The neurotoxicity of Chlorantraniliprole to Helicoverpa armigera larvae.

Chlorantraniliprole (CAP) is a mainstream diamide insecticide widely used against lepidopteran pests such as Helicoverpa armigera. Given that most insecticides act via neurotoxic mechanisms, we reasoned that CAP, despite its well-established action on ryanodine receptors (RyRs), may also disrupt nervous system function through additional targets. Insect neurotoxicity is a coordinated process involving neurons and glial cells: voltage-gated sodium (Nav) and potassium (Kv) channels are common insecticide targets, however, their involvement in CAP-induced neurotoxicity has not been established, a

Carbon dioxide drives oviposition in Helicoverpa armigera.

The levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), a powerful greenhouse gas, have risen dramatically over the past century, leading to widespread ecological effects on plants and animals alike, including insects that serve vital roles in many food webs. Elevated atmospheric CO2 is anticipated to affect insect biodiversity by influencing essential behaviors, although the mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that female Helicoverpa armigera use plant-emitted CO2 as a primary cue for egg-laying, showing a preference for younger leaves with higher CO2 gradients to enhance offspring survival

Hypoxia-induced immortalization of Helicoverpa armigera pupal ovarian cells.

Establishing continuous cell lines from lepidopteran insects is notoriously inefficient, with success rates typically below 5% and often below 1%, severely limiting research and biopesticide development for pests such as Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). We present a simple, reproducible method, hypoxia-induced immortalization that dramatically improves this efficiency. By applying a brief hypoxic stimulus (5% O2, 7 days) during primary culture of pupal ovary cells, we achieved an overall success rate of 17.8% across four independent batches, more than 3-fold higher than conventio

Potential of adjuvants and an entomopathogenic fungus for the management of Helicoverpa armigera.

Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a polyphagous species that feeds on crops of high economic importance in Brazil. Biological control, a component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), employs parasitoids, predators, and entomopathogenic fungi to control agricultural pests as a strategy to reduce insecticide use and promote more sustainable practices. Adjuvants and activators, including vegetable oils, mineral oils, and fusel oil, can enhance the efficacy and toxicity of bioinsecticides. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different adjuvants

New insights on the effects of spinosad on the development of Helicoverpa armigera.

Helicoverpa armigera (cotton bollworm) is one of the most destructive pests worldwide. Due to resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis and conventional insecticides, an effective management strategy to control this pest is urgently needed. Spinosad, a natural pesticide, is considered an alternative; however, the mechanism underlying the developmental effects of sublethal spinosad exposure remains elusive. In this study, the mechanism was examined using an insect model of H. armigera. Results confirmed that exposure to sublethal spinosad led to reduced larval wet weight, delayed larval developmenta

Adaptive Introgression across Semipermeable Species Boundaries between Local Helicoverpa zea and Invasive Helicoverpa armigera Moths.

Hybridization between invasive and native species has raised global concern, given the dramatic increase in species range shifts and pest outbreaks due to anthropogenic dispersal. Nevertheless, secondary contact between sister lineages of local and invasive species provides a natural laboratory to understand the factors that determine introgression and the maintenance or loss of species barriers. Here, we characterize the early evolutionary outcomes following secondary contact between invasive Helicoverpa armigera and native H. zea in Brazil. We carried out whole-genome resequencing of Helicov

HarmGR13 mediates myo-inositol taste perception in Helicoverpa armigera larvae.

Myo-inositol, a sugar alcohol produced by most plants, serves as a nutrient and feeding stimulant for many phytophagous insects. Inositol-sensitive taste sensilla have been characterized in many Lepidoptera larvae, but their molecular bases remain unclear. In this study, we determined the gustatory receptors (GRs) for myo-inositol in larva of Helicoverpa armigera, a worldwide crop pest. First, electrophysiological analyses revealed that medial sensilla styloconica strongly responded to myo-inositol and ribose, with weaker responses to xylose, and one GRN inside sensillum may mediate the respon

Identification and Characterization of the Masculinizing Function of the Helicoverpa armigera Masc Gene.

The Masculinizer (Masc) gene has been known to control sex development and dosage compensation in lepidopterans. However, it remains unclear whether its ortholog exists and plays the same roles in distantly related lepidopterans such as Helicoverpa armigera. To address this question, we cloned Masc from H. armigera (HaMasc), which contains all essential functional domains of BmMasc, albeit with less than 30% amino acid sequence identity with BmMasc. Genomic PCR and qPCR analyses showed that HaMasc is a Z chromosome-linked gene since its genomic content in males (ZZ) was two times greater than

Field screening and evaluation of pigeonpea genotypes against podborer (Helicoverpa armigera).

Hence an experiment was conducted to screen fifteen germplasm lines for their resistance/tolerance to podborer under natural infestation in pesticide-free open field. To asses the degree of infestation 250 green pods were randomly picked up from all the plants of each plot. The pods damaged by gram podborer were detected by the presence large bored holes in pods. Such infested and healthy pods were counted separately. The pod damage (%) was calculated on the basis of number of pods examined and the number of infested pods. Marketable green pod yield of each genotype under natural pest infestat

Identification of a hydrophobic domain of HA2 essential to morphogenesis of Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus.

The HA2 protein of the Helicoverpa armigera single-nucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (HearNPV) is a WASP homology protein capable of nucleating branched actin filaments in the presence of the Arp2/3 complex in vitro. To determine the role of ha2 in the HearNPV life cycle, ha2 knockout and ha2 repair bacmids were constructed. Transfection and infection analysis demonstrated that the ha2 null bacmid was unable to produce infectious budded virus (BV), while the repair bacmid rescued the defect. In vitro analysis demonstrated that the WCA domain of HA2 accelerates Arp2/3-mediated actin assembly an

Corynebacterium sp. 2-TD Mediated Toxicity of 2-Tridecanone to Helicoverpa armigera.

Cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) is a Lepidopteran noctuid pest with a global distribution. It has a wide range of host plants and can harm cotton, tomato, tobacco, and corn, as well as other crops. H. armigera larvae damage the flower buds, flowers, and fruits of tomato and cause serious losses to tomato production. Tomato uses the allelochemical 2-tridecanone to defend against this damage. So far, there have been no reports on whether the adaptation of H. armigera to 2-tridecanone is related to its symbiotic microorganisms. Our study found that Corynebacterium sp. 2-TD, symbiotic bacte

Bollworm responses to release of genetically modified Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedroviruses in cotton.

Helicoverpa armigera single nucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (HaSNPV) has been developed as a commercial biopesticide to control the cotton bollworm, H. armigera, in China. The major limitation to a broader application of this virus has been the relative long time to incapacitate the target insect. Two HaSNPV recombinants with improved insecticidal properties were released in bollworm-infested cotton. One recombinant (HaCXW1) lacked the ecdysteroid UDP-glucosyltransferase (egt) gene and in another recombinant (HaCXW2), an insect-selective scorpion toxin (AaIT) gene replaced the egt gene. In a

Eco-friendly control of Helicoverpa armigera using synergistic mixtures of thymol and eucalyptol.

The cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), is a widely distributed, highly polyphagous lepidopteran pest that poses a major threat to agricultural productivity across various cropping systems. Successful management of this pest relies on continuous scientific investigation and targeted management strategies within Integrated Pest Management programs. This study investigated the insecticidal efficacy of pure thymol and 1,8-cineole (also known as Eucalyptol), both separately and in binary combination, against 3rd instar larvae of H. armigera. The bioassay findings revealed that thymol e

Nutritional performance of the tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera, on different tomato cultivars.

The development and cultivation of tomato cultivars that are resistant to the tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), are very limited in Iran and other parts of the world because of the lack of information about resistant tomato cultivars to minimize the use of insecticides. Therefore, the present study was carried out to identify alternative methods to chemical control. Nutritional performance of the larval stages (fourth, fifth, and sixth instars) of H. armigera on fruit of eight tomato cultivars, including SUN 6108 f1, Rio grande UG, Korral, Super strain

Natural oils based nanoform of chlorantraniliprole for sustainable management of Helicoverpa armigera in tomato.

Chlorantraniliprole is an anthranilic diamide insecticide that has both contact and systemic action and is commonly used to manage lepidopteran pests. However, its natural hydrophobicity and poor solubility limit the creation of effective and eco-friendly formulations. In the current study, high energy ultra-sonication power was used to create natural oil-based and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) based nanoemulsions, which were then compared to commercial suspension concentrate (SC) formulation of chlorantraniliprole. The natural oil-based nanoemulsion had a particle size of 98 nm and indicated high

Disruption of paramyosin compromises muscle integrity and alters systemic trehalose metabolism in Helicoverpa armigera.

Trehalose is a principal circulating sugar in insects, maintaining a critical balance between energy supply and storage through systemic insulin signalling. Among different tissues, insect muscle functions as a metabolic hub, coordinating trehalose utilization and glucose uptake to sustain energy homeostasis. In Helicoverpa armigera, we examined whether paramyosin (key muscle gene) silencing influence carbohydrate metabolism. HaPrm silencing led to muscle defects and delayed pupation, indicating a crucial role of HaPrm in development. Transcriptomics revealed dysregulation of genes involved in

Beyond molting disruption: Tebufenozide modifies gut immunity and antiviral responses in Helicoverpa armigera (Noctuidae).

The insect growth regulator tebufenozide, an ecdysone agonist, is widely used to control Helicoverpa armigera through disrupting molting and development. However, its other effects on the insect physiology remain poorly understood. This study investigates how tebufenozide modulates gut immunity, microbial homeostasis, and antiviral defense mechanisms in H. armigera larvae. Using RT-qPCR, we analyzed the expression of key immune genes following exposure to lethal (LC₅₀) and sublethal (LC₁₀, LC₂₅) concentrations of tebufenozide. Our results demonstrate that tebufenozide induced the IMD pathway t

Partner of bursicon Regulates Pheromone Gland Development and Sex Pheromone Biosynthesis in Helicoverpa armigera.

Bursicon, a heterodimeric neuropeptide composed of Burs-α and its binding subunit Partner of bursicon (Pburs), is primarily known to regulate insect cuticle tanning and also participates in wing expansion, reproduction and immunity. Pburs is highly expressed during pheromone gland (PG) maturation in female Helicoverpa armigera, a major agricultural pest, indicating its potential role in PG development and function. In this study, we cloned the full-length coding sequence of HaPburs and verified its high conservation across insects. qPCR revealed PG transcripts peaking at 48 h post-emergence in

Alcohol dehydrogenase 5 of Helicoverpa armigera interacts with the CYP6B6 promoter in response to 2-tridecanone.

Alcohol dehydrogenase 5 (ADH5) is a member of medium-chain dehydrogenase/reductase family and takes part in cellular formaldehyde and S-nitrosoglutathione metabolic network. 2-tridecanone (2-TD) is a toxic compound in many Solanaceae crops to defend against a variety of herbivory insects. In the broader context of insect development and pest control strategies, this study investigates how a new ADH5 from Helicoverpa armigera (HaADH5) regulates the expression of CYP6B6, a gene involved in molting and metamorphosis, in response to 2-TD treatment. Cloning of the HaADH5 complementary DNA sequence
