patients with LP and 28 healthy controls were involved in the study. Pure tone audiometry, tympanogram and Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions tests were applied to the patients. When the airway hearing thresholds of the patient and control groups in the 125-8000 Hz frequency range were

The expanding domain of implantable hearing devices: an update on current status in the United States.

Several implantable devices are now approved in the United States for rehabilitation of conductive, mixed, and sensorineural hearing loss. This paper will review current rehabilitative options including middle ear implants, used for mild to severe sloping sensorineural loss, and bone-anchored hearing aids, for conductive or mixed hearing loss. The indications for these devices differ, as do the bases for exclusion. Audiologic evaluation parameters will be reviewed as a guideline to selection, and as a baseline to determine potential rehabilitative impact. We will also describe emerging applica
