Annals of noninvasive electrocardiology : the official journal of the International Society for Holter and Noninvasive Electrocardiology, Inc2014eng
Heart rate variability (HRV) is significantly associated with average heart rate (HR), therefore, HRV actually provides information on two quantities, that is, on HR and its variability. It is difficult to conclude which of these two plays a principal role in the HRV clinical value, or in other words, what is the HR contribution to the clinical significance of HRV. Moreover, the association between HRV and HR is both a physiological phenomenon and a mathematical one. The physiological HRV dependence on HR is determined by the autonomic nervous system activity, but the mathematical one is cause

Heart rate variability (HRV) indices based on 24-hr electrocardiograph recordings have been used in clinical research studies to assess the aggregate activity of the autonomic nervous system. Although 24-hr HRV is generally considered noninvasive, use in research protocols typically involves considerable data collection and processing expenses and substantial participant burden. The purposes of this research methods evaluation were to describe the relationships between 24-hr minimum heart rate (HR) and several 24-hr time domain HRV indices (Ln SDNN, Ln SDANN, Ln SDNNIDX, Ln RMSSD, and Logit50)

An investigation to determine whether there is any relationship between extremes of fetal heart rate during labour and subsequent heart rate at the age of 10 was carried out using data from the 1970 cohort of British Births. In 11,000 nationally representative children it was found that low fetal heart rate (below 120 beats/min) was associated with a heart rate at age 10 which was significantly lower than in those children whose fetal heart rate had remained between 120 and 160 beats/min (P less than 0.01). This relationship could not be explained by fetal asphyxiation, maternal antenatal hypo

BACKGROUND: Trypophobia is a common condition in which sufferers are averse to images of small holes arranged in clusters.
METHODS: We used photo-plethysmography to examine cardiovascular correlates and near infrared spectroscopy to examine cortical correlates of the phenomenon in order to validate the Trypophobia Questionnaire and explore the several interlinked explanations of the disorder.
RESULTS: Trypophobic images were found to increase both heart rate and heart rate variability, but only in individuals with high scores on the Trypophobia Questionnaire. Trypophobic images were also fou

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Heart rate (HR) can appear static and regular at rest, during exercise or recovery after exercise. However, HR is constantly adjusted due to factors such as breathing, blood pressure control, thermoregulation and the renin-angiotensin system, leading to a more dynamic response that can be quantified using HRV (heart rate variability). HRV is defined as the deviation in time between successive normal heart beat and is a noninvasive method to measure the total variation in a number of HR interval. HRV can serve as measure of autonomic activity of sino-atrial node. The aim of

Heart rate turbulence (HRT) is a baroreflex-mediated biphasic reaction of heart rate in response to premature ventricular beats. Heart rate turbulence is quantified by: turbulence onset (TO) reflecting the initial acceleration of heart rate following premature beat and turbulence slope (TS) describing subsequent deceleration of heart rate. Abnormal HRT identifies patients with autonomic dysfunction or impaired baroreflex sensitivity due to variety of disorders, but also may reflect changes in autonomic nervous system induced by different therapeutic modalities such as drugs, revascularization,

Survivors of acute myocardial infarction are at increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Recent trials have demonstrated that in selected high risk post-myocardial infarction patients mortality can be significantly reduced by implantation of an autonomic cardioverter defibrillator. Therefore, risk stratification strategies have gained increasing importance. Recently, a new method for risk stratification, coined heart rate turbulence, has been published. The method quantifies the physiological short term fluctuation of sinus rhythm cycle lengths following singular ventricular premature complexes

PURPOSE: To present an overview of the applicability of heart rate variability measurements in medicine.
DATA SOURCES: During a 4-year period all new papers concerning heart rate variability were collected. A selection of the most recent publications in the presented research area was used for this review.
DATA SYNTHESIS: The amount of short- and long-term variability in heart rate reflects the vagal and sympathetic function of the autonomic nervous system, respectively. Therefore heart rate variability can be used as a monitoring tool in clinical conditions with altered autonomic nervous sy

