Hearing loss caused by exposure to recreational and occupational noise results in devastating disability that is virtually 100 percent preventable. Noise-induced hearing loss is the second most common form of sensorineural hearing deficit, after presbycusis (age-related hearing loss). Shearing forces caused by any sound have an impact on the stereocilia of the hair cells of the basilar membrane of the cochlea; when excessive, these forces can cause cell death. Avoiding noise exposure stops further progression of the damage. Noise-induced hearing loss can be prevented by avoiding excessive nois

With increasing mechanization noise impact on de human being in professional as well as private life has grown into an ever increasing problem. The consequences are manifold, ranging from subjective discomfort to measurable inner ear damage. The author explains how damaging noise is defined and which are the problems resulting thereof. Course and effect of hardness of hearing are explained, also which measures can be taken to avoid noise-induced hardness of hearing. Particularly, prophylaxis is discussed in connection with SUVA's audiomobile programme and further prossibilities are shown on ho

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is second only to presbycusis, age-related hearing loss, as a cause of hearing impairment; yet, it is preventable. This commentary summarizes the effects of noise on hearing, relevant workplace regulations, and ways to minimize excessive noise's deleterious impact on individuals' quality of life on and off the job.

Work idoneity in hearing loss must be related to working ability and evolution risks. Working ability is referred to the difficulties found in speech comprehension and in signals perception. As regards hearing loss evolution it is necessary to define if the subject is affected by conductive or neurosensorial hearing loss. In conductive hearing loss it is necessary to evaluate entity and frequential distribution of the deficit. In neurosensorial hearing loss it is necessary to distinguish between noise-induced hearing loss and extraprofessional hearing loss. In noise-induced hearing loss the ev

Noise-induced hearing loss is sensory deafness caused by long-term exposure of the auditory system to a noisy environment. Auditory fatigue is an early symptom of noise-induced hearing loss, and hearing can gradually recover after people leave a noisy environment. However, if people remain in a noisy environment for a prolonged period of time, their hearing will be permanently impaired. Societal changes mean that people are more likely to be exposed to noise. The hearing loss and tinnitus caused by noise seriously affect people's quality of life and lead to huge economic loss. The pathogenesis

The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is thought to be part of the mechanism underlying noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Glutathione (GSH) is an important cellular antioxidant that limits cell damage by ROS. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of a GSH supplement to protect GSH-deficient animals from NIHL. Pigmented guinea pigs were exposed to a 4 kHz octave band noise, 115 dB SPL, for 5 h. Group 1 had a normal diet, while groups 2, 3 and 4 were fed a 7% low protein diet (leading to lowered tissue levels of GSH) for 10 days prior to noise exposure. One hour before, imm

In most textbooks, it is stated that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is an irreversible impairment of hearing. This is certainly true for the slowly, over time acquired NIHL. Working for years in a very noisy environment is causing a gradual killing of hair cells in the inner ear, with no hope for recovery. The other way of acquiring NIHL is by means of exposure to impact noise, and may cause various degree of impairment of the hair cell cilia, depending on the energy in the impulsive noise. If the cilia are completely broken, the chance for recovery is probably zero. In many instances, the

In a longitudinal and an age cohort comparing study the influence of aging and occupational noise exposure on hearing sensitivity was studied. The participants of the longitudinal study were studied at 70, 75, and 79 years of age. Seventy year old men exposed to occupational noise had 10 to 15 dB poorer hearing in the high frequency range than nonexposed men. The difference in hearing acuity decreased with increasing age. The differences between exposed and nonexposed older persons was no longer significant at age 79. In women there were no differences in hearing sensitivity between those expo

Noise-induced hearing loss appears to result from energy depletion in the hair cells. Cell membrane permeability is increased in hypomagnesemia, causing Na+ and Ca++ influx, with subsequent increase in energy-dependent ion-pumping. Energy exhaustion is further enhanced by hypomagnesemia-induced vasoconstriction. Dietary supplementation with magnesium was shown to lessen hearing loss in noise-exposed rats. It is postulated that the same mechanisms may act in man and the possible benefit of magnesium supplementation for noise-exposed workers should be investigated.

