We present findings from an outbreak of a heartwater-like disease in camels that killed at least 2000 adult animals in Kenya in 2016. Clinical signs included excitability, head pressing, aimless wandering, recumbency, and fast breathing followed by death after about 4 days. The observed morbidity in one herd was 40% with an average mortality of 7.5% in animals that received early antibiotic treatments. In untreated adults, the case fatality rate reached 100%. Gross pathology showed pulmonary edema, pleural exudate, hydrothorax, hydropericardium, ascites, enlarged "cooked" liver, nephrosis, and

The effects of ticks and tick-borne disease infections on the lactation and weight gain of Mashona cattle were studied at Mbizi Quarantine Station in the south-eastern lowveld of Zimbabwe. Twenty-nine Mashona cows were allocated to 2 balanced groups and kept in separate paddocks at a stocking rate of one animal per 8 ha. One group received regular acaricide treatment to control bont (Amblyomma hebraeum) and other ticks. The other group was left untreated. The cows were artificially inseminated. The acaricide-treated cows and calves were essentially tick free throughout the experiment, while th

Heartwater, an often fatal rickettsial disease of domestic ruminants transmitted by Amblyomma variegatum ticks, ranks with the A. variegatum-associated skin disease dermatophilosis as a major constraint to the upgrading of livestock productivity in Ghana. An epidemiological survey, using new diagnostic tests, is being carried out to determine the incidence and distribution of heartwater and other tickborne diseases in Ghanaian cattle, sheep and goats. Preliminary results from a longitudinal survey being carried out at sites in the Greater Accra Region indicating that although the vector ticks

As part of a series of studies associated with the development of improved vaccines for heartwater (a tick-borne disease of ruminant livestock caused by Cowdria ruminantium), field surveys were carried out to assess losses associated with the disease and the costs associated with controlling it in the two main agro-ecological zones of Zimbabwe (lowveld and highveld) where heartwater is believed to be endemic and epidemic, respectively. In each zone, a cross-sectional study was performed in the main farming systems (smallholder (SH) and large-scale commercial (LSC) beef and dairy), followed by

The first written record of what probably could have been heartwater originates from South Africa and dates back to 1838. Since then, the disease was described from almost all the African countries south of the Sahara as well as from Madagascar, São Tome, Reunion, Mauritius and a number of islands in the Caribbean. Most research on the disease, at least until recently, was conducted in South Africa. Progress in research was slow but a few outstanding findings are mentioned in this paper. Despite inadequate information on its actual economic impact on livestock production, it is generally accep

Criteria that are required to confirm heartwater in ruminants and mice are discussed. In ruminants it entails the macroscopical and microscopical lesions as well as the identification of Cowdria ruminantium in brain smears or histological sections. Macroscopical lesions in the majority of animals that die of the disease include effusion of body cavities, hydropericardium, oedema of the lungs, brain, mediastinum, and its associated lymph nodes, and splenomegaly. The effect of specific chemotherapy on the morphology of heartwater organisms in vivo is outlined. A severe nephrosis in heartwater-in

Heartwater is a tick-transmitted rickettsial infection of ruminants, caused by Cowdria ruminantium. The tetracyclines are the only compounds available for therapy of the disease. A screen, using mice infected with C. ruminantium, was developed and used to identify new compounds with potential for the control of heartwater. A series of di-4-methyl-thiosemicarbazones was shown to be highly active in the mouse model and their efficacy was confirmed in further trials in sheep infected with C. ruminantium. The mouse screen was shown to be simple to operate and reliably predictive of activity agains

Heartwater, a tick-borne disease caused by Ehrlichia ruminantium, is considered to be a significant cause of mortality amongst domestic and wild ruminants in South Africa. The main vector is Amblyomma hebraeum and although previous epidemiological studies have outlined endemic areas based on mortalities, these have been limited by diagnostic methods which relied mainly on positive brain smears. The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFA) has a low specificity for heartwater organisms as it cross-reacts with some other species. Since the advent of biotechnology and genomics, molecular epidemio

Diuretics, in particular furosemide, are generally recommended as a supportive treatment in the advanced stages of heartwater in ruminants. However, after what appeared to be possible adverse effects accompanying its use in field cases of heartwater, the effects of this drug on certain blood and urine parameters were investigated in normal sheep at the same dose rates. Diuresis with concomitant natriuresis was significant after furosemide administration, as was the expected plasma volume decrease. Other significant changes included metabolic alkalosis, hypokalaemia and reduced blood ionised ca

Heartwater (cowdriosis) is an important, often fatal, tick-borne disease of domestic and wild ruminants in sub-Saharan Africa and some Indian Ocean and Caribbean islands. The causal agent, Cowdria ruminantium (Cowdry 1925), is a rickettsia closely related to members of the genus Ehrlichia, and is probably a part of a complex of genomic species. Imported breeds of sheep and goats (especially Angoras) are highly susceptible, but indigenous populations of endemic areas may be resistant to infection. Very young stock (less than 9 d old) possess a natural resistance that is unrelated to the immune