Heart rate variability (HRV) has become a useful parameter for the quantification of autonomic nervous function. HRV has been quantified, either by time domain or frequency domain analysis. Time domain measures, such as CVRR and RR50, are easy to calculate but they only provide information related to parasympathetic activity. The spectral analyses, on the other hand, give us information concerning 3 oscillatory components. The high frequency band (the frequency between 0.15-0.5 Hz) is known as the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and the middle frequency band (0.88-0.15 Hz) is attributed to

Reduced heart rate variability carries an adverse prognosis in patients who have survived an acute myocardial infarction. This article reviews the physiology, technical problems of assessment, and clinical relevance of heart rate variability. The sympathovagal influence and the clinical assessment of heart rate variability are discussed. Methods measuring heart rate variability are classified into four groups, and the advantages and disadvantages of each group are described. Concentration is on risk stratification of postmyocardial infarction patients. The evidence suggests that heart rate var

In high-income countries, fetal hypoxia affects 3 to 8 newborns per 1000 live births with subsequent moderate or severe Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) in 0.5 to 1 per 1000 live births. Visual interpretation of FHR signal issued from a Doppler ultrasound cardiotocography is the gold standard to monitor fetal condition. Unfortunately, its analysis presents a high rate of inter-observer variability and a low specificity to predict poor neonatal outcomes. Under hypoxia, the fetus develops several adaptive mechanisms regulated by the autonomic nervous system inducing changes in the fetal hea

PURPOSE: Aerobic training accelerates Heart Rate Recovery after exercise in healthy subjects and in patients with coronary disease. As shown by pharmacological autonomic blockade, HRR early after exercise is dependent primarily on parasympathetic reactivation. Thus, accelerated HRR early after exercise in endurance-trained athletes may be attributed to augmented parasympathetic reactivation. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the HRR early after submaximal exercise is related to the pre-exercise parasympathetic modulation.
METHODS: Thirty endurance-trained athletes (20 males,

Aim The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the pathogenesis of vasovagal syncope, but studies on the effect of basal autonomic tone have found confusing results. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of basal autonomic functions, as assessed by heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate turbulence (HRT), in patients with vasovagal syncope.Material and methods Patients who underwent head-up tilt test (HUTT) due to unexplained syncope and who had a 24 hr Holter ECG recording in the same period were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with diabetes, a history

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine heart rate and heart rate variability during cardiac computed tomography (CT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety patients (59.0 +/- 13.5 years) underwent coronary CT angiography (CTA), with 52 patients also undergoing coronary artery calcium scanning (CAC). Forty-two patients with heart rate greater than 70 bpm were pretreated with oral beta-blockers (in five patients, use of beta-blocker was not known). Sixty-four patients were given sublingual nitroglycerin. Mean heart rate and percentage of beats outside a +/-5 bpm region about the mean were compa

OBJECTIVES: Increased heart rate has shown to be associated with risk of mortality from cardiovascular diseases in some studies, but not in others. Increased heart rate has also been linked to causes of death other than cardiovascular. To clarify the role of heart rate as a predictor of death we studied its predictive value in a large population study.
DESIGN: A prospective population study with a follow-up time of 23 years.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study population comprised 5598 men and 5119 women 30-59 years of age on entry. Heart rate was measured from resting ECGs.

Intrapartum fetal monitoring's primary goal is to avoid adverse perinatal outcomes related to hypoxia/acidosis without increasing unnecessary interventions. Recently, a set of indices were proposed as new biomarkers to analyze heart rate (HR), termed HR fragmentation (HRF). In this work, the HRF indices were applied to intrapartum fetal heart rate (FHR) traces to evaluate fetal acidemia. The fragmentation method produces four indices: PIP-Percentage of inflection points; IALS-Inverse of the average length of acceleration/deceleration segments; PSS-Percentage of short segments; PAS-Percentage o