'Ecstasy' or 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methamphetamine (MDMA) is an amphetamine abused for its euphoric, empathogenic, hallucinatory, and stimulant effects. It is also used to treat certain psychiatric disorders. Common settings for Ecstasy use are nightclubs and "rave" parties where participants consume MDMA and dance to loud music. One concern with the club setting is that exposure to loud sounds can cause permanent sensorineural hearing loss. Another concern is that consumption of MDMA may enhance such hearing loss. Whereas this latter possibility has not been investigated, this study tested the

BACKGROUND: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the second most common acquired hearing loss following presbycusis. Exposure to recreational noise and minimal use of hearing protection increase the prevalence of NIHL in young females. NIHL is irreversible. Identifying minor hearing pathologies before they progress to hearing problems that affect daily life is crucial.
AIM: To compare the advantages and disadvantages of extended high frequency (EHF) and otoacoustic emission and determine an indicator of hearing pathologies at the early sub-clinical stage.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study

INTRODUCTION: Excessive exposure to noise is a common occurrence that contributes to approximately 50% of the non-genetic hearing loss cases. Researchers need to develop standardized preclinical models and identify molecular targets to effectively develop prevention and curative therapies.
AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors discuss the many facets of human noise-induced pathology, and the primary experimental models for studying the basic mechanisms of noise-induced damage, making connections and inferences among basic science studies, preclinical proofs of concept and clinical trials

Exposure to intense sound or noise can result in purely temporary threshold shift (TTS), or leave a residual permanent threshold shift (PTS) along with alterations in growth functions of auditory nerve output. Recent research has revealed a number of mechanisms that contribute to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). The principle cause of NIHL is damage to cochlear hair cells and associated synaptopathy. Contributions to TTS include reversible damage to hair cell (HC) stereocilia or synapses, while moderate TTS reflects protective purinergic hearing adaptation. PTS represents permanent damage to

In this study, we investigated the effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) for the treatment of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in a guinea pig model. Forty guinea pigs were randomly divided into four groups: control, noise (white noise, 3 h/d for 2 days at 115 dB), noise+G-CSF (350 μg/kg/d for 5 days), and noise+saline. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) were used to determine the hearing threshold and outer hair cell function, respectively, in each group. Cochlear morphology was examined to evaluate hair cell injury induce

In several laboratory animal studies, it has been documented that the hearing, vision, and brain can be injured due to exposure to organic solvents. This finding formed the background for a pilot study (n=16) aimed at identifying new ways of qualifying diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from brain injury due to exposure to organic solvents, also referred to as toxic encephalopathy. Diagnosing toxic encephalopathy is complicated because the symptoms of this type of diffuse brain injury are non-specific. So, it was initially hypothesised that some of the difficultie

Noise-induced hearing loss is currently the most frequent professional disease in Italy. Genetic polymorphisms of genes involved in the pathophysiology of hearing loss may confer vulnerability to the damage. To obtain data on these polymorphisms able to make a single worker more susceptible or resistant than others to the damage of the organ of Corti after exposure to noise, may allow a more efficient prevention.

The effects of noise are pervasive, and pathology can be found in the neural, sensory, supporting, and vascular cells of the cochlea after certain noise exposures. Several issues need to be addressed. First, what is the source of the wide range of susceptibility seen in people and animals that have similar noise histories but markedly different response to noise? Does this suggest a genetic factor in susceptibility to NIHL? Second, given the complexity of the biologic changes following noise exposures, it is difficult to predict the underlying pathology from standard audiologic tests. However,

The study was carried out on 85 workers with long-term exposure to noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A). The control group consisted of 85 workers who had never been exposed to noise levels greater than recommended, i.e. 85 dB(A), in their working environment. All the workers in the exposed group had hearing loss which was confirmed by audiometry. The Mann-Whitney test was used for statistical assessment. The systolic as well as the diastolic blood pressure in the exposed group was increased (P less than 0.001), respectively (P less than 0.01).
