Electrocardiographic pill for cattle heart rate determination.

Decreased agricultural profit margins and recent bioterrorism concerns have led to an increased interest in monitoring livestock health. Heart rate and core body temperature are traditional vital parameters for cattle health assessment, as they provide warnings for illness and disease. However, obtaining these data in the field is time and labor intensive, which speaks to the need for solutions that provide continuous and automatic acquisition of these parameters. This paper presents the design of a pill that can remain in an animal's reticulum and use electrocardiographic techniques to ascert

Determination of heart rate variability with an electronic stethoscope.

INTRODUCTION: Heart rate variability (HRV) is widely used to characterize cardiac autonomic function by measuring beat-to-beat alterations in heart rate. Decreased HRV has been found predictive of worse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes. HRV is determined from time intervals between QRS complexes recorded by electrocardiography (ECG) for several minutes to 24 h. Although cardiac auscultation with a stethoscope is performed routinely on patients, the human ear cannot detect heart sound time intervals. The electronic stethoscope digitally processes heart sounds, from which cardiac time intervals can

Heart rate and heart rate variability in pregnant dairy cows and their fetuses determined by fetomaternal electrocardiography.

In this study, fetomaternal electrocardiograms were recorded once weekly in cattle during the last 14 weeks of gestation. From the recorded beat-to-beat (RR) intervals, heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) variables standard deviation of the RR interval (SDRR) and root mean square of successive RR differences (RMSSD) were calculated. To differentiate between effects of lactation and gestation, pregnant lactating (PL) cows (n = 7) and pregnant nonlactating (PNL) heifers (n = 8) were included. We hypothesized that lactation is associated with stress detectable by HRV analysis. We also fol

The physiological determinants and risk correlations of elevated heart rate.

A number of studies have shown that fast heart rate is associated with high blood pressure and metabolic disturbances, and that it is a strong precursor of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular events. Subjects with tachycardia often also exhibit increased plasma insulin, overweight, and higher hematocrit. These relationships have been observed also in the elderly and among hypertensive individuals and have held true after controlling for smoking, alcohol intake, and physical activity habits. In three different populations studied with a mixture analysis we demonstrated that the he

Determination of ideal target exercise heart rate for cardiac patients suitable for rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Exercise prescription for patients with cardiovascular disease remains a challenge. The concept of exercising at an intensity equivalent to one's anaerobic threshold has been well studied and highly recommended in the fitness industry for other populations. For this concept to be applicable to patients with cardiovascular disease, the level and intensity of activity must not trigger myocardial ischemia. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that the heart rate at ventilatory anaerobic threshold (HRVAT ) will not exceed heart rate at ischemic threshold (HRIT ) (ie, HRVAT ≤ HRIT in a majority

Determination of fetal heart rate short-term variation from umbilical artery Doppler waveforms.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of using umbilical artery (UA) Doppler waveforms to measure fetal heart rate (FHR) short-term variation (STV) across gestation. METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal study, conducted at two study sites, of 195 pregnancies considered low risk. Pulsed-wave Doppler of the UAs was performed at 4-weekly intervals, between 14 and 40 weeks of gestation, using a standardized imaging protocol. Up to 12 consecutive UA Doppler waveforms were analyzed using offline processing software. FHR STV was calculated using average R-R intervals extracted from the wave

Heart rate as a determinant of the decay rate of the cardiac inotropic response to sympathetic nervous activity.

The cardiac responses to sympathetic nerve stimulation were measured in a series of open-chest, anesthetized dogs. In half the animals, the hearts were in a sinus rhythm; in the remaining animals, the hearts were in an atrioventricular (AV) junctional rhythm. Cocaine markedly prolonged the decay times of the chronotropic responses after cessation of sympathetic stimulation, regardless of the type of rhythm. The decay times of the inotropic responses were only slightly prolonged by cocaine in animals with a sinus rhythm, but the prolongations were pronounced in animals with an AV junctional rhy

Determinants of a reduced heart rate variability in chronic atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate whether clinical factors, which influence heart rate variability (HRV) in the presence of undisturbed sinus rhythm, have any associations with HRV in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: One hundred ninety-seven consecutive patients with permanent AF were included (122 males, 75 females, aged 64 ± 11 years, range 25-85). In each patient a 24-hour electrocardiographic recording was performed and an HRV fraction (HRVF)-the index based on scatter plot numerical processing-was calculated. Additionally, standard HRV measures were analyzed. Red

Determinants of short-period heart rate variability in the general population.

Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with a worse prognosis in a variety of diseases and disorders. We evaluated the determinants of short-period HRV in a random sample of 149 middle-aged men and 137 women from the general population. Spectral analysis was used to compute low-frequency (LF), high-frequency (HF) and total-frequency power. HRV showed a strong inverse association with age and heart rate in both sexes with a more pronounced effect of heart rate on HRV in women. Age and heart rate-adjusted LF was significantly higher in men and HF higher in women. Significant negati

Determinants of the heart rate variability in type 1 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of heart rate variability (HRV) detects the early subclinical alterations of the autonomic nervous system. Thus, impaired HRV is the earliest subclinical marker of cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore the HRV parameters in asymptomatic T1DM patients and compare them with the results obtained in healthy subjects. Potential associations between HRV parameters and the established risk factors for CAN and cardiovascular diseases were also investigated. METHODS: Seventy T1DM patients (38 ± 12 years, 46 female

Determinants of fetal heart rate response to vibroacoustic stimulation in labor.

To determine whether the fetal heart accelerates in response to a sound stimulus in labor, 40 women at various stages of labor were chosen at random to receive either a vibroacoustic stimulus or sham stimulus over the fetal head. Subsequent fetal heart rate (FHR) accelerations occurred to a significantly greater extent in study patients. One hundred thirty-two high- and low-risk patients were studied to determine correlations between the acceleration response and other maternal and fetal variables. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between the heart rate response to st

Heart rate response determines long term exercise capacity after heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Exercise capacity after heart transplantation (HTx) remains limited despite normal left ventricular systolic function of the allograft. Various clinical and haemodynamic parameters are predictive of exercise capacity following HTx. However, the predictive significance of chronotropic competence has not been demonstrated unequivocally despite its immediate relevance for cardiac output. AIMS: This study assesses the predictive value of various clinical and haemodynamic parameters for exercise capacity in HTx recipients with complete chronotropic competence evolving within the first

A simple approach to determine loss of physiological complexity in heart rate series.

There are several ways to assess complexity, but no method has yet been developed for quantitatively calculating the 'loss of fractal complexity' under pathological or physiological states. In this paper, we aimed to quantitatively evaluate fractal complexity loss using a novel approach and new variables developed from Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) log-log graphics. Three study groups were established to evaluate the new approach: one for normal sinus rhythm (NSR), one for congestive heart failure (CHF), and white noise signal (WNS). ECG recordings of the NSR and CHF groups were obtaine

Determinants of heart rate variability in the general population: The Lifelines Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) is an important marker of heart health, with low values reflecting reduced vagal control of the heart rhythm. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which a broad range of demographic (age, sex), lifestyle (physical activity, smoking, alcohol use), and psychosocial factors (stress, social well-being, neuroticism) explain individual differences in HRV in the general population. METHODS: Using baseline data of 10-second electrocardiograms from the Lifelines Cohort Study (n = 149,205; 58.7% female; mean age ± SD: 44.6 ± 13.

Determinants of heart rate recovery in patients with suspected coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate recovery after exercise is an independent prognostic indicator for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. The purpose of this study was to clarify the clinical determinants of heart rate recovery. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined 114 consecutive male patients who underwent exercise myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography and echocardiography for the evaluation of suspected coronary artery disease. Heart rate recovery was obtained from the subtraction of heart rate in the first minute of recovery after exercise from maximal heart rate during exer

cAMP sensitivity of HCN pacemaker channels determines basal heart rate but is not critical for autonomic rate control.

BACKGROUND: HCN channels activate the pacemaker current I(f), which is thought to contribute significantly to generation and regulation of heart rhythm. HCN4 represents the dominant isotype in the sinoatrial node and binding of cAMP was suggested to be necessary for autonomic heart rate regulation. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a candidate gene approach, a heterozygous insertion of 13 nucleotides in exon 6 of the HCN4 gene leading to a truncated cyclic nucleotide-binding domain was identified in a 45-year-old woman with sinus bradycardia. Biophysical properties determined by whole-cell patch-clamp

The predictive value of heart rate in determining clinical course after a bupropion overdose.

INTRODUCTION: Bupropion is a popular antidepressant due to its favorable side effect profile and indications for smoking cessation and weight loss. Due to the possibility of delayed onset seizure and other adverse outcomes after bupropion overdose, patients are often observed for periods of 12-24 hours following suspected ingestion. Tachycardia is a clinical predictor that holds promise in differentiating cases at risk for seizures from low-risk cases that do not require prolonged observation. This study assessed whether heart rate within the first eight hours of presentation can identify case