A study was carried out on the spatial and temporal distribution of Amblyomma variegatum and other ticks infesting sheep and goats in northern Cameroon. A serological survey of heartwater (cowdriosis) using a competitive ELISA was concurrently carried out in the same flocks. A. variegatum was found to be the most predominant species accounting for 48.3% of all the ticks collected. Other species identified included Rhipicephalus sulcatus, R. lunulatus, R. turanicus, Boophilus decoloratus, B. annulatus, Hyalomma nitidum and H. truncatum. Tick control was found to be necessary between June and De

We previously reported a rickettsial heartwater-like disease in vipers from Ghana that resembled heartwater in its gross lesions, was apparently transmitted by ticks (Aponomma and Amblyomma), and responded clinically favorably to early treatment with tetracycline. Cell culture showed consistent cytopathic effects in bovine endothelial cells, viper cells, and mouse cells, and inhibition of cytopathic effect by tetracycline in vitro. A type D retrovirus was observed in vacuoles in all infected cells. The virus and rickettsia infection was associated with transfer of cytopathic effect, regardless

The occurrence of endemic stability for heartwater (Cowdria ruminantium infection) is a controversial issue, because the means by which young cattle and other neonatal ruminants become infected and acquire immunity to the disease have never been adequately explained. We conducted a study in a heartwater-endemic area in southeastern Zimbabwe to investigate the relationships between calf immunity to C. ruminatium, infestations of the tick vector Amblyomma hebraeum and dam, colostral and calf antibody titres to C. ruminantium. Two groups of cows (tick-infested and acaricide-treated) were artifici

Tick-borne diseases (TBD) occur in many temperate countries and are economically important in most tropical and subtropical areas, affecting dairy and beef cattle, as well as small ruminants. Four major tick-borne diseases have been detected in eastern and southern Africa: East Coast fever (ECF) caused by Theileria parva, Theiler 1904, anaplasmosis caused by either Anaplasma marginale, Theiler 1910, Anaplasma centrale, Theiler 1911, or Anaplasma ovis, Bevan 1912, babesiosis caused by Babesia bovis, Babes 1988 and Babesia bigemina, Smith & Kilborne 1893, and heartwater caused by Ehrlichia rumin

This paper reviews the available literature on the clinical pathology and pathophysiology of heartwater and makes comparisons with unpublished results obtained from a recent study in experimentally-induced heartwater in calves. The pathophysiological changes seem to center on an increased capillary permeability the result of which is reflected most noticeably in cardiac and lung function. There is a marked drop in cardiac output in severe cases and some workers have recorded a severe drop in diastolic blood pressure in the advanced stage of the disease. Changes in lung function are variable, d

Thirty young crossbred steers were purchased from a tick-borne disease-free farm in South Africa, shown to be serologically negative to Babesia bigemina/bovis and Cowdria ruminantium, and moved to an experimental farm where babesiosis and heartwater were known to be endemic. The animals were allowed to graze as a herd on tick-infested areas of the farm for 90 days from the beginning of April but were separated into three groups of 10 for treatment. One group received a prophylactic regime of two injections of 20 mg/kg of a long-acting oxytetracycline on days 7 and 14 after introduction, one re

A critical evaluation is made of reports in the literature on the block method of vaccination and the relevant factors that play a role in the immunization against heartwater are also discussed. The most important of these is the fact that in heartwater immunogenicity parallels pathogenicity. It is shown that the more severe the reaction of the host to the immunizing infection, the stronger its immunity to subsequent challenge. The importance of this principle in the block method is emphasized. Other factors that play a role are the average incubation periods recorded in the different domestic

A Gram-negative, intracellular, coccus-like microorganism was found in cases of heartwater in the three species which are susceptible to the disease; namely, goats, sheep, and cattle. It was absent in the case of control animals, both normal ones and those dying of some. other diseases. The presence of this microorganism was definitely related to the febrile reaction. It was most easily detected in the renal glomeruli and in the small capillaries of the cerebral cortex but probably occurred throughout the body. The microorganism was a typical endothelial parasite, being restricted in distribut

Babesia bovis and Cowdria ruminantium were identified for the first time in cattle on Unguja Island, Zanzibar. B bovis is common and widespread, although clinical disease had not been diagnosed previously. The vector of heartwater, Amblyomma variegatum, is found throughout Unguja but C ruminantium appears to be more localised in distribution than B bovis.

Current cattle tick control practices and producer attitudes towards tick control in the eastern Cape Province of South Africa are discussed. These were ascertained from answers to a questionnaire survey to which 31.2% of farmers responded. In general, producers favoured intensive tick control. Beef and dairy farmers had a definite preference for synthetic pyrethroid acaricides, the majority followed a 25 times p.a. treatment frequency and most changed acaricides because of price. Beef producers favoured pour-on application of acaricides while the majority of dairy producers utilized plunge di
